  2. Hey all, many thanks so far! ive got my dissertation poster presentation this friday so got a fair bit to do! one question - im sure ive read somewhere that a release of phytophthora ramorum has been granted to aid control of Rhoddy bushes? or was i imagining it? i cant seem to find it anywhere! Ben
  3. Ive got it on DVD watched it a few times, think it was made in 2004. I saw the landy he built at peterborough landrover show 2 years ago, looked and sounded pretty dam good Ben
  4. Hey all, thanks for this! ive been ill for a few weeks so sorry for my absence! ive made a start on the dissertation, all seems to be going well dispite the lack of supervisors at BB that know their trees! Ive got a poster presentation coming up just after christmas so ill have to get stuck in again! thanks Ben
  5. yep thats explorers, been a leader for 3 years ish. its pretty good, tho the health and safety is getting/got outrageous, taking most of the fun out of it. will do man, thanks
  6. that would be good matey, although any weekend except this one! im running a scout camp with 14 -15 year olds so im bound to be knackered at at my wits end! (and its in doncaster ) Ben
  7. For my sins yes im there im on environmental conservation, or that's what the course is called this year! its changed every year i've been there. from something like -environmental conservation, to wildlife and countryside conservation, to something else mental. That's good one, i was working on something like that in my head but not got to far with it as the pub was taunting me. Yes tree related cases are where it will be aimed at. awesome cheers, ill have a read through them in a moment, thanks - Ben
  8. Evening all I'm currently writing, or attempting to write a dissertation on Phytophthora, I am unsure of the exact direction it will be going yet, i.e. a specific disease or a comparison between the most common etc etc. Basically I’m just wondering if anyone has any ideas about a good title, or question. As the only ‘tree expert’ the Bishop Burton College had was fired last year so I’m a bit stuck for people to go too! Also are there any journals out there that would be of use in this area? I have found a thread recently - Articles for ISA Arboriculture Journal – which is very useful; any title of books would also be most useful! Many thanks folks, Also if some one is breaking a series 3 land rover I will be interested in a few bits! Ben
  9. now i happen to quite like 6 wheel landys, it sorta looks right. but that is horrendous, a tree surgeon near me runs a 6 wheel drive double cab tipper, and its a work of art, ill try find some pics. i recon that would look alright if - it wasnt 2 vehicles welded together, ie all rangie, or all 110. Ben
  10. i hear its what all the cool kids do! i have to say though its nice driving something fast, warm, quiet and comfy. all of the things the landy isnt! Ben
  11. yep i certainly did point it out but i got told to be quiet. they were pulling anything over 5 years old, and ANY landrover and giving them a good going over, there was 3 of them under mind at one point tapping things and swinging off prop shafts, they couldnt find any other problems, as its a new chassis! ive a 1977 s3, with a defender 2.5d engine, high ratio transfer case, 12,000lb winch, on parrots bollocks (parabolic's) the volvo is a volvo 360 gle, gas suspension, heated seats, sun roof, eco-meter and temperature gauges in the dash (pretty rare!) and of course rear wheel drive (which in the Wolds winter like we had last year is going to be fun ) Ben
  12. they revoked my mot, due to a loose wheel nut. i took it in for a retest the next day in Selby and it failed on a knackered ball joint and a bit of rust on the tub mountings. i just didn't have time to fix it, so im in the 360 now. cheers for the welcome guys and gals, im provisionally booked onto a cs31 course at askam bryan in 3 weeks i just need to find 350quid! Ben
  13. well its one or the other, they take it in turns on the drive to be my project car, its the landys time now thanks to the vosa guy. the landy ran on veg oil at 60p a litre, and the Volvo is in mid lpg conversion so all cheapy cheap! and about all i do is fix/fiddle with cars saves me a fortune at the garage! Ben
  14. i live in beverley in a student house, so im about most of the time. i might take you up on that offer! Ben
  15. yep a land rover driving student! unfortunately the landy had a run in with a VOSA checkpoint last week so im now back in my trust old Volvo! i also built the landy so i hve a fair bit of experience in that area as-well, a chassis up rebuild of a 1978 series 3! im well aware of how addictive forums can be! ive lsot many a night/day reading up on things i didn even know i wanted to know or even existed! the landy the Volvo the missus or prospective missus doesnt mind the whole tree labour etc etc sorta stuff cos she does it aswell!! Ben
  16. hey all, i've been lurking here for a while, and finally got round to introducing myself! Here goes then! I'm ben, I'm 21. I've been at bishop Burton college for the past 2 years, i am now in my 3rd year (BSc) on the environmental conservation course. i have been wanting to get into this field of work for a lot of years, unfortunately funds haven't really permitted me to get the tickets i want/need. I only have CS30, i failed 31 because the instructor was a bit hung over im specifically interested in becoming a groundsman, warden, tree surgeon or somthing combining all 3! ive done some self employed garden work over the summer, which was enjoyable, the land rover and trailer earned its keep that's for sure! IM also about to start my dissertation on a specific tree disease, (i'm yet to narrow it down to one imparticular - ideas?!) ive managed to get all my tools so far cheap and rebuild them, which is also a little hobby of mine! got a husky 357xpg for 50 quid, then rebuilt it and its sorted now, a husky hedge cutter for a tenner, once again all working! so yeah basically i look forward to reading through the forum again and the inevitable insults about students, land rovers etc etc! Ben
