  1. A lot of people prefer to run 3/8" on a 550 and 560... Very easy - just change the rim from .325 to 3/8 and a new bar and chain... Not sure if oregon do a 3/8" sprocket (or any sprocket) for the 550 at the moment (they do for the 560...) You have the grunt there to use a larger chain. I have all the Sugi bars in the 3/8 version Products for the category: Special Offers Please note .375 = 3/8 Due to the way the selectors work I can't use the '/' sign in a lot of the product details.
  2. Just got back from doing a greenheart fence for me brother... Lot of work but happy with how it went. Took a long old time from start to finish - 5 days for two people including all the milling.
  3. Have another go at ordering... what computer/ipad etc are you using? Minimising bar sag - hmmm... I suppose have the saw set back a little from the mill... the weight as the powerhead sags down slightly pushes the middle of the bar up a little.
  4. Is this Mark? If so hello! Saw will get hot BUT rest it down the log - not balls out all the way start to finish - let it idle for 30 secs at around 1m intervals. When you take it out the cut at the end let it sit upright while still in the mill, a light rev to clear the sawdust from the bar, and let idle 1 minute.... Doing a long cut, hot weather, no stopping and flicking the saw off at the end without allowing some cool down time can cause problems.
  5. Nice work on the block and table - the block will crack but still look really good... There's a few ways to get them square quickly. Set up a ladder across x2 trestles - cut your blocks over long then a line up under the ladder. Now mill across all the tops. Then turnover the blocks, hang ladder from underneath the trestles to get the finished height. But the best way I found is one of these ORIGINAL HADDON LUMBERMAKER CHAINSAW MILL MADE IN USA WITH FREE HADDON JOINER | eBay which I bought 3 years ago and only just sorted out. Fixed to a block of wood and a guide. With it sideways to the log sweep the saw down and through and is really accurate and means you don't have to do so much lifting and handling.
  6. Been milling greenheart for two days using bandsaw.... the band has to be changed over every x2 cuts! This is after a full pressure wash. It is so dulling and so hard... ... and the stinking poisonous sawdust, splinters and heavy weight.... am so looking forward to oak again!
  7. You'll always get some flex going longer than 50"... I have the Stihl at the moment on the 090 and have had cannons in the past - I'd say there's not much to choose between the two... I have the 72" granberg bars which are very thick and flair out very wide in the middle but they ain't cheap! And you need a helper handle with roller on the far end (or another saw...) But if you wanted to go down that route I would throw in a handle with roller free with the bar.
  8. As above also if the board you mount your rails on is a little skewed, the bar is worn or a combination of all the above! It is a harder mill in all ways to get good results with when compared to the Alaskan.
  9. That's good work with just the mini mill for company A tough mill to use well and the posts look nice and square.
  10. Last few days chance to buy the new light type Sugi bars at 30%. Will be reducing this to 20% prob on sat/sun night. There has been a lot of take up on this offer but to get the max disc now is the last chance! If you missed the other thread read this here for how it all works http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsawbars/60591-hefty-pre-order-deals-next-round-sugihara-bars.html Also I am going to have to put up the price of Stihl bars and chains in the near future... and some of the lines in Stihl equipment I will no longer stock i.e. files mainly and a few other bits and pieces.... so as with the above a few days notice if you wish to buy at current prices. If you are an arbtalker you get a 10% discount. To get this sign up on the website first Chainsawbars ? chainsaw chains, chainsaw bars and chainsaw accessories top right corner then e-mail/PM me - I will set the 10% disc.
  11. Above has been sorted!
  12. When you regularly do 10-12 hour days a week you start programming yourself to work.... you may be knackered but you would rather keep working than take some time out - it's the road to being a workaholic. I don't tend to answer my phone or even take it with me after 6pm, don't have my phone set to pick up e-mails anymore - (as soon as I see that little sign in the inbox I can't not look in there )have rented an office rather than work from home. No longer return calls at the weekend. Turn the computer off so you're not jumping up everytime that little 'beep' goes to say another e-mail has come in. Force work back into work time.
  13. Good stuff - so satisfying is milling!
  14. That is cheap - do you not have anyone on here who would take a lorry load off you?
  15. So you are charging £55-00 to £60 a cube your way (equates to a 1/3 of his price)?
  16. I have some superb ones from Sugihara coming in - they work very well indeed - they are specifically for chainsaw work, strimming, and hedge trimmers. Rubber is sewn into the singers and palms. They are also super warm and machine washable. .... but - only come in a size medium and are on pre order here: Products for the category: Forestry equipment
  17. Only thing I've found ever worked is coconut water.... Re hydrates you even if water is not staying down!
  18. That's a mighty piece of wood! I find the 090 a much better saw on a long bar than the 880... easier to handle and just keeps on pulling!
  19. Great job Si - super original and I hope you get some good cash out of it.
  20. £4k is what is to buy direct - BUT - there will be 20% import vat on that, a bit of duty and around £400 approx of 'processing costs' (again +vat). You'd also want at least one spare blade so I would put the cost of the mill at £4,600-00+vat and you need to have the powerhead. I have a Peterson mill and with a dedicated 24 horse power 4 stroke engine it works reasonably hard at a 6" cut, works hard at an 8" cut.
  21. Full feature chain - new chain from Oregon. You can buy here Custom chain loops or here in the selectors Carving chains
  22. A few things with the mini mill: I know you can get more cutting length with the top of the bar (the actual other side of the bar) not not recommended as much more chance of the saw catching and jumping up. You loose around 6" of the bar 25" is the max length bar although people have used longer... You can bury the tip but like normal chainsawing work makes things harder... In the quarter sawing vid I have wedged the log up an inch and the tip just clears through and into this space It's dusty hard work!
  23. Thanks for the info. Yep a jcb with forks instead of front bucket would work... I'll give HE services a call.
