  1. Move to NZ sounds like a good plan, but I got no relations there..don't know any Pommie-mad single, desperate women do you??
  2. Good new for all using waste oil as fuel - since 2007 if you use 2500 litres or less per annum of oil, you pay no Road Duty..I am usually up to speed on this kind of thing but only recently found out myself. So if you can get hold of oil for free, filter well and use a two tank system or blend 50/50 with DERV, laugh all the way to the bank, currently. I use either biodiesel or oil/derv in my Hilux, and it runs great. Fit a VOW heater or similar to get the oil warm before it hits the cylinders. Let me know if you want any more info
  3. Thanks for all responses, Kidmans Garden Machinery (Kent) had to take a look in the end when the chain brake snapped and apparently duff fuel was to blame...
  4. I take it you can be fairly vigorous with a smaller machine without causing any damage to it then, provided the teeth are set right?
  5. An NPTC instructor I spoke to recently said that to correctly set the teeth it was necessary to use a gauge/setting tool? Does that ring any bells..your reply has confirmed that I definitely don't have them set correctly. I'm not quite sure where to go from here as the owners manual isn't really that explicit.
  6. I don't live in a caravan...yet. (with recession that might change) But know some nice people who do. They are not all bad news?
  7. OK, can you suggest where I may be going wrong? I'm new to this, the tips were probably a little dull from a willow stump the previous week, but other than that I realize the machine should make light work of it really.
  8. Is anyone using the Multi Tip stump cutter wheels at the moment. Trying to chew through a wet two foot pine stump with regular finger teeth on a Husky 13hp machine is embarrasingly slow, even with a teeth switch / resharpen. Beginning to regret not getting the Alpine Magnum, that was quick....
  9. Don't know where you are in Kent, but there is a guy just outside Maidstone who does plastic welding, might do a little one off? I can weld plastic but have no equipment. A replacement tank would probably be the sensible option but I can get this blokes number if you want.
  10. Don't suppose you carry any of the old style Stihl Forestwear trousers, either A or C?
  11. Put that on ebay and I'd be surprised if it didn't make £1400? I've recently had to go to Nottingham (I@m in Kent) to pay £2k for an R plater. There isn't many Hilux around for under £3k, and they sell unbelieveably fast. I would pay £850 like a shot, if I hadnt bought one already
  12. Have tried the idle screw thanks, no improvement? Will look at the other suggestions such as exhaust though.
  13. I imagine there will be a few sage smiles and shaking of heads, but this begins with a second hand, clean ish looking 357xp from Ebay, £230... didn't check out thoroughly on receipt and now two months down the line will fire up, but not idle. Carb shot? Megabucks repair? All suggestions welcome. It looks to be about 6 years old
  14. Thanks to all who responded, general concensus then BUY one
  15. About to a buy a Hilux to replace the old 110, interested in pros and cons of say, the Mark 3's. Seem very sturdy, reliable and relatively free of some of the (loveable?) hassles that go with older Landies. If any member knows of major cons that i may have missed feel free to let me know.
  16. I use a Stein jacket on the ground and on my bike and they are very similar to the Altura ones, though a little heavier and better made than some cheap bike jackets.Wind cuts straight through it though? Not much cop if its icy and minus 5
  17. I use a Husky SG13, they are quite capable, and under 30" wide. Don't rule out an Alpine Magnum though, they are super-portable and you can carry one through somebody's house? Tried one recently on demo and it tore through a 30 incher in respectable time.
  18. I've got a Defender 110 for sale in the Arb Classifieds for £2k, though to be honest it is needing more work. They break down occasionally and some body areas dissolve like Alka Seltzer. And anyway I'm the wrong end of the UK for you, I believe..If you've driven older tractors, your coming close to what this feels like:001_tt1:. At least with a Jap, whatever you buy is less likely to be a money pit. If you do go for a Landy (and I do like em), for under £3k be careful. If you can hack snail-like diesel performance, ex MOD non turbo models have been well maintained and can be relative bargains.
  19. A female friend of mine has been a foster parent (emphasis on the solo bit there) for some years and finds it rewarding, though at times challenging to say the least. The stories I've heard of lies, tantrums, violence and general hostility (towards just about everyone) have at times had me close to hysterics but I've got a warped sense of humour. Give it a shot, if you've got boundless patience and are able to keep a smile on your face when others are likely to be screaming.
  20. OK, fair comments all round, though a few people are getting carried away. I should have edited that post to make things clearer..I have one of the Stihl Forestry Class 1 jackets which weighs a fair bit, as you know and is cumbersome. I was hoping that protection could be made to be lighter and thinner than on one of those for example? Not suggesting that you should be draped from head to foot in anything like that, while climbing-to the contrary.
  21. I'm curious about general response to this question. Would more arbs wear a saw protective climbing jacket if a comfortable type of the right kind of weight was available? It seems crazy to me that with the general obsession with safety now that nobody (that I can find) produces a very light weight protective garment for climbing, that could be worn without causing overheating/discomfort. Is stuff like Kevlar too expensive?Surely some protection (all over front, not just upper torso), is better than nothing, on a high risk job. I know Arblite do one, but you'd still get hot in that, in time.Thoughts on that please..
  22. Pretty certain. I recently rang just about every hire company in Medway Yellow Pages, without success as far as saw hire is concerned. I'm a stump man and occasionally need something larger than the 24" bar, and nobody that I spoke to would hire any chainsaw, let alone what I needed? At least two blokes said it was largely the same all over..let me know if that is B.S
  23. All joking aside, I reckon you will find that will happen eventually?Which really is not on, if you want to cut your own firewood or have a smallholding and need a saw that is your business. As things are, you can no longer hire a chainsaw in Kent, there has been too many accidents; thats the first step toward a ban for the general public on buying them, it may take a few years, but elf and safety loonies don't want us using a penknife if they have their way? Maybe a sensible general ruling would be make using ladders with chainsaws illegal. Most of the cowboys can't climb, and that would throw a spanner in the works.
  24. If you order anything from the US., just try and buy from a small scale seller (Ebay is perfect), and ask the bloke up front if he will send as a "gift" on the Customs dec.- that covers you up to about $50, at least is permissable. Customs then leave alone (ha)..and knives of sensible dimensions are ok. Just don't order a 346XP chainsaw from over there and try to claim that it is a gift. It doesn't work
