had good long day at the show friday and weather held so that was handy, it was a lot more foresty than arb stuff( probably could of guessed that from the name!) really enjoyed watching the climbing loads of entrants of all levels and lots of help and encouragement from the more experienced guys, might even sign up meself next time. gregs stall from cork with the arb gear seemed very popular, good prices too:thumbup1: will put up some photos of the climbing when i get a minute. so thanks to the organisers of the show, had a good day. carl

charity shop suit cases bout five euro each!! even got one with wheels for when iam lazy or want to look like an flight attendant. great value and work fine.

you can get pulleys etc at any arb shop online, ie honey bros or fr jones( see ads on the right) slings and shackels can be got at agri stores they are tough and fairly cheap, just make sure all the components are strong enough for the job and keep away from the line when its tensioned. have fun.carl

the first winch in your link might move the log if it wasnt too big but only about 8ft at a time as it has a very short cable. your diagram could work but you would need a pulley on the anchor point tree, and good comunication with the driver. if you can get the pulley higher up the tree then will lift the log as it pulls. how big is the log?? any obstructions on the ground increase the forces loads. the boat winches in your link wouldnt be siutable. carl

hmm know what you mean , just opted out of prunning a large macrocarpa this morning, might try this afternoon as can change so quick. gona pack the wellies i think and maybe buy a new climbing jacket!

intresting thread thanks, just a thoretical question, what saw could be modded to pull a 24" bar comfortably and whats the price comparison compared ie ( new small saw plus modding costs)with the typical larger non modded saw in that bar range?? thanks carl

what we have done for smallish stuff is place the block high in the tree as normal then instead of tying off the branch to lower, chocker a sling around it with a pulley on it then run the rigging line through the puley and tie the end off back at the high block. this does use a lot of rope and is hard on the hands but is quick and enables the groundy to lift and hold 2 or three times more than normal without a capstan, in essence the whole rigging system is a fiddle block. we do have a self contained self locking fiddle block set up but its slow and awkward in conjunction with rigging so mailny use that for pulling over treees. hope this makes sense. carl

i have a tanaka machine and its good for light stuff and doesent wiegh much, the head doesnt fold back on itself though which is a pain, it dosent cut as thicker stuff as our old stihl one at work but comes in a fair bit cheaper than stihl, so all in all i feel its a good value machine for lighter cutting. carl

its on 10th and 11th may, theres a thread on general chat about it, should be good, hope you get your saw, its a pain having to keep paying more for stuff.

could be handy to try out a few different harnesses, hitch set ups , srt etc before you buy any stuff to see which feels best

have you tried honey brothers? they have shipped a saw to me in ireland in the past, but may of changed policy since, failing that a day out at the irish forestry show in may in loais, i would imagine there should be good prices on machinary.

thanks grass hopper, so camping sorted what about the weather then!!! i have bought a few bits from the husqy centre in cork and the prices on the arb gear are good, the range is a bit small but i guess that will grow with more custom.

ye should be good, really looking forward to seeing the climbing comps in the flesh, some big trees there too. was hopeing to buy loads of stuff but probably have to make do with a stihl cap n keyring! i wonder what the prices will be like as i have always found it cheaper to buy in the uk and ship rather than buy local which is a shame. is camping allowed then?? should be the site is massive. carl

we made our own system from three concrete blocks in the ground with braided wire loops from each block then the main one in a triangle pattern tensioned with a ratchet fence strainer. all the wire componets were put together with wire crimps, hard to explain and it was some time ago, all the trees are still upright and saved a fortune over ready made kits. i could think and explain better if your interested. thanks carl

love those old dodge trucks, although prefferably without the rust that my old dodge camper has!! so gona be broken soon if anyone wants any bits from it get in touch. thanks carl

i have these peltor ones and love them, not sure about the radio though as not keen on adds etc so just use the ipod input, really make the day go quicker on certain jobs:thumbup1:

both honey bothers and fr jones have delivered to me in ireland within about three days so happy with that and dont generlly order anywhere else. carl
