  1. It has now been proven (jon stokes, tree council) that you can not age a hedge by the number of species in it. As weedee says, old maps and historical records are the most accurate. Your local historical society will probably be more than happy to help.
  2. January has been very slow, but as i sold out before christmas, it is not suprising.
  3. Is that the Ystradgynlais at the top end of the Swansea Valley ?
  4. The FC ave fixed rates, and will be more than happy to tell you what they are. Whether you want to work for these rates is a different matter. The small amount that i have done for the FC has ment that i have had to work longer hours to turn a profit.
  5. Wot no 'REF' ? I have an Aarrow eco burn 7 13kw, and a rayburn regent. I have already used 6 m3 of wood, and will probably use another 3 m3.
  6. If you are after old quality bill hooks, try the luddite. If you are realy lucky he will have one of the sussex weald hooks, rare and expensive, but you will not get better. theluddite.com
  7. That will be a thanklass task stump grinding 50 stumps. Particularly as the ground is likely to be soft/ muddy.
  8. When you are splitting long lenghts of timber (3-4'), you need to hold it with one hand, otherwise it is impossible to use.

    Ms 440

When i did my 30/31 one of the people turned up with a 066 with a 25" bar. He did not have the knack for starting it, but it kept us entertained until the instructer took pity on him, and lent him his.
  10. I have just been given a day pass, so count me in. Anybody want a lift from Pembrokeshire in a stinky landrover, or picking up along the A40.
  11. 15', that not even a ripple by jaws standards !
  12. I won one at the arb show last year, and i cut through the top strap the first time i used it.
  13. I use the same thing for my hand saw. It means that when i am juggling with branches over greenhouses roofs etc. i can drop the saw and use two hands on the branch.
  14. Don't get me started on the 19 year old that is supossed to be training with me one day a week !!!!!!!
  15. I could be tempted, i Know of a couple of interesting sites in Pembrokeshire, but it is probably too far for most people. Senny bridge is only an hour and 1/2 from me.
  16. Best energy saving tip: get somebody else to do it.
  17. Nice looking woods, very flat, where is the mud and brambles ?
  18. I got one that needs a new rim welding on. Shame that you are at the other end of the country, as it is surplus to requirements.
  19. Why bother, if the saw is sharp you don't need them.
  20. The acre coope took 2 1/2 days to do with 2 men. All we used was the brash that would have been burnt, and that normally takes a couple of days to do. The dead hedge does not have to be tightly laid and it does not matter if there are small holes. So long as the gaps are too small for the deer to fit through you are fine.
  21. Todays fun and games. The Monkey Puzzle was pollarded ? two years ago, leaving two live growth points. These has since died. Customer wanted it reducing by half. I managed to get to about 30' before i bottled it, even with the tree guide out it still had an alarming wobble/ lurch. So i felled it instead. The first 15' is solid, so i am going back with the logster chainsaw mill. On one side was a new 20k conservatory, and the other was the owners office, so good potential for a big insurance claim.
