I buy and sell light commercials on the side, and having owned most pickups that under 3K will buy, if you want a stress free vehicle then these are one type i'd avoid. I'm currently running around in a '97 2WD L200, and that's ace- cheap, reliable and great on diesel but having had a '98 crew cab, the words that come to mind if I'm offered another are no, no, no...however other blokes on here i'm sure have had better experiences. All about luck really, as major engine faults and overheating are common on the variant you are thinking about buying. Frankly a 200000 mile Mk4 Hilux will drive a hell of a lot better than an L200 on half that on the clock, and hold it's money. Save your cash and get one of those

Decent straight stem approx 30" diameter approx available early September, Reigate area. No idea if this has any appeal, but please let us know asap (or it will be ringed), and we can make further arrangements. Actual length of stem can confirm on request

I reckon it is worth remembering that any tree company needs capable and sensible people on the ground as much as they need the aerial blokes, and they are worth paying a sensible rate. Have someone remotely lazy or not very observant on the ground and things will go wrong. "Brash monkeys" is a highly derogatory term for guys who still have to be well versed with saws,chippers, rigging, possibly aerial rescue (though a pointless ticket, IMO), making sure that the public are out of the way...need i go on? Think about that. I freelance on the ground and won't work for anyone who has a cr*p attitude.

I agree. A great 4x4 when the air suspension or fancy electronics are not playing up. For towing anything bigger than a box trailer you need 4.0 upwards as they are so heavy, but christ they are thirsty.

Fair comment-I have just got a second hand Granberg off fleabay for 160 odd delivered, and that's about all I want to pay. The prices are way OTT, i reckon

Advice on suitable milling start-up kit

Ok, replies appreciated. Alec, your knowledge of how to produce beams in naturally higher than mine (as a beginner!), so I have noted that. I will be taking on board as much online info as I can before I start cutting much. Phil -
I occasionally have access to oak and other suitable hardwoods for milling (I'm a groundie, employer does not always need what is felled), and would welcome any advice on what may be the most suitable mill- I for the best part would be looking to quarter saw on site to produce beams, with planking being secondary, and depending on what I am able to access other than oak? Also Has anyone used the little Haddon lumber makers with any success, I have had one demo'ed previously and whilst the cuts were not perfect, it did a respectable job on smaller oak that could then be finished on a bed saw. My budget is reasonable but not top end, what would you suggest is the best start-up saw / mill combo for occasional use, ie, not every day, or even week to begin with.

If i have this assumed right, I can put a thread on general chat on for an item I need to shift, as long as it's free? If that's wrong, no doubt i'll hear from Steve soon enough anyway..this is a 20 foot approx box lorry back in fibreglass, wood and ally (still has Lenleys the furniture shop livery all over it)-it needs to be gone from it's site in Biddenden Kent asap and if anyone locally has a low loader / hiab combo big enough to shift it, and can use it for storage etc, let me know. I work for a few different tree surgeons and so am able to occasionally get a deal going whereby I can get some suitable supply for firewood production, but supplies are running low. I am new to doing some occasional bags of logs to supplement income and need to know the best way of locating suitable local cordwood for processing. I'd like to be able supply more than I actually have stacked under cover this winter, so i'm guessing the only way I can do that is try and obtain a fast seasoner (ash), and hope I have some at suitable low moisture by late winter. Any advice welcomed

...you may not want to return there too quickly if there is too many of the freaky, bloody great hornets about, of the like that I've just seen? How common are these things, i've not seen them in Kent until recently. My other half had one fly in the bedroom the other week, and I don't mind admitting they scare the bejesus out out of me, never mind her. Was lugging some ash out of a small copse in Staplehurst, and one flew by a few yards away- massive, orangey-hued thing. Is this just load of tosh about the Asian variety making it over here- they had a few people in France keel over (anaphalyptic shock) a couple of years back. If its that normal for whatever variety this is to be here, how come I've not seen them previously..
