  1. Have done a bit more research and apparently they do a lot in Austria but by drilling a hole into the centre of the tree and then putting a wooden plug over the hole.I know some guys on here work in Austria any chance of finding out any more information as the technique seems far better than that used in America which is similar to rubber tapping.
  2. If you take the side panel off the centre console there is just enough room to mount the passenger seat in front of the little left hand square window. Hydraulic controls can then be mounted where the passenger seat used to be. Not a pretty solution but cheaper than buying a WF Trac. I think Atkinson Voss have a MB Trac 1500 in with turning cab if you want an easier solution.
  3. Okay if I come and collect a couple of loads with my forwarder
  4. Roadside stack prices around us are approx £10 m3 for softwood and £20 m3 for hardwood which equates to approx £40 per tonne and a delivered price of £50 per tonne for hardwood.
  5. The point of a presentation at the APF is that the manufacturer themselves in a lot of cases turn up to present there latest offerings not just the UK agent. Therefore maximum embarrassment for the manufacturer and support for the agent whose hands are tied by the manufacturer.
  6. With most of the forestry machinery world attending the APF why not have an award for the most expensive rip off part voted for by arbtalk members with a trophy presented at the APF. Any thoughts
  7. One solution is the service I offer of taking all the timber off site FOC. I come along with MB Trac and forwarder which allows sections to be bigger increasing your productivity. IBC containers can be left to chip into and removed with forwarder. Added benefit of MB Trac on site if tree needed to be pulled over. Obviously only works with larger jobs but then thats when you have more chance of being overloaded.
  8. Apparently the hydraulic control block is made in Italy shipped to Finland then onto Scotland with everybody putting on there mark up so an 11p bolt ends up becoming £22. Even if it was solid gold I dont think it would be worth that much
  9. Had a classic. Local gave me a call to see if I was interested in some timber. Turned up 3 large trees felled by local tree surgeon which he now wanted me to clear away and pay him sufficient to cover the cost of the tree surgeon. Came as a bit of a shock to him when I quoted him my daily rate for site clearance and no allowance for the timber.
  10. I cannot understand the parents of kids nowadays. I run a Landshare community on a designated area of the farm with allotments and polytunnels. Next I see is three of the youngsters 7-11 climbing all over my wood piles. I screamed at them in no uncertain manner to get off and never let me see them anywhere near the timber as they knew it was out of bounds. I then get questioned by the parents why are you shouting at my children. Does not bear thinking about if any of the piles had collapsed as most of the timber was in 6 mtr lengths and would need the forwarder to lift it.
  11. Seen as it was such a miserable day I decided to repair the hydraulic controls on my Kesla forwarder. Nothing major a bolt sheared on the 8 way linkage and one of the two levers on the 8 way has dropped off. Phoned up for replacement prices. £22 for a bolt and £56 for the lever. Needless to say not impressed. So off to local ironmonger for the bolt which cost 11p and the blacksmith to get the lever welded. Talk about rip off Britain
  12. At the time the chimney was swept was the flues also swept on the stove. Could be soot blocking the flueways in the stove itself. Test with smoking paper in stove and in flue pipe. If more draught in flue pipe suggest stove vents could be partially blocked and need to be cleaned out. Happens quite regular on my Dunsley Yorkshire stove as soot falls down the chimney.
  13. You may have more success if you offer a free collection service. I do this within a 25 mile radius of my farm and it works very well. The tree surgeon does not need to worry about overloading his vehicle plus he can take down in larger sections as I collect with timber forwarder. Also comes in handy if you need a tree pulling over having a MB Trac on site.
  14. Sounds a good advertising ploy. When times are hard headline rates can be the difference between getting a job or not. £10 per hour sounds a bargain but if you string the job out and include traveling time you could end up with more than the quick professional job. Also length of time on site can be perceived as an indicator of the quality of the job undertaken. Slow methodical compared to quick corner cutting. Just a thought.
  15. Try telling that to all the other subbies he has screwed.
  16. Nice to have a rosie picture of Ltd company benefits but in reality its not always that easy. You still might lose your house as lenders are very wary of lending to new companies and normally insist on personal guarantees from the directors. If you accept the loan and the guarantee then Ltd liability is meaningless. Also make sure everything is filed on time and dont rely on your accountant especially with companies house and HMRC as its your responsibility. My first chartered accountant cost me £100 fine with Companies House and £400 with HMRC. I promptly changed to another chartered accountant only for him to miss the accounts filing date and another penalty of £500. Hope you have more luck.
  17. Local to us (Bolton) the rate is approx £50 per tonne delivered
  18. So the choice is fit 4WD or fit a crew cab both of which are standard options on Merc trucks. The limiting factor will be getting under the weight restrictions but with the increasing use of plastic, alloys and fiberglass I cannot see that being a problem. For benefits just read the 3.5 tonne thread and then think of the solution in terms of a DPV compliant vehicle capable of GVW of 7.5 tonnes and the towing capability to match. With air suspension demounts are a practical solution for daily usage.
  19. Sorry Keith had problems with internet but will be in contact shortly. Response has been great and will contact everyone as soon as possible.
  20. Struggling to find legislation for the MAM of 3500kg for DPV. So far only found different driving licence requirement for army personal for DPV upto 3500kgs and DPV upto 7500kgs.
  21. You need to think outside the box ie demount Standard Merc 2.5 tonnes before you start to lighten Used Mercedes-Benz Atego 815 7.5 TONNE in Rotherham. Second Hand Cars SN6008797
  22. PM me with your email address and I could send you the financial projections based on a 5.5 m/s site. I realise the sales pitch within the figures but my site is nearer 6.5 m/s which makes the figures stack up.
  23. That is the main problem finding a lender to finance 600k even though the return is guaranteed by the government Fits scheme.
  24. Thats the problem with tube type turbine. Easy ladder all the way to the top. Although dont know the particular circumstances so cannot comment but it is so sad. You have to respect a tower as your exposed to the elements all the time. Standard erecting safety of double ropes and two on the tower to watch each others back.
  25. Item 2 on the list is dual purpose vehicle
