  1. Yep, wont be good for the job situation here, reckon we'll see a growth in the number of 'have a go' tree surgeons wearing blue overalls trying to dismantle trees with spanners.
  2. To be fair I think they do the job, maybe not in supreme comfort but so what. Built by brummies so bound to be solid and reliable like erm... Land Rover.
  3. I'm going to put this in my next risk assessment, and state that all toasting and tea making be done over a wood fire, situated at least 10 yards away from porta-cabin/buildings unless safety of installed toaster and kettle can be demonstrated.
  4. Was in my local speedy hire today buying barrier tape (for h&s), overheard a conversation between two of the staff regarding a hired out porta-cabin requiring safety test for the....................................toaster & kettle!!!! had to chuckle & suggest that I hoped all operatives had been properly trained in their use:001_tongue: I know h&s is important, but come on!
  5. Sorry, mentioned you had been made redundant I meant to quote.
  6. Buzz, wouldn't have mentioned this unless you had said that, but a guy I drop waste to (Roger at barr beacon, Walsall/ Birmingham border) has much of his waste cleared by AHS, but the price they pay has dropped DRAMATICALLY. Does this mean its not really working out?
  7. Only use prussics, that's how I was taught, but probably should at least experiment with more modern stuff.
  8. I finished a good weeks work on Tuesday. Nothing in my diary now until March 12th!!!!

    1 job, days work.

don't expect it to stay that way though. Will be in touch when something comes in.

As you're on work exp. I guess your college would want to see stuff from me, any ideas what they would require?

  9. Personally would try and get a tipper from the outset if at all possible. I find manual unloading one of the most demoralising jobs that can be done, particularly at the end of the day when you're knacked. But then you're probably much younger and fitter than me:001_tongue: reckon you'd find yourself upgrading pretty quickly from a flat bed. good luck.
  10. cheers guys, Looking around various posts re. nptc certs, it now seems like mine are 'out of date'. I have the old blue book which according to nptc became no longer acceptable in 2005. I have used this to hire saws recently and purchase new 200t a few months ago and also had it accepted for a couple of jobs on building sites I have done. My insurance company have also accepted it. I want to be above board in this respect but don't want to go to the hassle and expense of re-training/testing if I don't have to. So I don't quite know where I stand. Has anybody else here been in similar position?
  11. Hi folks, I'm back into trees after a few years off and am finding a lot of new regulations, requirements etc. What i'm wondering is how my old qualifications stack up to whats expected now, particularly with regard to working on sites where now health and safety provides a lot of red tape. My qualifications were from Merrist Wood back in 1996. NPTC 20, 21, 22 city & guilds 'tree surgery for craftsmen'. From the ten week course. Also having fun trying to put method statement and risk assessment together, any pointers on this would be much appreciated. Cheers, Alex

    lady drivers

Is your mrs looking over your shoulder as you write by any chance?
  13. Are these the vultures they feed the remains of people to in their mountain funerals? Horrible looking things, there was something on the box about them not so long ago. Wouldn't fancy the job of 'funeral director' there either. They have to hack up bodies and feed them bit by bit to the birds, giving them the worst tasting bits first and saving the best bits til last or else the vultures will just eat their fill of the best bits and leave the rest:scared1: Sounds a fantastic thing to do, and somewhere I would love to go, good luck!
  14. I bought a 7901 a couple of weeks ago from http://www.elmershardware.co.uk based in suffolk I think. Came in at £449 inc vat with free carriage. Quick service, but not had chance to use the saw yet. Been a bit unsure about makita petrol stuff in the past having hired stuff where switches and bits have fallen off, generally not feeling as robust as stihl which is what i'm used to. Maybe just been unlucky. This looks ok, not sure about the chain tensioner though, but like I said, not used yet so too early to comment. Nearly 200 quid cheaper than an equivalent swung the decision and I actually quite like blue.
  15. I remember I had a problem trying to transfer no claims discount from a commercial policy to a private policy or visa-versa (I can't remember which way round to be honest) One way the insurance company would accept, the other they wouldn't. Best to check if you think you may swap at a later date.
  16. google that:001_tongue:
  17. Man and tree can live in harmony.... Unless that is insurance man and tree, or mortgage man and tree!
  18. Bark on about it at arbtalk
  19. I find it funny with the nerves, It varies. Some days can be up any height without a care in the world (almost), but some days find myself definitely more nervous. Nothing related to height, conditions or a particular job being more dangerous, just something mental on a particular day I guess. I can end up with the climbing style of a koala bear.
  20. Never be tempted to put a dead rat through the chipper as I was when I'd dragged one out with some old conifer and the thing was lying there on the block paving. The only thing that smells worse than a dead rat is one thats been chipped. I heaved, and still feel sick when I think about it now.
