  1. Sounds like cypress aphid to me and as Sam66s said the denser the foliage the worst it is. We spray it with Bandu (Deltamethrin) over a number of years which usualy helps to get rid of them. With experience I have been recommending to leave the hedge slightly longer because the aphids and thrips, which do most of the damage just love cross cropped hedge. Its easier for them to get into. I have also noticed a lot more spiderwebs on cypress this year and I am wondering if spiders have found another food source and are becoming a predator.
  2. So whats the story? I got bored of how she is a gran, cousin, aunty and has done nothing in her life.

    The Moon

Who on here thinks that moon has an influence on the way things grow? I know it might seem a wierd question but my father in law swears by it when he is out picking mushrooms.
  4. Thanks David. I knew I could rely on coming on here and getting it i.d.
  5. Would like to know what this is. It appears on an old poplar stump that is about 4yrs old in my garden. I also think I found it on another stump in a garden on Friday. After looking at the fungi directory I thought it was Golden scaley cap. Am I right? Thanks.
  6. A spray of Deltamethrin now and then in the spring. I have noticed that there are a lot of spiders on conifers just now and I think the abundance of ladybirds will help.
  7. I was asked by a friend today to look at the trees in the garden. They had to be planted as a 'buffer zone' to seperate their house and green belt. They want to remove some of the trees, birch, alder, hazel, lime and cherry and they wanted a 'professional opinion' if they were able to. The trees had been planted by the builders and there is no rhyme or reason to the planting. I suggested that some of the birches could come out because they were planted too close together and they were competing with each other. Their nieghbours removed a lot of their trees from the buffer zone in their garden and the council have served an order on them to replace the trees they have removed. Does anybody know the law on these 'buffer zones' or can point me in the right direction so I can read up on it myself? thanks yet again for your help Scottie
  8. I would like to say a big thank you to yourself Gerrit and to Hamadryad and to anybody else that contributes to all of the Fungus threads. I am learning so much from it all and all from the comfort of my house. The knowledge that I am ganing from you all is helping me in my job.
  9. Can you explain what you mean by 'instar'.
  10. is there an arbtalk app that could lead you to the fungi directory, knot guide etc....?
  11. Fantastic peice. Thanks Fungus. Could I ask a question? As another idenification of A. mellea would you mention the aroma? I have noticed when I am cutting up some diseased wood you also get a distinct smell from the rot.
  12. Finding this link very interesting. Waiting with bated breath for the answer to when the Epsom Salts can go down. Can you get the salts form a supermarket or do you need to go to a garden centre? What about an injection of prescription fertliser?
  13. So what is so good about Epsom Salt? Could someone explain it to me?
  14. The trees are next to a road and the owner is worried about limbs falling and blocking the road. He will be planting loads of trees to replace the 2 that we have taken down.
  15. If this has been done before I do apologise in advance. But I got thinking today while I was working, but most folk on here can give a big list of things that they don't like about the job, however today I enjoyed my job. We were dropping a 250 year old oak today and I got to realise that I really enjoyed this part of the job. The whole preperation of the job, reducing the back weight, getting the pulling rope set up, getting the gob in and finally pulling it over with the tractor. You get thinking more about compression and tension of the wood and how the tree is going to move when it is on the ground. The satisfaction when everything is logged up and it is safe. Also knowing you can get some of the wood for firewood. I was like a kid in a sweet shop. So is there any part of the job that you enjoy?
  16. Could you PM me the exact location.
  17. Thats good to know. What sort of chip are you after? Would something like Leylandii chip be ok? Always looking for somewhere to tip on Leeds.
  18. I know of some one who is looking for a tree to break up a red brick wall of a house opposite to their garden. So the bigger the tree the better. It also helps with my insentive bonus if they get a tree supplied and planted by the company I work for. If you are intrested the trees I have suggested are Sweet gum Whitebeam Joseph Rock's Rowan Tibetan Cherry Snake barked Maples Strawberry dogwood or a Strawberry Tree They don't want anything that grows too big.
  19. Does the soil around the tree look compacted? Air spading and a good mulch could help.
  20. Question time again! If I want to buy a tree from a grower, what are the sizes I can buy, and what are the terms that are used? Thanks for looking and your time.
  21. Heard a story from someone who had a customer complain about the noise of the chipper working during the day and was worried about disturbing the neighbours as well. The garden was at the end of the runway for Leeds/Bradford airport. There is no pleasing some people.
  22. I think it is from a Paper-back Maple, Acer griseum
  23. How big are the stumps Pigglet? We do stumps and could go to Stokesley. When do you need them done?
  24. What chipper does like Lawson or leylandii?? I found with the Bandit 150 you could feed it conifer all day but to be honest it does eventually clog up and you need to keep reversing the rollers to pull it out then feed it in again. I sometimes think it would be just as quick to throw the damn stuff staight in to the back of the truck!
  25. We use Bandits 150 LD's and it is the dogs bollocks. We sometimes reverse the chipper up to felled Poplar trees and put the butt into the hopper, stand back and let it do it business. I have to admit that if we do use another chipper I really miss the feed rollers of the Bandit. Only negative I have is sometimes its can be too big for some jobs, and it doesn't like Lawson Cypress much.
