    Portaledge

dont have a clue where to get one mate, but i did find this for you. How to Shag on a Portaledge | eHow.com
  2. Yea mate, cut lengthways as much as poss. I tend to try and chip the whole lot aswell (pain to get rid of). Hi-ab makes life easy, tie into the hook then start from the top and work your way round and down getting rid of the fronds. It saves them falling down on top of you, still have to watch out for the spikes. You still have to cut across to lift out the big trunk, but only a couple of cuts rather than a whole heap of rings. Once its on the ground its not to bad to cut lengthwys and feed into the chipper, have to cross cut some of the lengths, but once all the tension is out of them its not to bad. Still heavy as s**t good to have a few guys. Also to prune them, throwline right over the top then send a rope up with a pulley on it and your climbing system in the pulley. Tie the rope off to the bottom of the palm or another tree. It gives you a bit of an anchor point. Still need spikes and lanyard to get really close to shave those bowls niceley though. Hope that helps.
  3. yea the'yre goodmate. I chew 2 every night.
  4. Pretty cool vids. Is that a Weta in the first one? I thought they only lived in NZ.
  5. Chur bro. Saw some pics on there. Could'nt really see how the setup worked, looked like a bit of fun though. Have'nt actually seen those bungees mate, but fiddle block sounds good for gettin it all tight. Did you back it up with anything? Was it just tied straight to the top tree? Hows the weather up there? I've heard its a bit wet
  6. Anyone know how to setup a good flying fox? I want to be able to take my kids to the park and set one up. I thought about going through a grigri at the base of the tree (so i can raise it up or down) and up through a pulley and then across to the other tree. Not sure how to attatch it at the other end (just a knot?) and how to back it all up. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Also not sure how i stop them from slamming into the other tree.
  7. My daughter gets free ballet and piano lessons in return for tree work. And i've had her scholl donations waived in return for a bit of pruning. That whole tax thing has worried me a bit now. I guess its all about how you word it.
  8. they did look cool we were calling them "the bonsai". They were part of a hedge that runs to the right. I think my expert photography made them look nicer than they actually were. The stuff overhanging the neighbours had been trimmed back hard so was all dead along back fenceline.
  9. Thanks guys. Was the first time i've actually hired a hi-ab in, but all went to plan. Even managed to make a couple of $ Went back and split all the leftover wood for him aswell.
  10. Nice idea mate. I was thinking of setting up something similar for fundraising at my daughters school. A belayed speed climb up a small tree and the winner at the end of the day gets a prize. Or have different prizes at different heights with the better prizes higher up. It was the insurance thing that has put me off aswell mate. Maybe get people to sign a disclaimer?
  11. Just finished this job. Took 3 days in all for 2 guys. Dirty old trees, had about 20 years worth of old trimmings resting on top. All went well though and client was very happy.
  12. I hear ya mate. Best not to get carried away and open the tree up for more decay. Will leave it and see what happens. Thanks for the advice.
  13. Thanks guys. Im hoping that it will heal a bit with the next growing season, so will just leave it for now i think. If it carries on i will remove the whole limb. A bit worried that by removing the whole limb it will just bleed from there instead. I pruned it when it was dormant and i think it may not have benn a very good time of year to prune it . Will wait until its in leaf to prune again i think. Its dripping on the guys driveway is the other problem.
  14. Took a branch off of an elm over a year ago. At the time i noticed that it was bleeding a bit, but thought it would stop once it came into full leaf. I pruned the rest of the tree aswell, but only this one wound bled. It is now a year later and it is still bleeding. I'm pretty sure its just water that is coming out, doesnt look sappy. Will this stop or do i need to remove the entire branch back to the main stem. The tree has just lost its leaves.
  15. I would'nt bother mate. They might learn a lesson if someone gets hurt. Happens to me all the time. Just another example of why the industry needs regulating. Frustrating.
  16. was'nt too sure what was going on mate. But i love that people are still coming out with new ways to use gear. I like the look of some of these SRT to dbrt ideas. That one you mentioned in another thread with the alpine butterfly at the crotch seems a bit more straightforward. Personally dont have enough bling to be trying this stuff out. But will get there one day.
  17. Thanks guys. Looks like I'll be binning them. Thats what you get for chipping other peoples crap I guess. In future if i didnt stack it I'm not gonna chip it.
  18. Working on an empty site today house has been moved foundations have all been ripped up. Chipping the last of the few trees on site and managed to put a bit of steel reinforcing through the chipper. Knives are looking poked. I was hoping i could use one edge, but am worried about cracks. Cant see any, but you never know. Anyone else done anything similar? Did you keep the knives or chuck them?
  19. I've heard its ok if you can stop it splitting. Really hard to sand.
  20. 460 all the way mate. Cant beat the power/weight ratio
  21. I love it! the poor mans pantin. does need a bit of rope beloe to get it to run though.
  22. RS it is what you make of it. Probably wont be getting much lounging in the sun, but you will get some awesome shots for the photo album. I think it would be one of the most beautiful places I've seen in the winter. Good to hear you might be back for the end of the season Ad. You know i'm always keen. Drew would be good to get a visit down this way at some point this winter from you and Mr Smith.
  23. plenty to do in winter mate, all of the above plus skiing and boarding. Ice climbing at fox glacier and franz joseph. Beautiful clear winters skies on the south island. Does get cold though. Up north you'll pretty much find a lot of rain. Pretty sure most tourist attractions stay open, will just be quieter. Winter is my favourite time over here. Wrap up warm.
  24. Awesome thread, went to school next door to hampstead heath so knew alot of the landmarks in the first pics. Funny how you dont appreciate the trees when your that young. What is happeneing on the last few pics with the logs tied to those trees?
