  1. Now I know! Evil little gentleman in velvet. KABOOM!
  2. That looks more fun than topping conifers! Never been too sure how much harm moles do to pasture, mind.
  3. Tragic. What a waste. The inquest is underway. Are the results public? As already mentioned, knowing exactly what went wrong may save lives in the future.
  4. What does the travel involve Bro?
  5. Fully expected him to die when the Mog went up that mound. There's having a laugh then there's being suicidal. These boys crossed the line, I reckon. Mind you, he could have cut that hedge pretty quickly if he'd had an 88 with him. The pussy.
  6. vt with Hitchclimber is best combo I've ever found. But... all the basic knots / hitches have their place. Have fun playing with them. DON'T be like me, using a Prussick for years, copying an old boy who didn't like change.
  7. Fell. Poison. End. What a crappy life for a tree doing it's best when planted in a totally wrong situation.
  8. Well why don't you f*** off back to NZ then?
  9. Nothing wrong with Caritool. It is a consumable bit of of kit that you should check regularly. £4 never lasts forever. Don't clip on to it instead of a side D, however. That hurts.
  10. Thou shalt not break arm off Greek statue in garden whilst winching stump out then stick arm back on with soil/bar oil.
  11. Don't fell them. Sell the apples next year.
  12. Thou shalt not scowl at other tree gangs as you drive past each other... The guilty know who they are...
  13. That is beautiful work. I have mixed views on reductions generally. I see a lot that are pointless, ugly and a waste of time. It's not often you see one so good that the tree has a much better shape afterwards. Nice one.
  14. Reg, Any idea about timescales? It's not just a big fat groundie in a silver suit is it?
  15. My young groundie turns 18 in Feb and is keen to do CS 30/31, 38, 39 and chipper. He can't afford to pay for standalone courses and I don't have enough work to employ him full time as an apprentice. He doesn't fancy college for 1-2 years but would be keen on a condensed 10 week course or similar. What's the crack with grants / funding? Any ideas and suggestions appreciated. He knows all about the job now, and is mad keen to get going. We are based near Ashford, Kent.
  16. Thanks for so much input fellas. Garth - Not the one in Tenterden (which is a beast), this one is in Littlestone. Smaller, but in a tiny back garden.
  17. Recent thread in picture forum (now closed) brought up the question about "unclimbable trees". Has anyone climbed / dismantled a Monkey Puzzle (Chile Pine)? Never been asked to work on one, but one local to me has outgrown it's emplacement, and the owner (regular log customer) has started dropping hints...
  18. That was quicker than anticipated mate! I'm off to Oz for a month on Jan 29th, so I will have to force a beer down your neck before then!
  19. Stihl v. Husky? BMW v. Merc? Mainly use Stihl, but my old 351XP has been a far better saw than my MS260 (although I may have bought a dog). Used a 338XPT once and seriously considered hurling it from the tree into a nearby skip! Generally most of the pro saws made by the big two are pretty good. Matter of personal choice and proximity of dealer. Husky make much better helmets, though!
  20. Let's hear from anyone with any good news for a change! It can't all be doom and gloom out there, can it? Think positive! Client cancelled today 'cos of weather BUT whilst having a tidy up I found a fiver in some old jeans! HURRAH!
  21. Has this thread been removed 'cos it was getting too depressing?....
  22. 1st coffee went cold while I was on some dodgy arb website.... Weather has brightened right up now! Typical! Might see if the client wants half a day...
  23. Thanks Ed, that's what I meant really. SkyHuck - I do agree with you. Climbing is what sets us apart from the gardeners! But body thrusting up that first 20 feet seems daft when you have a ladder with you. Ever seen the Aussie climbers getting the Bobcat/Dingo to pull them up the first 100 feet of a big Euc? Thats like me. On a 30 foot Birch.....
