  1. Evening all! Long time no speak! Finally got a bit of time to sort some bits out for friends and family this week, Got to my saw, think its a 2004~ 357xpg. I made the mistake of "fueling" up with chain oil before i laid it up in November. Promptly stopped using the saw and took the carb off, left it to rinse through in petrol after being through an ultrasonic cleaner. I reassembled the saw but never got round to using it until now. Soo... Bit of a pig to start, but figured that was normal after being parked up for a while, finally got it going, idled for a minute or so then gave it a couple of goes up to full revs and back down again... Then seized, it was very hot (though I'm not sure if its too hot, as I've never touched or had the top cover off a running/hot saw!) It did un-seize with a spanner on the flywheel nut, it now turns freely as normal, still has compression. any thoughts on what Ive broken, missed etc? yes I'm positive that Ive used 2stroke petrol! thanks Ben
  2. Here is one I made last year, got the wood from the harrogate powertool show. Burr elm and oak "uprights" and oak shelf. Took a couple of days, watched star trek and drank lots of tea whilst I was doing it. Ben edit: ive since made some dowls to go in the screw holes, and finished the edges of the tiles off with oak "angle"
  3. I have an 8ft length of monkey puzzle in the shed, Ive seen pictures of what it can be turned into on google, Ive just never got round to doing something with it. Its been drying about 4 years I think. Ben
  4. THanks all, means alot coming from you guys! really fun to make, keeps me busy untill I can get back in with the BTCV (TCV?) Ben
  5. Theyr'e great! love em! Ben
  6. They shouldbe there, its all there on my screen! Ben
  7. Hey all, long time no speak! As ive been laid off again ive got back in to the shed just in time to make a wedding present for two of my friends (think i finished it at 5 last night, had to be in derby for 7...) anyways, burr oak bowl, 8"x4" fruit made of yew, with a rosewood insert. Ben
  8. I may be interested depending on if ive got space at the time! Im pretty full up with stuff at the minute! cheers Ben
  9. Thats great man, love it! Wish i had space to do some carving, think the grumpy bugger next door might have something to say about it though! Ben
  10. Ive yet to try it, Im waiting on the posty to bring the bits as i cant get to a shop for the forseable future! cheers Ben
  11. Hey guys and gals, Ive found the cause of the problems (I think!) The fuel pick up line was perished and split beyond belief, It fell appart when i moved it out of the way. Ive got my job back now so things have got a bit busy again at home! thanks for your help! annoyed i dropped one of the fuel tank av rubber mounts though, god knows where that went! thanks Ben
  12. thanks for that, and no worries matty! i cant get it out of my head that it seems to be fuel starvation. It just dies off slowley. im wondering if i drew some gunk or crap up when i started it the night before. It has been stood for a while (about a month..) I know its bad practice to leave fuel in a saw or kit but mum ended up in hospital so had other things to sort out! thanks Ben ps matty- id have thought de-comp valve but ive never had one on a landrover
  13. I didnt think id noticed the fuel before, Ill have a look tomorrow evening, Im out volunteering with the BTCV tomorrow. To me it sounds like its not getting fuel in, how does the carb suck the fuel up? does it pressurise the tank or something? Ive never really thought about it! thanks Ben
  14. Yep found that and it seems to be on its little connector. There does seem to be a fair bit of fuel seeping down the side of the saw, down the side of the fuel tank from just under the top cover clip bit you mentioned, porous pipe maybe? Ive had a look at the de-comp valve and it all seems clean inside, where would I get a manual de-comp valve from? I mean are they a standard thread and fitment? thanks Ben
  15. CHeers for that spud! Yes ive checked for spark when cold but not warm, (ive since replaced the spark plug) As for the decomp i think its automatic, it starts and runs as it should (on the fast idle) but dies after 1-2 seconds. Breather pipe.. where abouts would i find that? is that the fuel tank breather pipe? (if so i think i know where it is) Compression wise it feels the same as its always done, but I may drop it in at the local garden machinery place (if pushed, as hes a bit of a d1ck!) Sorry if this is all a bit basic or a daft question, Im used to working on engines and stuff (mainly old landrovers and volvos) thanks Ben
  16. Hey guys and gals, hope all is well! I gave my saw a good service last night, cleaned out, sharpened, washed filters etc, and got her going last night for a few minutes idling just to check it was all ok for today garden jobs. But!..... Went to start it today, put fresh (been mixed about a week) fuel and chain oil in, and she will only run for about 2 seconds before it dies off. Ive tried it many times and its a no go! ive re-gapped the spark plug, and made sure everything was where it should be. Any ideas? It sounds like its not fueling properly, but its bugging me as it ran fine the other night! Whilst i generally enjoy physical work I dont fancy taking a hedge out with a bowsaw! thanks Ben
  17. Cheers bud, Ive got a camping stove and a big pan that I may use for waxing the ends. Though I think that the paint idea is good, ive loads of old stuff in the shed aswell! Presently ive got 3 small (golf ball size) wasp nests to get rid of! Ben
  18. That is beautiful, Im slightly jealous! Ben
  19. Thanks for that Bob, Im sure i could find use for the wood if it were planked, for shelves etc. I may have a go at some free hand milling, the worst i can make is firewood! At the minute its stacked behind the landrover that im rebuilding, but I now need to move it all so i can turn the landy round. And my shed is full of "useful stuff" (read "crap") so I need to break it down into smaller bits. thanks Ben
  20. Hey guys and gals. Ive got a good few bits of green oak (5ftx 3 of) and a big bit of green yew that needs cutting up for woodturning, Im just wondering what sizes i should cut it too? My lathe can take 8" diameter, weight wise: whatever 1.5hp can spin! Any ideas? I was thinking 8" lumps for natural edge bowl and vessels? I would like it planking or milling down, but i dont know if its possible without a milling attachment. thanks Ben

It is very interesting wood, Ive no offers what it is though! Heres my latest creation: Yew Goblet, semi-green/wet wood. One of the guys i volunteer with at the BTCV is/was a keen woodturning and was throwing out all his copies of woodturning magazine, so I managed to get all of last years off him! thanks Allan! cheers Ben

I keep meaning to get some friction polish, I just never get round to it or have a spare tenner! Wasnt the lathe in the first pic home made? Certainly looks sturdy! It a bit of trial and error with the clock, snainton woodturning had some clocks discounted so just had to get one a few months ago! It is suspended with a black leather shoe lace, all the bits are made of yew, some of it a bit green so ill have to see how it fairs. thanks! hope you all had a great christmas and a all the best for the new year!

Id look into the haydenhd channel on youtube, you can see everything he makes and how he holds tools etc. Taught me loads! Whats sort of finish have you used on the items above? Ben
