  1. With the current epidemic of various diseases affecting lots of different tree species is now the time to stand on the side lines and keep your hands in your pockets or would you if you had the cash splash out on a cheap woodland knowing that even if it has no disease at present there is a real chance it would be infected within the next 10 years. I am asking because over 1000 acres of Sitka Spruce has just come onto the market in the Brecon Beacons at a reasonable price but as disease is spreading from the south would it be wiser to buy in Scotland instead.
  2. Steve Has Arbtalk been rebooted lately. I only ask as I now get a fatal error if I try to get on through the .co.uk site so I have come on through the forum. However all the screens are different with a grey body instead of brown then when you click on a thread it becomes a white background. I dont no whether it is significant but prior to that for the last 2-3 days going on the .co.uk site would reveal an errornotfound file if you then backpage it would then let you into the Arbtalk log in screen as normal. Just reporting now while I still can hope it can be fixed.
  3. Its a forward control MB Trac with 9 tonne trailer but I normally load 4 tonne on MB Trac and 8 tonne on trailer so 12 tonne combined. Really depends how good the roads are as its not a driven trailer but does have hydraulic drawbar steer. The MB Trac also has crab steer. If I new how to post photo's I would but they always seem to big to load up.
  4. No its all down to ownership. You are providing a service to dispose of your customers wood chippings (ie their waste). You could buy the chippings from the customer but you must have a paper trail that will stand up in court. (ie normal contract stuff of offer, acceptance and consideration)
  5. Would it not be easier to purchase the timber from your customer at a nominal amount then you would no longer be disposing of their waste you would actually be carting your own timber which you have paid for by deducting the amount off the bill to the customer. So long as you had proof on your invoice of this arrangement it would be very difficult for EA to prove otherwise in court.
  6. Probably should have been more specific. I sell split logs which is a mixture of hard and softwood from tree surgery. also joiners logs which is softwood PAR timber cut into 9 inch lengths then the offcuts of this processing I sell as joiners noggins. So they can have cheap noggins delivered for £70 a cubic mtr upto split logs delivered at £90 a cubic mtr. I know which I would prefer.
  7. I can get 12 IBC containers (cubic mtr) on my 7.5 tonne curtainsider but not being over a weighbridge I think it would be over the limit for the truck if filled with timber. I normally stick to 6 at a time so that I can unload with a hand dolly and tail lift.
  8. Absolute tosh. If you start out with more than 12% moisture content the machine will not even produce pellets it will just clog up with wet sawdust. Why do you think most manufacturers quote over 25% of the cost of pellet production is the cost of drying the material.
  9. I have 3 grades of log with a £10 difference per cubic metre in price for each grade so if they want cheap they can have it
  10. Just be careful with woodchip it has a nasty habit of spontaneous combustion if it is not dry to start with. Dry woodchip can also combust if it gets wet so a leaking roof might be worse than no roof at all.
  11. We got around the planning permission by designing our panels with lifting points so that the panels are classified as a temporary structure. The panels were 4mtrs x 1mtr being the maximum our 3 tonne excavator could lift and place in position. The panels were designed and manufactured by Wolfenden concrete in Kelbrook near Barnoldswick and they were excellent.
  12. What hire rate do you expect to pay and for how long. I dont normally hire out my MB Trac and 9T Kesla forwarding trailer but it is available at the moment although transport might be the killer as my haulage contractor would expect at least £400 each way from Bolton to the West Midlands.
  13. I think part of the theft problem is due to the bomb site appearance on some sites after mechanical harvesting. Joe public thinks its fair game to take whatever is left as obviously it will only rot in the ground. I personally would remove all timber and brash but then I would upset the conservationists.
  14. Really need to know where the timber is coming from. If its legitimate tree surgery then they will only have limited supply and it may be worth buying up cheap and selling later. Unfortunately theft from forests is on the increase and in these circumstances buying it up will only make things worse.
  15. I use IBC container frames covered with windbreak netting but make sure you get the metal pallet bases as the wooden pallets split. I then use a 180 degree pallet rotator on a fork lift to empty containers, Also use the same system but still with the plastic liner for handling woodchip and wood pellets.
  16. I produce wood pellets from virgin joiners waste which is turned into woodchip and then further reduced in a hammer mill. It is then squeezed through the pellet press die to produce wood pellets. For the process to work the woodchip needs to be between 8-12% MC. Drying of woodchip is the main cost which is why we solar dry our timber. Equipment costs are initially high and the pellet dies need replacing frequently. Producing pellets is akin to making bread you can start with the same ingredients but you dont always end up with a quality pellet.
  17. County 4x4 At the moment waiting for an Italian engineer to fix the briquette press. We had swapped the WID compliant material into pellets for producing cat litter as the margins were greater. This allowed us to produce normal briquettes for domestic stoves which we have been selling. At the moment the machine squeezes but does not compress it would appear the clamp is not working in sequence apart from on start up so we only get 6 briquettes before the machine goes wrong. This is a brand new machine so I would be very wary about buying a used machine. Treestuff We sell our briquettes in recycled stackable 600x400 plastic boxes containing 90 briquettes. When the customer returns the empty box they get a discount on a replacement full box. We market this as Zero packaging and it has gone down well with our Eco friendly customers.
  18. With Biofuel you need a lot more than 20 hectares. The smallest CHP plant I would install to be economically viable requires 5000 tonnes of biomass per annum which would require 300 hectares of forest for harvest on a sustainable basis.
  19. In theory yes but the environment agency have prosecuted in the past manufacturers purported to be using virgin timber when in fact they were using treated pallet wood. As for imported briquettes it could be anything I have even heard of a 50/50 split woodchip and plastic.
  20. Joiners logs are softwood planed all round timber cut into a standard length of approx 9 inches and typically 3x2 or 4x2 we also do Joiners splits which again is joiners softwood typically 18x6 which we process through a splitter to form logs similar to split logs and finally the random offcuts we sell as joiners noggins.
  21. When I deliver logs I always carry a moisture meter so the customer can check the MC on delivery.
  22. You will now. Nestle bought Cadbury earlier this year so its all Nestle products. As regards Briquettes I offer a free sample box of 90 Briquettes to Hetas engineers who sell stoves and they can hand out to customers, Bit of a sprat to catch a mackrel but it works for me. The engineers seem to like them as the moisture content is below 15% so their stoves work to design instead of trying to burn wet wood which just produces tar. Once in the door with briquettes I can then sell the complimentary range of split logs, kindling, joiners logs etc all guaranteed at less than 20% MC
  23. With the demand for Biofuel there will be huge demand for this woodland. Hopefully it will be at reasonable prices so that I can be at the front of the queue.
  24. If the moisture content is less than 12% then we could make into wood pellets or upto 15% for briquettes but it must be virgin timber.
  25. We have stopped using tanks due to the number of thefts from local farms.
