Thats what I wanted to hear, BTW on the Stihl website the 500, 550 and 600 all have the same cc's but different airflows, anyone know if I can tune it up a bit?

Went to the auctions today and bought a stihl BR500 blower and an MS200. Anyone used the 4mix blowers? It seems powerful, I wondered if there are any reliability issues with the 4mix? Anyone want to buy an MS200?

Thanks James, welcome to the forum, I would'nt mind seeing a climbing comp, I would even have a go if all the other competitors were oldish and slow like me. Went to the auctions at Newtown ST Boswells today, I stopped off and took some pics of a couple of the silver firs at Abbey St Bathans, they do look good. The last pic is of some trees I planted as whips about 15 years ago, they're coming along nicely.

Very true, if you need a chainsaw then the branches are plenty big enough to take your weight anyway. Keep your main anchor in the 3 -4 inch range but for secondarys I sometimes go down to 1" ( species dependant ).

IMO there's nothing wrong with using a 14 or 16mm rigging line as a climbing line as long as its labeled and lolered as such. It'd be a heavy lump to drag round a tree though.

Sounds ok, I'm not much into horses myself but if the trees are good then why not. Do you have any pictures of the trees there? If we post pictures of the trees and camping etc on each potential site it will help everyone to decide where to go. I'll try to put up some better ones of A St B.

The stuff is going to the right of the pic, tbh it looks like there's no room but there is. There is loads of stuff underneath so speedline is really the only option, other than a crane.

I'll be tensioning it off a vehicle as the stuff is being sent out into the road and there is nothing else to use. We are removing a large limb off an oak due to a hazard beam fracture. Its the third limb up on the RHS in the pic and is approx 60cm thick at the base and 10 - 15 meters long. It can go in small bits though and the heavy timber couled be lowered conventionaly.

I have always felt that speedlines were a way of overcomplicating an easy job but I have pulled in a job in today where I will have to use a speedline. I was wondering whether it is better practise to tie off the speedline at its top anchor point or run it through a pulley / crotch at the top anchor point and then down to the base of the anchor tree? Any other helpful tips most appreciated.

Looking forward to this, sounds like we could have a good crowd. If any one can arrange a suitable alternative venue please post some details on here so we can decide where to have it. Abbey St Bathans is still fine with me but I know its a bit far for some. As for dates how about we all keep the weekends of May 9-10 and May 16-17 free, If the weather is crap on the first one we'll go over to the other.

I think you don't actualy have to have any quals, but the LANTRA PTI would probably be a good one to get. It only takes 3 days. So take the job. Just noticed you're in fife so SAC would be the place to go.

I thought I had found some the other day, I took a sample down to Forest Research where Stephen Hendrie told me what to look for. The on I had was not ramorum or kernoviae and probably just a "lesser" phytopthora. This should help: http://www.defra.gov.uk/planth/pestnote/kern.pdf

Sadly a similar incident happened a few years ago in Kelso, the fire engine clipped the kerb and crashed through a stone wall very similar to your pic. One fireman was drowned I think.

Go to the start menu and look at "all programs" then open the microsoft office file and outlook 200? should come up. Mines 2007 and the instructions i gave earlier would work for that. On your tools menu are there any arrows for drop down menus?
