I have some big 3 foot to 3.5 foot slabs, dry around the 2.5" I think around 6 foot long - will be around £300-00 each. Very dark rich black grain, little sapwood. If that doesn't put you off PM me for pics! Otherwise they are for ebay!

Bar mount for the MS261 is the same as the larger Stihl saws - so if you 'pretend' to have a MS441 - all these bars will fit your saw and will have a 3/8" nose sprocket. Same method for selecting chains for this set up. Not sure what size you were after but I'd say 18" is the max for an MS261....

It's not all tree surgeons that use this forum though is it... it's home owners, timber millers, wood workers, carvers all sorts... And by labelling 'timid' tree surgeons you're saying that they are in some way weak or feeble and nervous. People take it to heart and instead of firing back just retire into the background.... have done x4 arb shows this year and that is what a fair few people have told me...

Very nice - really like the yew one - what to charge? Very hard to say... hard to see the scale in the pics but what would you need to get for one of them in order to think 'I will def make another?' When I first started making and selling stuff I never got what I wanted - usually around 50% to 60% - so started trying to make it to price the 'market' dictated which has worked well.

As above oak is a bugger - a lot of the stuff I cut at the shows this summer has already got a lot of surface checking i.e. little tears and splits... This can happen in 24 hours in hot weather - if it dries to fast in those early stages you end up wiping a lot of the value off it... After it has 5 months slow drying then it is much more tolerant to warm conditions and this then helps it dry fully. A lot of oak cut green in the summer may go straight from the saw mill and into oak frames and other places where green oak is needed and you're not fussed on whether it dries will or not.

Just to update this thread: The tree is coming down on the 22nd Oct and so the butt will be ready for milling. The owner Steve has said he is happy to pay £300-00 for the milling - a good job for someone so get in touch!

Just as a final comment on the thread my expenses when listing on ebay: Sale price of eg £40-00 Toby - who labels, measures, takes pictures and uploads gets 20% Vat is 20%. Ebay takes 10%. So that leaves £20-00. Paypal takes 3.4% call it £1-50 on this one. I lose £2-50 on the courier and packing materials. Andy locates board, packs and sends via FedEx £5-00. So that leaves £11-00 for me and that has to pay for the wood to be milled, dried, planed and stored - say £6-00 for that bit. Profit on a £40-00 board will be £5-00. Figures don't add up yet but will do if I can start shifting some volume.

You're saying it was a ridiculous price - as in too expensive. I'm disagreeing with and saying it's fair price. You started the thread - so I'm asking you why do you think it is too expensive?

Really? I would disagree 100% - more if I could. Why do you think it is a ridiculous price? What would you estimate his actual profit margin is? And what do you think a fair profit would be on what he is selling? I ask this as I have milled, sawn and dried timber for 8 years and have an ebay shop similar to his Timber sales, Sugihara bars for Stihl items in chainsawbars alaskanmill and treet store on eBay! I know my end profit is tiny at the moment but am hoping in continual persistence it can be turned into a viable business.

Sugihara bars look to be coming in on time. All pre orders will go out as soon as they are with us. Now reaching the final week where you can get 10% off and also your 10% arbtalk disc. Both will be disappearing on the 20th Oct. There will be no days leeway on this - it'll be a clear cut off. The 10% arbtalk discount will be being replaced by you putting in 'arbtalk' as the voucher code to get a free gift. The size of this will be according to you order and order size. Can't do a newsletter about this as only 20% of customers are arbtalkers and it would upset everyone else who has ordered and didn't get a discount. Have already bought in a lot of good stuff for the throw in deals for arbtalkers - I don't think you will be disappointed!

Yep no worrys but did you get that PM Simon? Just order the stones as per instructions... Royal Mail do deliver most of the time - but the trouble is the 2% to 3% they don't! Ref Fedex in the last year 100% delivery rate, no lost parcels. Royal Mail (who we were only using for 1/5th of deliveries) have lost 5 parcels... I had to pay for all of them... Bars and AV gloves all seem on track and fingers crossed will be delivered smoothly on the 20th or near to.... -
Great idea! Only advice from me - keep it clean looking as in nice looking pages without any clutter and keep it simple... I have a couple of in depth tree ID books and never open them as too much info in there!
