  1. Unless your into pole climbing all TCC events are non-spike, so getting practice running free round a tree is great, I hate spikes and usually have them sent up at the latter stages of a take down. They are helpful when you need them, but mostly uncomfortable and they restrict movement.
  2. 3 sets and some screws arrived today, approx 160 +vat, delivered. I have only used saturn since they started selling TW blades
  3. yes. it gives the usual habitat and edibility too, simple and a good start for less than a tenner. It misses some of the very obscure stuff that we rarely see.
  4. There's no shame in being able to do a TD with no spikes. Think of it as practice for the times your pruning and cant use them.
  5. 82? thats either very rare or a spelling mistake
  6. I went out to buy a Hi-Cap and came home with a van , boarded, shelves, water heater, full roof rack. seat in the rear. In all its been better than a pickup. There is room for one to sleep in the dry too. Every thing stays dry (until the doors started to leak)
  7. I have lots of nuts left over from various landrover mechanicals.
  8. I had a new student start today. The college he attends no longer teaches double ending the rope. As they did with a previous student 4 years ago . They now teach the use of a prussic loop rather than the 3 knot system as the basic method. The college frown upon the use of spliced ends rather they ask the students to tie a bowline and stopper each time. ( they forgot to say it needs to be untied before you pull the rope out the tree, with usual hilarious results) I did not mention the blakes hitch to him as I have no idea how to make one, nor do i want to know. It will be interesting to see what they show him in the future as I will get him to ask lots of questions.
  9. Its hard to find one book suited to Arb fungal ident. I have about 3 or 4. They have a variety of pics and diagrams so variation in the forms are covered. My fave basic book is a plain old DK fungi spotters book. If only I knew where I put it.
  10. @rse seat on the dragonfly is much wider than the one I added to the old butterfly. I thought I was gonna slide out of it today, the ally ring was too small (why?) , so that was swapped before i even got a foot off the ground. Not what I expected , but shiny new kit is, shiny new kit .
  11. Jonesie you have the wrong end of the stick ,my feet are size 10. Its got nothing to do with the toecaps. (except they are 1 inch too far back)
  12. I run a '93 110 form the environment agency. 200 engine with mucho clicks on the clock, I have just started adding 25% plain cooking oil to the fuel, it smells odd but goes ok . The 200 is a far more rugged engine than the 300. Its old and basic and keeps on going. My discovery has the 300 engine which is snappier, you are well advised to get one that has the revised timing belt arrangement.
  13. Surely if your that worried about speed you would buy a grab lorry. Now I have my 10" PTO set up nicely it makes skanky conifers a lot easier.
  14. here's one I chewed out a few years ago . Beech.
  15. I like the sound of falling trees as they fit the deck. The bigger the better, and more often than not its easier and safer to fell than climb. Thats up to your stringent council risk assessments though. That tree was ripe for felling , I would not choose any other treatment . I would like to know if several good specimens have been planted as replacements.
  16. Done the dragonfly thing, via post from Buxtons, I have had lots of gear from them in the past, its just arrived. Shame I'm off looking after the kids today.
  17. If you ask a rope access worker wether they should use a screwgate karabiner or a 3way they would reply screwgate. It all depends on the interpretation of the industry standards. Scafolders use huge snap gates, are they wrong for following their industry standards. The HSE do not make the rules they enforce the industry standards. http://www.rigg-access.com/wwwboard/album_showpage.php?pic_id=7&mode=next#TopPic check their pictures, no sign of a 3 way.
  18. I have the same problem looming in May. I have done the London thing a few times , there is so much to see and do. Edinburgh is great too. How about some foreign island retreat? Isle of wight, Anglesey. My wife keeps on about Paris . Last time I offered to take her there she didn't want to go, now its top of the list. Best of luck. ( just do what she wants, and smile)
  19. nice showroom jonesie, sadly i would need to amputate my toes to fit a size 8.
  20. I expect it was because like me I should have registered in april but only discovered I needed to register in september when I did my accounts. My debt was back dated to when my rolling turnover topped the 57k mark. ( this was a few years ago)
  21. In the UK, traders and businesses required to be registered for VAT purposes are issued with a VAT registration number by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in order to identify their registration. This number is not random or sequential, but actually includes a check digit1 to confirm that the number is genuine and correctly constructed. VAT numbers are issued in the form 123 4567 89. This however, is not a valid VAT number, so for the purposes of this Guide Entry the number 831 4958 16 will be used. The calculation The check digit calculation appears quite complex, but is in fact surprisingly simple. The first seven digits of the VAT number are assigned a multiplier beginning with eight for the first digit and descending to two for the seventh. 8 3 1 4 9 5 8 (The first seven digits) 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 (The multiplier) 64 21 06 20 36 15 16 (The results) After applying the multiplier, the results are totalled. 64+21+6+20+36+15+16 = 178 From the total, 97 is subtracted as many times as is necessary, until a negative, two digit number is produced. 178-97 = 81 81-97 = -16 This negative number becomes the check digit and relates to the last two digits of a valid VAT number. (1) Although it is actually two digits (source=borrowed)
  22. This will check if its valid but will not give the company name. http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/vieshome.do?selectedLanguage=EN
  23. pay rent on the land and give firewood for the house , the rent becomes a business expense, get it on paper though.
  24. take some car ramps and drive the front wheels up so the chip slides out better
  25. Thanks Pete, I have seen other releases of that info sheet. All the prosecutions should be regarded with interest. It is notable that 2 prosecutions simply involved the lack of signage and guarding to prevent public harm.
