  1. The way my better half interpreted the regs was that if the trees were being felled to allow for development then yes its cis. If its felling dead trees/tidying up messy ones outside of the footprint/rpa then it the work is amenity work and not cis, even if the building is still in progress. Either way if you work for builders, even just now and again a cis card is woth getting and just load the quote to allow for it if you feel you need to.

  3. I guess an important role of a method statement is so that arboricultural works can be planned around other site works. Especially with development, a foreman should be able to work out where contractors will be working and for how long, hopefully avoiding problems with other trades. For complex operations method statement can clarify excacty how works will proceed and who will undertake what role. Crane work springs to mind, especially if you have a crane operator who may or may not have experience with tree work A breif method statement for domestic works can help clarify in a clients mind how excatly a large or tricky job is going to be done. I know from experience with very tricky jobs a method statement can add the extra degree of reassurance to your quote.

  13. The difference is the guidance these guys get. I pay newest trainee minimum wage paye. But in less than 12months he has, chipper, first aid, cs 30, 31, 38 and is working towards 39. When he climbs it cost me as he is slow. My other guy gets a truck loads of training and paid overseas trips from time to time. He is also paye and gets alot less than £120 a day. A new guys needs guidance years of experience and to get the top bucks.
  14. I honestly mean no offence to you here but do you climb? I ask this as by your posts I get the impression you do contract forestry work with some private tree surgery. If I'm wrong please ingore the rest. If your not a climber do you provide arial rescue for a subby climber you get in? If you don't climb what kind of experience and guidance would a new climber with less than a years experince get with you? Learning from an experienced climber is by far the most important thing for a new guy imo, and make all the difference long term. I am not based too far from you and a few years back I was freelance climbing for many outfits. I know quite a few of the guys still FL climbing and I know what the standard is and what the going rate is. I think you will find that the going rate down here for a pretty compatant climber is around £110-£120 per day depending on the volume of work you give them. More if they are top notch or providing a vehicle or more kit.
  15. Are you an extra guy for an established crew? If so I'd say around £60 a day as you will be getting decent experience. If you are working for a landscaping type firm who don't have their own climber I would steer clear altogether. Probably want you to work beyond yor experience level with little or no guidance. I have always thought working for the right firm whilst your learning is more important than what money you get. If you are trained well the good money will come in time.

  17. I'm not fussed about stopping for birds, we also do it all the time. Its the additional costs and time to work around bats. I'm sure roofers have the same trouble and I am sure they would ammend their original price if they discovered bats, so why shouldn't we?
  18. Ok Boffins. Why don't we see hundreds of Apple trees growing on roadside verges? I often chomp an apple on my travels and throw the core out the window. I recon this has been going on for thousands of years and millions of apple seeds have ended up on banks and verges. Why aren't our country roads lined with apple trees?

  20. I thought these species loose more functional xylem when heavily reduced? I would consider these 3 species to be poor compartmentaliser of decay. Any any heavy reduction I would expect to see a greater loss in functional xylem. I was wandering whether it has anything to due with these species being difuse porus. Do difuse porus trees generally have a higher water demand? As you get closer to the tropics tree species tend to become more diffuse porus . Many tropical trees and Eucalyptus have stoma on the upper surface and just like Poplars tend to dip their leaves away from the sun at mid day to reduce photosythethis and transipiration because they are unable to close stoma. I have an idea that by having more stomata which do not close, transipiration will continue to some degree all day which may help prevent water columns from breaking and becoming filled with air if stomata were to close at mid day. This would be especially important for tall trees where the stress on the water column is greatest. Also you mentioned that some species might be trying to modify their soil environment. If these species are known to thrive in wet soil, modifying the environment would improve conditions for other species and increase competition. I could be barking up the wrong tree but these were my thoughts.
  21. I guess its possible that it could put some off. What I was thinking was that if you give a price to dismantle and remove a tree but find a colony of bats in the process. If there was no evidence that protected species were present before we started why should we as contractors have to foot the bill for bringing in other proffesional to deal with a protected species on someones elses property? You can't just walk away halfway through a job so it should be clear what you should you be in that position.
  22. I want to add to my terms and conditions for my quotes to include provisions for protected species. We do a habitat assesment for each job which is included on the quote. Want I want is to state that it would be the clients resposibility to cover any additional man hours and any costs associated with calling in an expert ecologist if protected species are discovered unexpectedly during works. Is this enforceable? Does anyone else have this and how would I word it correctly?
  23. You right about the room in the cabstar. If theres 3 of you in there your going to get to know each other.
  24. I have had both. This is my take without going into legal carrying weights. The cabstar is narrower by 6 inches not counting the wing mirrors. I was replacing front shock anually and leaf springs every other year. When loaded up it felt over loaded. Good on fuel, low geared. Cab star seemed like an uprated version of a panel vans with a tipper on. The Canter is really a larger lorry downrated to 3.5t. It hold a good weight much better. Infact doesn't feel much different to drive empty or full. The extra width hasn't bothered me that much and is easier than the transit to back a chipper up a tight drive. It is however very bad on fuel. Don't expect more than 15mpg which is roughly half of the cabstar. I have never been pulled by vosa in 10 years and have driven both 7.5t and 3.5t. Imo most people are over loaded a lot of the time. I know we over loaded the 7.5t leyland when full. Everyone knows a cabstar with highsides and a full load of chip is overloaded. At a glance a canter could be a 3.5t or a 5.5 and most wouldn't know. I hope I would be less likely to be pulled by in the canter as it looks the part. I think you could also uprated a 3.5t canter if you wanted to go down that route. On the whole I would get a canter again over a cabstar handsdown but only to work it as a second or third vehicle. I wouldn't dream of spending a day quoting in it or have it if I was driving to someone elses yard to sub a few days a week.
