  1. Edit, 3rd pic is actually of an Oak. Told you I was knackered!
  2. Bit of a change this week. Straight felling some big Oak and Sweet Chestnut in a mates wood. I'll add more pics later, but here's the first Chestnut. Inclusion at base, hence the high fell. I'd forgotten how challenging forestry work can be, and tiring!
  3. Thanks fellas. Bit of a new arena for me, but a new challenge I enjoyed!! Not like the dark days of planting in Kielder, planting Sitka 23 1/2 hours a day for Scotty and being hauled by Swanny, The White Death lives eh?

Go for it Reg, but don't burn holes in your top! Saws are like women. Some good, some bad. And that's all I got to say about that.
  5. Nice one Jack. Tree climbing Nirvana!
  6. Missing your input man. You and Quen too busy to post? If so I'm looking forward to the pics...!
  7. This is turning into a p***ing contest now. A 10% reduction on a semi/mature tree can be a great demonstration of an arbs skill. But PLEASE can we stop pretending the tree was begging for it! We are in danger of losing sight of the fact that we are a relatively new industry, and I have heard a roumour that trees did ok without us.
  8. In some cases, true. In others not. I find crown shape fairly species-dependent anyway. Sometimes it's because some well meaning customer has decided to get involved in the spec just as I'm thinking it's beer o'clock!
  9. Planting job from today. Not on the same scale as Mr. Collins is involved in at the moment (thank Christ!). The gap was created by a young lass who didn't make the bend in the ice! 20 Field Maple whips (acer campestre), manure, bonemeal, touch of formative pruning, hey presto! Gap filled. As a bonus we even caught a little thief trying to lift some hand tools from the back of my truck. Good day. Different. More planting ahead, I feel. Also bought my Dad a sequoidendron giganteum whip for an Easter present. £3. Bargain!
  10. I'm learning a lot from this thread. Something not touched on is how come some of my reductions (which I think generally look ok just after doing them) differ greatly in, say, 2 years time? Some (honestly!) look great, others are just formless balls of epicormic mess! Same species, same % reduction, same time of year. What's all that about? Regarding re-reducing the same trees (especially if mature), I've always found it tougher because I've lost the high central anchor I used in the first place. Anyone else find this? Looked at a job today, bloke wants 50% height reductions on 8 Hornbeam stems (cuts would be 6" dia, growing points varied between thin and f-all). Wouldn't accept any advice. I didn't want the work to go begging, so what can you do? I've given him your number Dean, alright?
  11. Proximity to a 5-star Stihl service agent.
  12. You pussies. I'd be limb walking, swinging about, snatching off Reg-sized lumps, all whilst drunk, probably. Seriously, I find knackered Ash a bit iffy. Throwbag-winch etc. would probably be my plan. I suppose a MEWP is out of the running?
  13. Cavities! Why on Earth have you got a miniscule ladder stood up in the back of your Navara?
  14. What on Earth is that lump on the groundie's arm?
  15. Chipper looks shiny Simon! I'd do jobs like that every day if I could! Wouldn't have lowered the top, mind!
  16. Where are you based Tom?
  17. True. I would like to see some more thoughtful planting though. The species list doesn't end with Oak, Lime, Beech and Chestnut! If it needs doing, it's better carried out by someone with a talent for it like you obviously have. Personally, I can make a fell look ugly!
  18. Some very impressive stuff there Tony! But...... Do you not think some of those trees looked shite because they had been pruned in the first place? Right tree in the right place, you can't beat nature! Biggest benefit from most pruning jobs is arb's bank accounts, not trees. Woaahhhh! Controversial!
  19. I've been thinking about this repair bill. Can you stand on the back of your truck and hire yourself out as a MEWP?
  20. I think it makes it more aerodynamic Moz.
  21. But that's what you climb on now Mick?
  22. That looks fine Tony. Give it a few years.....
