Its not a huge piece, so not necessary really, its a feling cut anyway and they will never take the saw, its outboard stepcuts that can be risky and I only tend to use them when pruning small stuff to avoid splitting. In that clip the saw was draped over a stub I think and did'nt fall far.

Some of those look quite good Jamie, I used to be able to knock out 20 handstand pressups (against a wall) no prob, I bet I couldn't do one now.

Both the fallen oaks ARE a play park for the kids, or at least they should be. Think back to when you were 10, passing those trees without climbing on them would have been impossible. Something tells me that these days it'd be frowned upon. -
I don't work out full stop, however I tried a few dips the other day, I was surprised how few I could do, barely 10. I haven't noticed any lack of strength whilst climbing though and so I wonder; as you get more experienced, and therefore more efficient, as a climber do you need less strength? JJG reckoned that the optimum weight for a climber was 12 stone, but what if as you get more and more efficient and need less strength and burn less calories you get fatter and fatter. By this theory the best climbers would be the fattest. There's a few old timers bound to agree with this!

Bowline on the bight is a handy one to know when you want a loop in the middle of a line, slightly easier to untie than an alpine butterfly.

Rigged it up in the yard last night, its well comfy. There's a cheaper one without the mosinet too.

Ammonium sulphamate is probably better on woody stuff like brambles but its not for sale to the public anymore, maybe still ok to liscenced trade. Its what I use for stump killing.

NTP Monkey, we don't have a formalised plan, we'll just monitor it annualy and see what needs to be done. Probably a reduction in height in a few years time. The only problem is its in a private garden so there's no guarentee that we'll get another go at it, hopefully we will though.

We nearly did actually, it came off the first one ok and got wrapped around a peg, luckily i didn't have to go back for it.

I am thinking of selling logs by the net next year, anyone know how many 50 x 80 nets to the ton or to the cube?

Nice to have done it, but TBH my hands were that sticky by the time I got down I could have gone back up like spiderman.

This was phase 1 of a retrenchment program for this oak, it had some large breakouts in the past and a small bracket that I took to be Ganoderma applanatum at the base, the rot isn't too bad so I think its got years and years left in it.

Just enjoy it, and try not to spend too much time wondering why you never bought one before.

OK Things are coming allong nicely, Here are some directions that you can print off. Also if anyone has problems either with transport or with accomodation ie. tent etc please post it here that way someone else may see see it and be in a position to help. BTW I have given up sleeping on the floor and bought one of these: Bushcraft Shelters and Hammocks A lot cheaper than a tent and probably comfier too. Microsoft Word - Document2.pdf

best chipper to buy for £6000approx under??

My LDV pulls a greenmec220 which weighs 1400kg.........slowly. BTW I started off with a greenmech 150 like this: greenmech wood chipper ec150 (6inch) on eBay, also Chippers Shredders Mulchers, Power Tools Equipment, Garden Plants, Home Garden (end time 21-Apr-09 19:56:40 BST) It was bomb proof, it had a 3cyl diesel aircooled engine and never let me down in three years of hard work. Very good on conifer too.
