  1. 2 types of tree surgeons. 1/ he /she who has came from nothing and knows the meaning of having nothing so will work long shifts and see's 15 min £50 jobs as a lot of money as most folk have to work a whole day to earn that. 2/ those who have it handed down and do it for fun. they love the tree surgeon look of landrovers, wearing stilhl tshirts out to the pub and hanging loads of slings, karibeaners, water bottles..you name it! from there harness.
  2. the work is undertaken for housing assocations..but i have done couple decent size site clearance contracts.
  3. thanks for advice rupe. Is there insurance companies that insure for tree works for non qualifed or does it just come under landscaping? Does having insurance bonds make a big difference when they choose who can tender?
  4. Yes, its worth it...but state the price difference on your website. e.g minimum call out charge etc.
  5. Hi Worcswuss. Yeah, thats exactly what i have been thinking. I have typed up letter to executive director and the situation. e.g it would be far more cost effective to deal directly with me. What about insurance bonds? i have been advised that i should take one out. Is this really needed. If it was another tree surgery comonay who i was subbing for it would be fine...its the fact that this company have nothing to do with arb work and taking my quotes and cut and pasting them as there own.
  6. I would like some advice on business choice here. I quote and undertake all tree work as a third party company for local authority. e.g i hand my quotes into another company who then hand them to council whith there percentage on top. I undertake all the work.- quoting the work, doing the work and giving my advice. The company who receive my quotes have nothing at all to do with arboriculture work as the are a security business and they do not have any qualifications, exp or tickets to undetake any tree work legally..thats why they use me. I have also called and asked them if they have relevant insurance as i am classed as a sub-contractor for them and they keep telling me that they will get back to me on this. what i don't understand is why they can tender for tree works for local authorities if they do not have any background in tree work or any insurances for arb work?? It annoys me as they really don't care about the work / trees and are just trying to make money any old way...but why does the council let them tender?? I have written a letter today to ask to tender myself and have made it clear that it will benefit the council to have insured and certified tree workers working for them rather than a company that isn't. Whats even stranger is that 2 off the other companies i have quoted against are even worse - one is a cleaning company!!! ...WHY DO THEY USE JACK OF ALL TRADES ( ROGUE TRADERS ) TO UNDERTAKE TREE WORK FOR THEM.????? Do they not care about british standards?
  7. Ok. e my re-search on this and understand what it is now. Any recommendations of company's that offer this type of service except banks. ?
  8. I have been making enquiries about tendering for Local authority work and have been told i need insurance bond? Not the most educated in Legal business requirments so could do with some advice. I Already have 5M P&B / 10M Employers and tools.
  9. looking to buy a 130 lady tipper myself? been searching hi and low over the net but can't seem to find 'the one!' any suggestions where i can look?
  10. They should have not let him go up the tree. dam the cat! If a tree surgeon did not reach it it is because it was most likely a dead tree and no other tree to tie into.
  11. Do you know anyone with gear and exp? Give the job to them and work with them for a higher day rate. e.g finders fee. or buy a van and mash it all doen in the back.?
  12. add up expensies. day rate and how many days then you will have your answer. you will get different answers on here because different areas and different sizes businesses. I would be looking at around £450 - £500. I day with 2men.
  13. mmm....man up people! used to work for a guy who always said...when men were men!. too many pussy's out there now. Simple as this.. there is A LOT of competition out there and if you can not keep up then get out of the game. I have taken on so many climber wannabees over the last few years...and maybe 5% of them were ok climbers. I think they should tell them in college before they start the course..that only 5% of them will make it as good climbers and the other 95% will be ok groundsman because thats what i see. Rough i know! but its true. doesn't matter about your age and circumstances..an employer is looking for someone to make there life easier and make them more profit..if a 18 year old with 3 years exp can do the job for less than a 35 year old then in a competitive industry the 18 year old will get the job. I would love to pay top dollar for exp guys...but i can't afford it as i must put this onto the price of jobs. too much Vodka tonight..but hope this makes sense.
  14. Thats profit i am talking about. 300 -400 a day. But you know someone funny...i quote cheaper than my rivals and win good perentage of work i quote..and still mke this profit per day? How i hear you say!...well 7.30am to 7pm is an average work day for me and i work like the hulk..but thats what needs to be done so can make a decent income and beat my competition. 400 is possible if we work a bit harder than your competitin.
  15. you know something...I would have ordered some from his site if we did not already have ours. oh well tungsten carbide ring will have too do.
  16. Thanks steve & Scottie. yeah the craftsmanship is outstanding...wish i had skills to do stuff like that. here is his website - Gallery & Customer Feedback for Sgian Dubhs, Kilt Accessories and Jewellery he does some cracking work
  17. yeah i think i would be doing the same. Oz, the states, and new zealand seems like the place to go. skills in tree work would also improve much faster than working in the uk due to more complex removals.
  18. I supplied the milled yew and these were made by Rab at Rainnea. Best man and father of the bride gifts. Yew handles and boxes, swedish steel blades with Tayside Amethyst pommel stones. Very happy with the final product.
  19. I personally believe we moan way to much. all the negative energy spent typing and moaning..you could have done something positive for your company a in the same time. We all think we have it hard..but we don't!! life is easy for british citizens. I was recently in poland and was talking to my girlfriends grandfather. ( wife to be on 2nd june ).. They were telling me after the war they had to walk around with straw stuffed in newspapers for shoes. Nothing got wasted...they would brew chicken **** for vodka and they had no clothes as the germans took everything, they also all lost a lot of weight because food was so scarce. Life wa tough for them, life is tough for many aficans, life was tough after the war, Life has been about survival for as long as humans have been on the planet. ....and here we are complaining on a forum..on our laptops, iphones or ipads how hard life it. Get a grip of yourselfs...you want business to come and make a better living? Work harder.
  20. Came across wrong there. What i was meaning to say - If you run a chipper, truck with all the usual overheads then going out to worka day with all that gear for anything less than £300 a day means that you will just be working every year to cover costs and a bit for profit. Ideally for business growth you need to make good profit and invest it back into the business. Just my opinion. Like i said i sometimes go out and do £100 jobs by myself..but i won't take the chipper out for that and it will be a couple hrs work at most.
  21. If you run a business with truck, chipper and 1 groundsman ( which a lot of guys do ) then you should be earning at least!! 300 - 400 a day after expensies per day. Otherwise you are just digging yourself into a big whole..and will never have business growth. My mother has been on 800 a month for years working full-time...i earn that usually in 2 days...sometime 1 day. When i go out and do jobs worth £100 quid now and then by myself i don't complain..because i know there is someone out there struggling much more than myself.
  22. Agree with you. it ain't that bad. average day rate i reckon is around 300 to 400 profit. So most of us prob make more in 3 days than the average working man does in a month...and when we are working...its all fun , games and fresh air. tree work is an undervalued industry and at the same time tree workers overvalue them selfs.
  23. Big balls fell that was. Must have had your wheetabix that morning.
