  1. There is a horse chestnut not far from my house in Thorner and I have been keeping an eye on it. It is suffering from bleeding canker since I have first seen it. The leaves are now out and are already beginning to wilt and the photos below is an example from the tree. Whats wrong with the leaf? I was looking for leaf miner but couldn't see any. I will be keeping an eye out for it.
  2. This may have been mentioned before and I apolgise if it has but I found this link to Alex Shigo which some of us may find useful. http://www.treedictionary.com/DICT2003/shigo/ I know I will be using it at as reference guide. Cheers
  3. Don't you think its a bit corney and very American "I am scared of 3 things in live, height, electricity and woman and I am married too" Great video though, amazing control by the helicopter pilot.
  4. Ok it may not be what I do from day to day but here is a craken video for you. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tzga6qAaBA]YouTube - High Voltage Cable Inspection[/ame]
  5. It took me a while to figure the 'burp' out. I thought that when I filled up the saws, the saws were using different amounts of oil between fills. Mind you when I showed my climber of 13yrs, he didn't know about it.
  6. Fraid not. Just got busy and caught up with things. Sold many logs yet Woodpecker? If you read Tree News, the country is crying out for logs.
  7. Very much so a bleeding canker, it was positively gushing.
  8. Could the stored starch be what was spraying all over my leg after I had bored in and then hammered a wdege in? I looked at the bore hole today and there was a huge amount of red goo there. If someone could tell what the proper term for 'red goo' is, I would be grateful. I wish I had my camera to take photos!
  9. Today I was part of a team taken down a mature Horse chestnut that is suffering from the dreaded pytophara (if is is the wrond spelling I am sorry, but you know what I mean). Well I noticed that it was secreting red goo from the bark but this was only on the "sunny side" of the tree. I didn't notice it in the morning but by 11am approx it was there. Today was warm and I was just wondering if heat has an effect on the disease of the tree, the cambium is thinner so it can come out easier? Is it the tree defence working, trying to push it out? There was no red goo on the shaded part of the tree that I could see. This might seem strange to you but these were my thoughts as we were taking it down. Any response would be good. Thanks Scott

    MEWP or Climb

I brought this discusion up at work this morning and all I got from my boss was a scarcastic laugh. It may become a case in the future that we have to use MEWPs but are you going to put the extra £250 (thats a ball park figure) to hire the mewp on to the customers bill? There is always going to be someone who will climb the tree, which will be a lot cheaper. MEWPs or climbing, not really bothered. Don't have any problems with both.
  11. You might be surprised that mallard ducks actually nest in trees. Not a very well knowen fact but there you are.
  12. I am sort of going to defend the 'blue rinse brigade' on this. Speeding is an issue in Thorner where I live where cars are coming into the village at nearly 50mph when they should only be doing 30mph. I walk along side the road with my 2 1/2 year old son and it can be scarey for him with cars speeding by. The radar gun held by the the 'busy bodies' might make the locals slow down and watch their speed. In the 2 weeks before I started with Bartletts I was caught speeding twice and I was doing less than the 41mph stated above. It would have been good to have recieved that kind of letter rather than 6 points and paying out £120. It didn't look good to my new boss especially as I became a driver.
  13. Is this a competition, cause seriously I think it could be a roost for a little owl.
  14. We are going to be installing a stove next month. It will be in our living room and at the moment we have a gas fire with a marble surround. My question is, should we have the stove free standing or recessed into the old fire place? What would be the advantages and disadvantages for both. If it was free standing I don't know if it would just take up to much floor space. the stove is only about 5.4kw, so it is not that big. It will be the slate which it will be standing that takes up most of the room. Cheers
  15. Where you going? Have been trying to get to go with someone. Leeds Wall isn't too far away from me.
  16. So you have done something like it before then? Thats what I am thinking of. Something that would make you sweat and sort the men out from the boys.
  17. Not paintballing at all. A Go-Ape type of thing more much more interesting challeging and dangerous. A leap of faith type of idea. Platforms at crown height on to tops of telegraph poles? A big play ground as long as its 40ft above ground! The idea comes from the time I spent in America and there was just a huge play ground in woodlands and it would just be your imagination that would let you down. I suppose it would be just like Go-ape.
  18. Now I have finally found the thread I can add a bit to it. Thanks to Woodpecker for the use of his yard. Thanks go to Barry 'the chap from orangeplant' for bringing his shredder. Thanks to Craig for showing me to footlock, now I can manage to get of the ground (just). And thanks to everybody else for making the effort to come along. I put photos on the Climbers section under the thread for Saturday and if I can find a way of transfering them I will. Dean how big is your woodland? Just had some crazy ideas if you are up for it.
  19. Is the last one chicken of the woods?
  20. I am trying again to post these photos I took when I was in Slovakia. I have been 'watching' this tree for the past 9 years since I first went over. You could say it was on its way out!!
  21. Thanks to everybody who made the effort to turn up. Thanks especially to Woodpecker for letting us use his yard.
  22. Directions Easy enough. Get yourself on the the A65 and Woodpeckers yard is off the roundabout for Ghyll Royd School, half way between Ilkley and Otley. Can't be any simpler. If you have the Easy Read West Yorkshire map it is on page 9 E3. Barry from Orange Plant might put up a banner to help you. Look out for it.
  23. Penfold I might be going with Barry from Orange Plant. Its the least I can do since I have pestered him all week. Woodpeckers yard is easy to find, I found it at my first attempt this afternoon.
  24. Ok, the decision has been made by me that this get together is going to be at Woodpeckers yard. His yard is just off the A65, opposite the Burley in Wharfedale junction. It is going to start at around 9.30am next Saturday (28th), there should be enough parking. Let me know if you are going to come.
