  1. Well, I gave up being full time self employed in 2011 and went and worked for local government. When I was SE I managed to make ends meet, just, bought a truck and chipper etc but steady work wasn't happening. Council offered me a good package, $65k a year plus vehicle. New management moved in almost 6 months ago and for 5 of those six months my life has been miserable. All responsibilities removed, I don't know what I'm doing from one day to the next, massive case of micro managing, constant undermining, mind games, you name it, it's happening. My 2IC has just given notice and mine goes in on Monday and I go back to be SE and maybe picking up some casual driving work etc to make up the shortfall. Been arguing the decision with myself for a couple of weeks but decided enough was enough after a not so subtle implication of theft yesterday (unfounded I might add). So........am I dumb ass?
  2. What the English should be worried about is the Wallabies having two of the best fetchers in the world in their team. Their scrum is gaining parity (though not quite equal) to the likes of the AB's and England but if Pocock, Hooper and co rule the breakdown, which generally they do, England could be in trouble. In NZ we certainly consider them dangerous.
  3. Apparently I'm getting one of these to trial. Will let you know how I get in if it ever arrives.
  4. Still driving my Passat TDi. Think I would be more worried about how much pollution China's industry is emitting rather than my car but hey, I have a simplistic view of the world.
  5. Photography. I haven't been out for a while due to some work issues but it was an awesome way to just chill out with my own self for a couple of hours while the birds slowly shut down for the day and the sun disappeared over the horizon.
  6. I still get an achey wrist and stiff fingers even though I've had the surgery. The main benefit for me, even though I still have some symptoms post surgery, is the lack of pain associated with the dead fingers. Funny, for saying can't feel them, they hurt like hell.
  7. Had CTS done on my left wrist Christmas before last. Still need the right one done. Popped scar tissue a couple of times after surgery so I still get a bit of tingling but have never had the dull, achey, dead hands and the associated pain since. I'd advise not to go back into heavy work to soon as you can aggravate the surgery site and you'll need it done again
  8. Been enjoying the photos on FB Ian. They have a similar thing here in NZ in Napier, that being the Art Deco weekend. Jazz bands, steam train rides, vintage plane flyovers and everybody dressed up in period clobber. Awesome weekend and something different. And thumbs up for renewing your vows.
  9. Suffer badly with borer, especially after trimming. You could inject and insecticide seeing as damage is minor so far.
  10. Suck it up and go to the dentist. I hadn't been for about 25 years when I suddenly got toothache. I was popping codeine like it was going out if fashion. Turns out I had an impacted wisdom tooth and developed an infection. Suddenly understood what the wife was on about when she said a bad toothache was painful beyond belief. Had the two pulled out under general. Also have an awesome dentist with a wicked bedside manner which makes a massive difference.
  11. NZQA website is quoting around $800 for a qualification assessment. And using a good immigration lawyer is a very good idea as Fredward says. I used one in the end and it saved me a heap of headaches despite the bill.
  12. I honestly can't remember cos it was a fair while ago now but I think I just sent everything off to the NZQA and they told me what everything was worth. Funnily enough they didn't recognise my FTC cert but the guy who cross credited for my NZ arb qualification said there was nothing to that standard in NZ. Just as an alternative; if you're looking at residency and don't meet the points criteria you can always take the side door under the work to residency option. As for your certs; I'd contact the NZQA and talk directly to them.
  13. Few from the last two days. Two Tasmanian Blackwoods, one with multiple failures, decay points, inclusions etc and hanging over a house and boat shed. First one was dismantled by my 2IC in ugly conditions. The second was rigged down using an EWP due to me not wanting to put a climber up it. Incredibly heavy wood.
  14. Same. Find it has more than enough grunt to do all but the biggest dismantles but is still lighter than the 200. The carving bar improves things further. We got ours before the 150 was released and is around the same price. Actually decided I wasn't going to buy a new 201 for my own business but go with either one of these or a 150. I think the 192/193 covers more bases for me so that'll probably be the pick.
  15. We have an older 192 with a carving bar on it. The 200t spends more time locked away as the 192 has enough grunt to do almost everything we do, it's lighter and with the carving bar on it makes for nice fine pruning cuts. Fantastic little saw.
  16. If I was short on firewood and could handle a chainsaw I'd do that no worries. Looks like a good winters worth there.
  17. You can also look at the working to residency option which requires less points to meet the criteria but you need to remain in full time work with your sponsor for two years.
  18. You can get them cross credited via the NZQA I believe. That's how I did mine. Shouldn't be $1500 though.
  19. So, just how good are the cut and climbs? I'm pretty brutal on gear and don't wanna spend a small fortune bringing gear in from the UK if it's only good for a few months.
  20. I work for Taupo District Council (about 70kms south of Rotorua) and also run my own business on the weekends. Also trying to get my photography up and running too. I don't advertise my own business that much as word of mouth keeps me busy. Nothing big, just a tip truck, old Asplundh chuck and duck and two or three guys I can call in as subbies that I trust implicitly. I've worked for both Asplundh and Treescape. Asplundh were the better but that was back in 98-2000. Treescape had many positives and several negatives. There's a massive choice of work and some really really good guys to work with. I fell out with them big time in 2006 and was subsequently crow barred out. Even so, for ease of getting into a job, they'd be the first I'd lean on. The smaller firms I would suggest, will always be the better option if you want close knit and to feel wanted.
  21. There's a Treescape crew based in Rotorua. They're part of the Hamilton outfit. I believe there's also an Asplundh base in Tauranga. I can give you the contact details for the Rotorua Project Manager if you PM me. Do they look after you? That's subjective so hard to give you an answer. Asplundh used to be the better of the big two but I haven't worked for them for a long while and I hear good and bad from both camps.
  22. Not sure if it's changed recently but I believe you can keep pumping out work visas for as long as you have a sponsor and suitable NZ staff can't be found. I believe you can also look at getting a three year work visa in the first instance but that also might have changed. Been a long time since I worked on visas but worth checking out with immigration.
  23. It's NZ. You should be sweet anywhere. Just be aware that with the big firms you can sometime become just a number. Doesn't mean the guys on the crew are bad though.
  24. I recognise that Oak in your avatar Fred
  25. Bloody awesome. Had me and me and the mrs in fits.
