  1. I also like butts, when you get to my age you can't be so fussy, so any butts suitable for milling interest me.:001_tt2: I am in Essex so far enough away from Cracker so not to be in competition. Thanks John
  2. We have always bought our pc's from Aldi. Great value and a good helpline.
  3. Yes, the handrail is curved. Here is how I did it. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3lCAN6fBwA]YouTube - curved work[/ame] My fingers were not as close to the cutters as they look or I hope they weren't.:001_unsure:
  4. I had an interesting job recently to make a Giverny style bridge. I used some larch milled on our Woodmizer and air dried for a year. We had 100mm steel channel rolled to form the curve and then bolted the larch handrail to it. To get it into position we fixed 4 wheel barrow wheels and rolled it over the stream on 2 youngman boards. Definetly one of my more interesting jobs
  5. Is this "milling oak " already milled?
  6. 36 cu ft per ton, so yes sounds good.
  7. I believe the big mills pay about £4 per hoppus foot delivered but I may be out of date. I try to pay a bit less to allow for getting to site and setting up. Once milled then £25 upwards, kiln dried joinery quality £50 to 70
  8. Is it being milled on site or being transported to a mill? Looks really nice timber, how much are you getting per cubic foot for it?
  9. Yes good logs are hard to get hold of. I went to see a farmer last week who had felled a 4foot diam oak on his farmyard because he thought it was hollow. It turned out to be 100% solid. It was only 8foot long and pretty ugly, probably been down a few years. He wanted £200 for it which was more than I was willing to pay. If it had been top quality I may have paid up . We had the old arguement of it being worth more for firewood. I suspect it will stay on his yard untill it rots. Shame.
  10. I thought about £100 for a new rod/seals in the ram and £150 for a new diverter valve to power it as my tractor only has one spool valve..
  11. No, if you were local and had some decent logs I was going to offer to mill them for you.
  12. I havn't really got organised yet , at the moment I clamp the controls where the rear window was and then kneel on the tractor seat. I notice on Youtube that some have a seat mounted above the trailer draw bar, but that would mean getting out of the cab every time . I think I have had about 3 ton on it but it was less than half full.
  13. Yes I can see it is going to take some time to get good with the crane, at the moment my pile of logs looks like they fell out of the sky.:001_rolleyes:
  14. Mine is a Farma trailer, it work surprisingly well with my little Ford 2120 45hp tractor.
  15. I have a Fransguard and have had no problems, it pulls really well.
  16. Yes, I think I will fix it , if only to see how effective it is. The trailer is a 9 ton but I only had it about a third full as I was pulling it up quite a steep slope and I only have a small tractor.
  17. Yes I am in a wood with plenty of spruce stumps.
  18. I had a play with my new to me trailer last week. I moved more logs in a morning than I would have in a week without it. It has a steering drawbar, but the previous owner never used it and the ram is well rusted. It is going to cost me £250 to £300 to get the ram sorted and an extra spool valve in my tractor. So does a steering drawbar make a big difference to the manoeuvrability of the trailer?
  19. Have you seen this? Seasoned Oak on eBay (end time 11-Apr-10 13:30:41 BST)
  20. Was the one you missed advertised on Ecolots? If it was, it is now in my barn. Great machine. Where abouts are you? John
  21. " Buy land, theyr'e not making it anymore" I don't think most people who buy woodland expect a return on their money until they come to sell. Most buy to have a bolt hole in the countryside.
  22. I would have been interested but you are just too far away. We don't see much elm in Essex any more. John
  23. How about this Ford Thames? GENUINE ORIGINAL BARN FIND - FORD THAMES 1960 on eBay (end time 21-Feb-10 20:14:29 GMT)
  24. I am a joiner / cabinet maker, I try to work out how long a job will take , then multiply that by 2 . Normally works out about right, things always take longer in the workshop / fitting than I think.
  25. I am not familiar with Blue Cedar, but have milled a couple of large Cedar of Lebanon over the years. I love this timber, smells great,is clear and stable. It makes great trim. However I think you will find it is not worth a great deal. John
