  1. I bought one from a dealer who had taken it in part exchange. A great machine, I paid £1250 and thought I got a bargain. John
  2. Looks like a job for a Lucas mill. John
  3. I have 2inch 18month air dried beech. I am in Essex
  4. I have both. Where abouts are you? John
  5. Have you found anyone to mill this tree? I may be interested. Have you any photos of it? John
  6. If it was nice and straight with no branches I would pay £4.00 per hoppus foot. That is what it is worth to me, others may pay more if they have a better market for it.
  7. I milled a turkey oak last summer, I don't know why it has such a bad reputation. As long as one accepts it is not durable then I don't see a problem. I have used some in a small turning job and have planed a few bits up. Most of it sits in a shed air drying slowly. So anyone with any butts suitable for milling please get in touch. John
  8. When under load the two saws slow and do an equal amount of work. The cost of the big power units makes it an expensive mill.
  9. My chain mill uses two old husqvarna 2101xp power units. It works well.
  10. We try and stay out of the woods when it is wet, but then our woods are in Wales , so it is always wet!
  11. I have a Fransguard which seems good to me compared to the old Hesford I was using before. I got mine in Cheffins plant auction. What part of the country are you in? I am also clearing spruce in a small scale way. Are you managing to sell yours?what's it going for? John
  12. Once felled I would offer between £2 and £4 per hoppus foot. Could they be milled on site? I have a Lucas mill so would set up around the butts. any photos? Sizes? John
  13. Thanks guys. I am looking at getting a used one of ebay. I have done well in the past, I look for one that has spent it's life in a shed in stockbroker Surrey as opposed to somewhere like Kielder. Always a bit of a gamble but if one uses common sense it reduces the risk. John
  14. I know Husqvarna saws with an xp after their number are from their professional range. Could someone explain the Stihl numbering system, are all Stihl saws the same build quality or do the have a professional range. Are the better quality saws made with white handles as opposed to orange or black? Thanks John
  15. It is worth milling if you can use the timber yourself, however ash will be alot harder to sell than oak especially if it is cut thick. What part of the country are you in? John
  16. This is my little Ford 2120. Some larch is ready to be milled on the Woodmizer. The shed remains unfinished for another year:001_rolleyes:
  17. Hi Ashman I am based in Essex so not too far from Bedfordshire. If you get anything decent for milling I would be interested? Thanks John
  18. A bit too far from me, but if you can't find anyone else I would travel to save them from being ringed up for logs. I would need to be able to mill them on site . John
  19. Cut and split with a Palax , but £15 not nearly enough to interest me. John
  20. I have some processed spruce in a shed in our woods near Llandovery, probably 20 plus cubic meters. Nice and dry. I have not been down there for some time but hope to visit in the next 2 weeks. I would have to get it out to my neighbours farmyard , he could then load a lorry. If you were interested how much would you offer? John
  21. TW That looks like some great old kit. I bet there is no daydreaming when you are using it.
  22. This looks a pretty good system, anyone using it? [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12aZxiBucWU]YouTube - PackFix[/ame]
  23. I remove a wheel , take off the tow hitch and hope it will still be there on my next visit.
  24. I don't insure mine. However it is in woodland in Mid wales and would take a lot of effort to get it out.
  25. Nearly all the hardwood trees I get to mill are either garden trees or hedge row trees and that means the chances are there is going to be metal in them. I scan them with the metal detector but in many ways I would rather not know and just deal with the metal when I hit it. So do you bother with a detector and how do you then approach finding the metal? Chainsaw, hammer and chisel? If it is just a small nail then the tips on my Lucas mill blades will survive but hit a cut nail and they will be ruined. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to replace the blade, and 30 minutes to retip it. Tips cost about £10 per set of 5. Woodmizer blades are about £13 each and will be resharpenable if the metal is small, otherwise will be ruined. Do you just hope for the best or do you try and locate and cut out any metal? John
