    I planted a coast redwood and 3 hollies this week. All in 70l pots and around 3m. The plants werent to heavy for 2 guys but perhaps a sck trolley would help in the feild. I allowed 1.5 man days (long half day for 2 of 1/2 day for 3 guys). It only took about 2.5 hours in the end. I charge my normal hourly rate for planting and collecting if necesssary, plus i add 10% to all trees and materials. If the client want a gaurantee I would add an appropiate % to the cost of the whole job based on what the kind of failure rate you may expect. If he wanted a clown to plant them he would have gone to the circus not a tree surgeon.

    No it doesnt. They as paye get 28 days holliday these days. Hourly rate means nothing to me. I could manilpulate hourly rate depending on whether on not you pay for breaks but still give them the same per day. Paye should be considered on salary, training budget, type of work and perks imo.

    From what I gather the average wage for a paye climber is 16-20k. Am I wrong?

    I have different rates for Commercial and Domestic work. Commercial is aound £25 per man day less because most of my commercial is Estate, LA and National trust and this is carried out on a trust/dayrate basis. This means no quoting involved but I do charge for any site visits or time taken to arrange these works though. This type of work is 30-50% of our turnover and I feel it is fair to reduce costs involved for these clients due to the ammount of work they put ourway and the time I save by not quoting.

    I seem to remember from my very brief wpd work (4 weeks). That there policy is get in the van and stay there until 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder. Happy days!

    Most customers send me the photos, not the otherway round. I recon if you do a good job you will be reccomended, I don't think a cd would make any difference to that. Image the extra time involved making a cd for evey job. Sorry Bob, but for me I can't see it working

    Sorry not in Hampshire but I had a similar issue earlier this year. Are you taking lorry loads? If so talk to your local haulier they may be able to line up a buyer if you cant. Even if it goes for pulp it may cover haulage costs.

    Tax isn't a big deal. I put away about 20% of all the money invoiced out after paroll has been done each month. The bill is always less than I have allowed. Cashflow can be a big deal though. I'm always owed between £3000 and £15000 depending on the time of year. This March was a record with £22000 in outstading invoices.

    I now use the AA generic and site specific RA, and we do use them for most jobs. Before I used these I just had a breif section added to the quote form which I have added below. May be of use to someone. old quote template.doc

    Thanks for that. We use the rigging blocks often to do just that. I can see the benefit of having a small light weight set up to hand though.
