  1. Looks easy doesn't it, when you watch someone else doing it. I've welded everything but ali. Should be a laugh
  2. Considering good 12 ply plywood is £45 a sheet that price isn't bad. I was going to get some gas and a reel of ali wire and have a go with my mig, it's easy once you get the settings right and got the weld area clean
  3. It's since the chip box went on that the top end suffered and it struggles more uphill. Before it was fine You drop in behind a big rig and you don't need any throttle, it drags you and the chipbox along no problem.
  4. Steve, It has to be 5mm to be welded and because there'll be no angle iron to support it. It will still weigh less than 3/4 ply. Matt, yes, that's similar to my drawing but the sides will taper in as well. I used to use a tarp, but the bandit chippers discharge is so fierce it rips them to shred. The mesh front lets a load of dust all over the cab and stops it being nice and shiney
  5. If thats the pro's, god help us.
  6. Plenty of pics of the winch I have to say ???
  7. Good example of how it should be done. Nice work BigGUN
  8. I am have a little problem with my chipbox. I have drove to and from Tadcaster today which is a 70 mile round trip. Going there, the Landy went like billy-ho, but on the way back the headwind really made it a struggle. The chipbox has a huge flat front on it which sticks out the sides and top, which is obviously acting like a huge sail and really makes going into the wind a problem I have thought about having a custom back made out of say 5mm aluminium. It would slope from just below roof level upward towards the rear and from the behind the cab side outwards. Tried downloading a sketch but had problems I would want stifferners on the top and sides, but would have them on the inside not the outside . I would want to take off my side boards leaving the steel tipper deck and the ali box would have angle section along the outside bottom edge to bolt it down to the deck and to the rear corner post to utilize the existing tipper tailgate. It will have welded seams only, no bolting thru to angle iron Has anyone built one out of Ali before and know the pitfalls, disadvantages and cost Or has anyone got any other suggestions, apart from roof spoilers The little hatch on the front is for my ladders to stick thru.
  9. My sense of humour can be a bit deep for some people Huck
  10. I thought I was old. Passed my HGV2 in 1982:wave:
  11. I like it, "here's a pic with a man for scale" What did you do, just grab a man and say stand there!
  12. My brotherinlaw got up one morning, got in his car to go to work, it wouldn't start. He opened the bonnet to find his turbo charger had been carefully removed. He had fitted it, brand new, 2 days before. Hmmmm
  13. You just get the owner over before you fell it and say to him, "How high do you reckon that is?" Then you fell it, if it doesn't fit then you blame him:wave:
  14. Yes, quite annoying when the kids lift up the ladder isn't it?
  15. Sounds more like someone who knew they were there. A lot of thefts are by someone or information passed on by someone who has been in or seen what you have.
  16. Too much like hard work. Just fell the tree and measure it on the ground:icon14:
  17. My, do things move on. They are awesome motors from what I have seen of them on off road challenges. The old MK deserves much respect, till you take them off road and I mean "off road" you don't realise the old girls capablilties. This was the wrecker we had http://www.rememuseum.org.uk/vehicles/wrv/vehaec.htm This was replaced the week I came out with the Foden 6x6 recovery vehicle. http://www.rememuseum.org.uk/vehicles/wrv/vehfoden.htm When I was in Cyprus with the UN we had a very antiquated Leyland recovery vehicle. Can't remember exactly what it was but it had a petrol engine and wooden floor boards in the cab. There was a little sign near the gear shift saying, "Do not exceed 30mph otherwise transmission damage will occur" Say no more This is the one we would of liked. http://stroicar.com/eng/equip.php?ID=323
  18. Hits you in the stomach everytime I hear something like that. Just reminds you of your mortality. You need to stop and take stock every now and again. Condolences to his family also.
  19. Yeh, I know exactly what you mean, no perspective. The last one coming out forward gives you a better idea, but from the piccys it looks small. I used to set out and reccy off road courses in the Army, I was a mechanic working on landrovers and Bedford MK and TM. I wrote off a TM taking it down a hill and standing it on its nose at the bottom. I also ripped the transfer box off on the knife edge at the top of the slope, severing air lines, which is why I went down the hill a little fast. I have also taken a fully kitted out 22tonne recovery truck on an extreme course, ( frightening) I highly recommend an extrmeme off road course if you have never done one, you'll be amazed what your mog can do, you'd need to lose the chipper though. Believe me, you wouldn't believe where a landrover will go with the right setup. Mines been jacked up slightly and I run 30mm spacers and Anaconda tyres all year round
  20. Update on Pump. As you know I fitted the recalibrated pump back on and it was terrible, up hills in first gear when I normally come up in third. I advanced the timing, no different. I retarded the timing, smoked plumes of white smoke and ran like a bag of sh1t. Once I knew all the setting were right I adjusted the maximum fuel screw and turned it in 3/4 of a turn. Bingo, goes like shite off a shovel and no smoke. excellent! The maximum fuel screw is at the back of the pump, just above the four pipes coming out of the back of the pump and just above the stop solonoid. It has a locking nut and an anti tamper coller, you should be able to turn it in 3/4 of a turn before the collar locks. If you try it be sure to mark and count how much you turn it so if it doesn't work or smokes too much you can return it to normal setting. It's like someones put two engines under the bonnet.
  21. Nowt but a mole hill that mate. You under estimate landrover
  22. Who taught you off roading Skyhuck?? With chipper on front, reverse down banking!! Only joking, whichever way you's have done it chipper would have caught, either on the banking if you reversed or at the bottom of the hill forwards. My landrover would have pissed in there no problems. Been down far worse than that and then spent hours on the winch at the end of the day getting back out
  23. I have used Greenmechs since and none performed like that one did. I have had the same problem with another chipper I had, the bearing came loose and eventually got sloppy. I had to take the shaft in and have it built up with weld then re-turned on a huge lathe. Nice to hear your still about anyway, us old boys can still climb......just.
