  1. I agree on that bit for sure
  2. Welcome to the dark side - there's no going back now you've seen the error of your ways A few have said that but I can't say I've noticed (but my hearing's not great anyway ) Nearly all my other saws have old type exhausts (with a straight tube rather than a spark arrestor) - do you think that might have owt to do with it?
  3. I haven't yet, but it's something I hope to at some point, even if it ends up just being a little shed in the garden
  4. He's usually got a selection of machines on ebay - some of them look pretty good too
  5. Nowt too big but been a nice couple of days burning up after clearing some Hawthorn on a SSSI site. Got two more days to do in another dale which should be a bit bigger fires. We couldn't find the bucket oven so did the taties in the fire itself, bit fiercer heat so they were a bit crunchy yesterday but today they were spot on (especially accompanied by a Fray bentos too:biggrin:)
  6. So does a decent 242 - they're just getting a bit hard to find
  7. Finally got chance to get out on mine properly on Monday - had a bit of a mixture of stuff to do over the day starting with some respacing/brashing in among some small Oak and Birch - nice and light, very responsive and plenty of poke. In the afternoon had some bigger firewood to fell and it properly shone. It was the sort of Stuff I'd have been inclined to take the 357 into (12-15" Birch) and the 550 bossed it very well. Loads of power through the back cuts and it's fantasticly flickable when snedding, even handling bigger forks without any noticable bogging. Reckon on getting about 55mins to a tankful compared to 45 or so when using a 353/346, so that seems pretty good so far too. We compared it weight wise to a 242 the other day and there's so little in it by feel - I still think in use the 550 feels like a 242 that's been given more power
  8. I'd agree with that - the pre TD5 Discoveries are a really nice place to spend a day driving. Really miss my old 3.9
  9. I'm ham fisted and found them fiddly putting it back together - that's all. It does seem a bit gimmicky though. Surely the fact I've gone for a modern saw with electrickery and primer bubble in the first place is progress on my part at all
  10. Discovered the captive bar nuts for the first time a few days ago - not sure I like them as yet.
  11. By calling in someone with bigger gear to deal with that job or that part of it. The kit we currently run is probably the bigger end of compact and works well on the right sites and even on not so ideal sites it doen't do too badly. We've been running the same extraction route with the forwarder for months and can hardly even see where we've been with it, even over the last few weeks - Big machine would have left huge ruts by now. We tend to get jobs that are either too small a site to justify hauling a bigger machine, or sites where access with a big machine wouldn't be easy without cutting big racks in etc. That said though, the last job we're on should be getting on for 7-800 tonne by the end of it - all forwarded out with the trailer in my avatar.
  12. Have you been reading the turtle book again (Chickenhawk'll be on it's way tomorrow )
  13. That's the difference between arb and forestry I've always been top cut first.
  14. Stan, Simon and Cocker did a cracking job on his old MAN - don't reckon it would be much harder to do one to demount as that was on a subframe anyway. Maybe just use Ali instead of stainless box.
  15. Last lot of bigger sycamore I felled was bought by Chantlers and had had plenty of interest before that too. Don't know what it went for or where it went but it wasn't Firewood or chocks and was worth more than what Nidd valley would pay for stuff to do sofa frames.
  16. I paid £500 all in on 13" - same as our dealer wanted for a 346.
  17. We had one on demo for a week and I think deep down I almost didn't want to like it - but it was really good. Any of the bits I didn't like were far outweighed by the power delivery and handling. Liked it that much I bought a 550 off the back of it.
  18. I've still to let rip as been trying to get caught up forwarding but initial few minutes Wednesday morning were pretty encouraging - feels more similar in power to a 357 and delivers power in a similar way to the 560. If it's reliable, then it should knock the socks off the 346 quite comfortably
  19. I think in some cases number 1 is right (even if it shouldn't be). I think there's a happy medium somewhere between shiny and knackered
  20. I've worked with a TW 150 on tracks that had been fitted with an FMV hydraulic winch that was previously fitted onto a forwarder crane and it worked very well both in pulling over trees and also for some light extraction. Think it was attached to the undercarriage rather than the actual chipper but can't be sure - either way it took it well. Haven't got any pics though
  21. Until you fit a TDi I wouldn't bother as your TD will find it hard work. I was thinking about a disco box for my 90 a while back and decided that for the extra little bit of MPG, the taller gearing was more of a hindrance as it drives pretty nicely as it is, and you just get used to going a bit slower on the motorway than you would in a "normal" car.
  22. Think it's a canadian built one by JMS/AM Machinery. If it is, it will definitely be on electric brakes. Think Lee Lightburn brought one over a long time ago and set about converting it to UK spec and said never again as it was easier to start from scratch not only sorting the brakes but making it so the nose weight was half sensible
  23. I've gone for a 13" to start with. Got a fair bit of small stuff to go at first, got a 15 and 18 kicking about that will fit though so might try them before too long.
  24. Dunno really - went in on saturday asking when they were due out and he said they had one due in today or wednesday. Nope, not yet going to let rip tomorrow I don't but I needed a new little saw, surprised how much I liked the 560 and got this for 346 money. Got to take a punt once in a while and if it's no good I'll shove it one ebay as lightly run in
  25. Woohoo
