yew hunter: change of shorts may be required: about 10+ year seasoned. tree was felled in the mid 90's i think he said. I bought some yew on ebay a few months ago off i guy i (now) know. Who had a stroke and can no longer to any turning. Well i got a call on wednesday asking if i wanted the rest. needless to say i jumped at the chance, as i thought it was just the odd bit. In the end i got: a 3m dustmaster face mask air wash thingy a LOAD of yew, zeprano, mopane, cherry, oak, monkey puzzle and olive. tools, inc hollowing tools. probably about 100 of the NLA hinges, threaded inserts, screws, box hinges etc. all 22ct gold (plated) and a threading kit. Quite moving actually, nicest bloke ever. cute puppy aswell! Ben
  4. Ive used one at eryc (im a seasonal groundsman) and I recon they are really good and very easy to use. Though at the moment its in the fitters shop for a new middle blade bearing (triple rotary thingy on it) Ive no idea how old it is but its taken everything weve thrown at it with ease. It is prone to leaving divots if it gets hung up on somthing. ie wheel spin! having said that ive never used the honda! Ben

its the shortest so i made the rack to fit that. Its exactly the same length as when i bought it! dont think it was new when i got the set mind. ive got about 15 i think, only really use 5-6 of em though, 1" round, 3/4 square, 3/8 bowl gouge, 1/2 bowl gouge, 3/8 spindle gouge, and a 1" oval skew. all record, got a set of 12 for 90 quid or so. I got tired of putting them on the bench and the bastards rolling off! Ben

well the lathe seems better, but defo having a new spindle made at some point! made a new tool rack this aft, cost me the grand total of nothing, all bits, inc screws from the wood pile! took about 40 mins from scrap to there. Ben

Aye solid works is pretty good, not used in a while though! I am debating modifying it, thoughi m leaning towards 1x8tpi, lh and rh respectivley. as i can get the 1x8tpi duel threaded inserts and face plates easier than the 10tpi. Ben

ahh i get it now, you use autocad per chance? i started off as a auto cad technician but ive lost my copy now so im kinda stuck when it comes to technical drawings. let alone the animations and whatever ive got saved on here! created using the fantastic ms paint... im going to go ask the local precision engineering company to machine up a new spindle for it when eryc get their finger out and pay me. ive got it all back together now and it seems better, still think the outboard end is bent though Ben

managed to get the spindle out, in engineering terms its well worn and battered! unfortunatly my engineering contact is on a racing tour round the uk for a few weeks! and my metal lathe wont cope with something that big! goign to try mount it on my old wood lathe and clean it up with some emery cloth. the bush is probably eccentric hence the noise so gona get one machined up! also outboard thread is knackered so wil be ordering a die nut when eryc get their finger out and pay me! lathe semi fixed. just need to put it back together now! one wire was constantly under tension, so 1 rewire later and its a good un. though the spindle makes a hell of a racket still. think it may be warped or somthing. it has apparently had new bearings so ill ahve to look at them and check the preload. well youve seen the stuff i posted in my first few posts! everyone has to start somewhere so doesnt really matter IMO Flames: how does that thingymajig work? scuse me for being dosile ive just got in from a scout meeting and the kids were being little shits. My lathe appears ot have died this evening in mid mothers day bowl turning. not impressed as ive no money to fix it! I did manage to make a pencil pot for a friends mum (im innocent honest ) but i forgot to take pics of it though! Ben

very nice bob, looks good does that! Can sometimes sand it back to good wood/smooth wood but normally futile in my experience (limited!) failing that you could go for a textured finish, ie loads of faint lines/grooves. sanding sealer can be useful but doesnt really penetrate () deep enough. Ben
