  1. Pete, Here some of my efforts. New Spark Arbor rope, First pic is a 16 plait cover dependent splice. (Samson) This one used a modified double braid splice so I could keep the core in the eye to maintain the shape. This shows a break at 28Kn = 2855kg which is not bad. (Approx 10% loss in strength) Original break on new rope is 3204kg The rope broke in the eye so both splices held well.

  6. Flaking also stops "memory" forming in the rope.
  7. After going to the pub for a few hours i do like to work on my cardio, it just depends if there is anyone else at the pub that is keen to help out with my fitness programme.
  8. You need to get hold of some "Armor Prus" Pete.
  9. Is that a fully worked V8 sitting on the front running Nos, you could just about get to 18k if you dreamed hard enough
  10. With all the talk on SWL and MBL everyone has forgatten the termination. Remember when you tie a knot you can reduce the MBL by up to 50% a good splice can reduce by 10% so this needs to be taken into account when calulating your SWL. 10-1 is pretty safe mind you.
  11. I go to the pub..does that count???
  12. Yes they are, great for the family and for getting up to the snow which by the way is falling from the sky right now to sea level. They come in from Japan second hand very cheap about NZ$8,000-$12,000 or 3,000-4,000 pounds.
  13. Is that a car or a pack mule...LOL
  14. No eye or face protection on the final cut??????
  15. The British standard for synthetic fiber rope is 6-1 however SWL or design factors range from 5-1 to 12-1. According to the cordage institute the SWL must be determined by the user and can be different depending on the type of material the ropes are made from. I.e some of the new zero stretch ropes like Ocean 12 can have very low SWL as they do not retain any energy so if they fail they do not whip. I think if it was me I would be working on a 10-1 to be safe and retiring any ropes that show any sign of damage.

50ft fast descent closely followed by a swarm of wasps...You could join the SAS. R U still using the Armor Prus????
  17. I don't' know if you guys have a thing call Berocca, its a tablet you can take, fizzes up in water and is great for hangover. Or... Just stay one pint ahead the hangover, may cause you some problems if you find yourself up a tree though!!!
  18. I would think it has been over heated, check the obvious part like Rad, hoses, water pump etc and see if there are signs they have been replaced also. If they have then there lies the problem. At the end of the day it depends on how cheap it is, if its the right price and compression is showing ok, and the is no water in then oil then you should have no problems. Ask the seller if all else fails.
  19. I agree but you can only train a person so much and certify them as competent. No two splices yield the same response if you put them trough destructive tests so there needs to be some flexibility in the result. This could be as simple as stating that splicing or the splicer must achieve a finish splice break of not more than 15% of the original quote break? This would then allow for "improvements" to the standard splice
  20. Interesting stuff, we have different rules and Reg down our end of the world however what you say about the rope regs is correct, there are standards that rope manufacturers build their product to be it British "BS" European (EN or CE) or American (ANSCI) When it comes to terminations a splice is no different to a knot is it not... There is no standard for splices as there is none for knots but there is instructions issued by rope manufacturers on "how to" on both. So cut the slice of and tie a knot and there would be no issue....... Pointless really when it has been proven time and time again that a splice maintain a greater % of the certified strength of the rope than a knot. Common sense need to prevail in these situations if there is no standard to meet then when should we need to jump through hoops in the first place. Safety in in the best interest of the person on the end of the rope and responsibly must lie with them.
  21. I would be interested in your thoughts after you have a climb on them. They both look to be the same construction so at first glance they would look the same but you can make a rope look the same but perform totally different.
  22. Steve Bullman has got some on trial now so we will wait to see his review. I think it great but the proof is what your guys think. We are hoping to get some over to the UK very shortly so you guys can get your hands on it. Sound like atree has got his hands on some already and likes it!
  23. Ha ha, I would love to see that:scared1:
