  1. I have heard the term 'brown oak' before. What does it mean and does it add value to the wood? What has happened to the wood for it to become brown oak?
  2. I realise that it being an oak tree, the branches when they are dead can stay up for a long time. How ever when the branches do finally start to drop there is a very high probability that there is going to be an accident and possibly death cause by it. On the opposite side of the road to the tree there are buildings as well.
  3. Over the past 4/5 years I have watched an Evergreen oak go into to decline. Every time I have passed the tree it looks worse. On thursday when I saw it again there were no leaves on it whatsoever. It is a big tree, at least 20-25 meters tall and it is situated right next to a road that can be extremly busy at times, with holiday traffic as well as peak time traffic. For those who might know where it is, it is on the Malton-Pickering road in North Yorkshire, on the right hand side as you are heading to Pickering from Malton. You know it is in decline and looks dead and there are a number of targets, so what would you do? Would you find out who owns the tree and get in contact with them and ask if they are aware of the dangers or possible insurance claims? Contact the council or what? So there you go.
  4. Speaking to my mate in his garage and he was working on a td5 engine that had blown its head gasket and the was oil everywhere. It seems to be a problem with this engine and he was quoted £1550 for a new head which was not an original part but after market.
  5. If you ever pull an old fence post out of the ground, the only part of it that is rotten is at just above the soil level. The post under ground is rotten very little. Hard packed soil for me. The met posts are rubbish in my numble opinion as well because you can never get the clamp tight enough, and when the wind catches the fence/post it creates movement which gets larger as the year goes on, so the the post wears away.
  6. I was just wondering if there is anybody in Yorkshire who would be able to quote and supply milled floorboards. I would need enough for a dining room approx 2 1/2m X 4 1/2m. I do have the same question in another thread. thanks
  7. Steve, I am allowed to ask on the forum for a quote for milled wood for floorboards?

  8. I think Cobra isn't the be all and end all that you think. I have installed a couple in the last 5 years. The ones that I have helped with appear to be breaking down. Ok drilling into a tree isn't good for it, but steel cable doesn't breakdown.
  9. If there is anybody interested in Yorkshire, in giving me a quote for supplying us with milled timber for the floor, could you PM me.
  10. I think I have got myself quite a find. I put an ad on Freecycle asking if anybody had any wood working stuff they wanted rid of. Within the hour I recieved a reply saying that this person had a box of wood chisels they were willing to give away. It was a box of approx 18 Ashley Iles chisels, a really good set. They just need a clean and if I wanted to, Ashley Iles said that they would resharpen them free of charge. (it says so on their website). Is that a good find or what?
  11. Thanks again for all of the replies. Will let the wife read through it all and we will go from there. Thanks again.
  12. Merry Christmas everyone. The wife and I are thinking about getting a wood floor in the dining room. We would like real wood flooring, so does anybody have any suggestions about what wood we should buy, where the best place to get it from and what sort of treatment would it need? Thanks for your time.
  13. It would be hard to wash my hair, I am BALD!
  14. What is the best way to clean your safety helmet? My stinks like wet dog and I but I wipe it after every use to try and cut down the stink. So what can I do? Any suggestions?
  15. Use an orchard ladder for hedges and fruit trees all the time. Don't know how I did them before getting the orchard ladder. Whats wrong with using a ladder to access a tall tree, its much quicker and saves loads of energy.
  16. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7vYloQYjcU&feature=share]Busted Cars NZ - YouTube[/ame] Is this what you mean?
  17. I was kindly given a load of old essentialARB, treeline and Toatal Arb mags going back to 2006 from someone who got out of the industry. I was wondering as the arb industry is evolving constantly, do you think that the mags will have relevant info in them? Items like tree care could still be relevant but what about itams for chemicals?
  18. Whats it like for burning?
  19. I was thinking that I could get a whittling knife for christmas. Where could I get one from? I live near Leeds.
  20. Spotted these yesterday when it was nice and sunny, so I went along today when it was cloudy and damp. The clump that I took the photogragh of was the newest, with older clumps around the root flare. What is it? Is it an Amerilia species?
  21. Which side of the tree was the water on?
