  1. Funny you should mention that. Had the tail of my Tachyon rope at the bottom of the tree today lying on top of the brash. Couldn't see it at all from up the tree. Fortunately my bobcat driver has a brain as did the other climber who pointed it out to him. Said bobcat driver waited until I was out of the tree before operating around the base.
  2. Yep and that's exactly the kind of thing that had me worried and posting the thread. This job is dangerous enough without some dopey dumb ass groundy not watching what he is doing. Sounds harsh until you think of the consequences.
  3. Reckon that tree looks pretty tidy personally. I hate seeing dirty great ugly stumps all over the place but I've got used to it now.
  4. I'd agree on Love Actually Mark but only because I have a thing for both Martine McCutcheon and Lucia Moniz
  5. Adam and his SJ. Spoilt you are Bro
  6. It's not my gear it's Taupo Distrcit Council's gear and he's the TDC H&S officer wouldn't let him within cooeee of my personal gear. He ran it past my boss who also thought it a good idea ( I think he could see his name up in flashing lights recieving the NZ H&S innovation for 2011) until I got the feedback from this thread. Needless to say, as I already have, the idea was immediately canned when it was realised that our $60K chipper could be reduced to a rather expensive pile of bits I think the whole idea was a good one, after all, the pictures and video I saw when I first started out in line clearance have remained with me to this day. Seeing a man video his own gradual death over a period of a couple of weeks (after a 13KV shock) would, I imagine, remain with anyone. We aimed to do the tests and write a report while filming the whole thing so it could be used nation wide in a training video. We'll just have to rely on our imaginations for now.
  7. Is there any contest? A half cut Shane McGowan with Kirsty MacColl wins it for me everyday and it's not a corny, half pie tune either.
  8. Seconded. Seems reasonably hard wearing too.
  9. I'm presuming you mean when the coil of throw line tangles itself into one massive knot? Especially when you haven't taken the time to coil it back into the bag properly.
  10. Got a 20m and a 37m (cheap off cut of good rope) and hoping to get a 50m. I also have a little 10m for those iddybiddy jobs.
  11. My Grandad (Father's side) was invalided out of WW1 after a mustard gas attack. My Grandad (Mother's side) was in the Royal Marines in WW2. My Uncle was stationed in Germany and brought home a german wife who had made it from East to West Berlin just before the Ruskies got there and then her family proceeded to help smuggle East Berliners over to the west. I learnt all this only a couple of year ago. Funny what you don't know about your own family.
  12. Danny Boy the whole reason the thread was put up was to find out if anyone had experienced this happening before and what effects it could or would have on the climber. As it turns out we also found out what could happen to the chipper so the idea was rapidly binned for obvious reasons. I thought the idea was actually quite a reasonable one as most incidences of a rope going through chipper are hear say (at least the ones that I had heard of 3rd or 4th hand) and we wanted to be able to use the video as a training tool for trainees and experinced groundie/arbies alike. If it saves a life or serious injury is it still such a daft idea?
  13. Happy Christmas all. Hmmmm that cider sure sounds a good idea right now, think I'll join you.
  14. Yep and we want to thank our lucky stars that Hitler was too much of a boof head to listen to his senior commanders who tried to talk him out of opening up an Eastern front and pursuing the invasion of Britain. There are so many ifs and buts though. There could have been many different outcomes to the war depeding on certain decisions being made or not made.
  15. New Plymouth is STILL in the sticks
  16. Oi! you still owe me a freebie
  17. I have to agree Drew. I don't think I'd ever buy climbing gear of ebay. I want to know that it comes straight out of the packet brand new, not dropped or played with and that I have a "paper trail" should something fail or go wrong. Too easy for an ebay seller to disappear.
  18. Around $180 Adam. Just bought one for the arb unit. Going to have a play with it once newby has got it mastered (he can teach me) then I might even buy another one if I can sneak the order number past the boss. It looks like a good bit of kit but having not done any SRT work I'm on a big learning curve at the moment. May as well dive in at the deep end eh.
  19. So Taupo District Council is now the proud owner of a spanky new rope wrench (Drew must be on a commision basis) along with a fair whack of other new gear. Can't wait to start playing tomorrow or next week.
  20. Long lost rotting hulks I'd imagine by now. Maybe one floating around at Horopito. Worked with a guy who used them all the time when he first started out along with axe and crosscut. I still kick myself I didn't learn more from him.
  21. Yeah thought ya might Drew. Mase has already spent the lot in his head and I have a feeling the wrench is on his shopping list. Got to say having read this thread, I'm keen to give it a go.
  22. This is a really bad thread to be reading when I'm heading to Treetools tomorrow with the council cheque book
  23. I'd love an old Matador but it'd cost a fortune to get to NZ. Some pictures might be nice though
  24. Loved and hated working in grave yards in the UK. Loved the peace and quiet and reading some of the head stones, hunting down the oldest etc. Hated reading those of all the servicemen who died in the wars. Always took the time for a little word of thanks before carrying on with the job.
