  1. Went to look at a job today. End of terrace house with a Cherry in the side/front garden. Surprise surprise the roots are lifting the paving stones and so the client wants the tree felling. The tree is about 1.5 metres away from the side elevation of the house. Its about 30cm diameter at the base and between 5-6metres tall. Knowing what (as we all do) Cherry roots are like, I think it's a safe bet to assume the roots are nearing the building if not already there!! So the question is would you fell it in one foul swoop and risk heave or stage the felling over a couple of seasons?? My gut instinct is to stage the felling of it! I could get some piccies if that would help. Thanks y'all
  2. Sorry to go off topic but that's a great avatar James. Favourite Brent quote???
  3. Sounds like you've hit a nerve there Andy!!!!
  4. I used one for 6 years and never had a problem. It's all down to where you place the wood on the splitting table. ie. the cone spins clockwise (from memory) so if you make sure the majority of the ring is on the right hand side of the table it won't flick and get those pinkies. Don't get me wrong, I have seen fingers crushed on them, just a little care is needed, just like we're used to when we pick up a chainsaw.
  5. Is that the Sthil bio for £55?? I'll be in touch!!
  6. And I know this has also been covered in the past...but what do we all think of veggie oil from the supermarket as chain lube???
  7. FTR i use stihl bio oils and buy 20ltrs at a time but its still not cheap Me too mate, that's why I wondered if there was any other alternatives
  8. I know this has been covered before, but I need to get some new bar/chain oil. At the moment I use sthil bio-oil, which I think is very good but also VERY expensive. I am keen to stay with the bio-oil route but wondered if there are any cheaper recommendations you guys/gals can suggest. Years ago I used some well dodgy Oregon stuff, it was green/white in colour and really runny (almost like water)...didn't rate it. Suggestions please......I'm running really low.......as usual left it to the last minute to order in new stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!
  9. Try Thorne Engineers in Wheldrake York. They are really good guys who really do a good job of re-furbishing chippers then selling them on.
  10. "disco leg" I like it!!!!
  11. I was thinking along the exact same lines myself. Trying to figure out how to find if they need any extra help out there and how to go about organising it?? Let us know if you have any ideas?? I'd be well up for a few weeks in the land of the baguette!

    Boa????

The kit (for a small tree up to 40cm/2tonnes) comes in at just over £100+vat. Add on your daily rate and you're away. We are thinning the crown aswell so have got half a day on it in total. (Hope it's enough) The kits for the larger trees are obviously more costly.

    Boa????

My clients tree is in a private pinetum and I think as josharb said they also want to plant a re-placement tree. The bracing should give 10-12 years at least, by which time replacement should be a decent size, then I guess the original will be ready to come down.

    Boa????

Also....... what kind of tensions am I looking at across the span??? Am I right to assume that as the splices etc are all done without tools, then the tension is also going to be as tight as I can do by hand and then the shock absorber does the work. The question is "How slack does the cable need to be???" Thanks for the advice.

    Boa????

Just taken delivery of a Boa cable bracing kit (thanks Jonsie) but the instructions are in good old german. I can figure out what most of the kit is for, we have rope, shock absorbers, plastic disc (year of installation), red tape and webbing sling. There are also some thin plastic things about 1metre long and tappered at each end, what are they??? Do they go in the webbing sling along with the rope around the limbs to be braced????? If so what function does this perform???? Or am I being very dense??? Thanks peeps.
  18. Check this old thread out. May be useful/???? http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=4553
  19. Been wondering myself about doing my Terrano. Heard lots of diferrent results from good to bad. So I am now most confused.
  20. Me too mate, they put the joy back into spiking. Do you find that after a bit of use the velcro that attaches the pad to the shaft doesn't work so well, what with all the dust and debris kicking around........maybe I should just clean them one in a whille!!!!!!!! Top spikes though, couldn't entertain a pair of buckle up one's now.
  21. Scary times await us all. And is it me or does there seem to be a lot of us at home today scratching our balls posting threads or replies???
  22. And a Marc Almond shaped dog chew!!!
  23. Hello mate, sorry but I can't remember who you are. Can you jog my rather bad memory? Cheers
