  1. Or just use a chain,it dosn't stretch and never wears out. And who needs knots since it has a handy hook on one end.
  2. Mike Hill

    UK vs Nz

    Bryce still own that outfit?
  3. I recomend just calling a dozen companies in Berlin, have a look in their version of the yellow pages. You'll find it online. Going straight over to a job has its advantages, but if the company turns out to be not to your liking then if they got you your accomadation then things get difficult. Don't forget about Norway,Sweden,Danmark,Canada etc.I don't know what the pay is like in Germany these days, but you don't seem to hear of many folk going to work a season there like you did ten years ago.
  4. I would like to see a maintainance section, where one subject could be delt with completley on one issue like checking and changing wheel bearings. All the way to how to rebuild a saw over say four or five issues.Just sharing and showing knowledge that could take years to pick up.
  5. Thats true,if your not mechanically inclined then think seriously about getting a Mog.I've had mine one month and had to do a fair few things to it.Thankfully nothing major but as they differ in so many ways to a normal truck that I think its best to have a specific need for one,ie tight acess or cross country travel. We have done a couple of jobs that would have been impossible with a nomal 4x4 tip truck, unless you had taken a dozer in there and done some bladework to the ruts and rocks we had to get over/around. I'd love to uprate the HP on my U1000,but after last weeks "Bog a Mog" fiasco,I'm putting the money towards a winch!
  6. Try putting the spare tyre on the bonnet. Its out of the way and handy for putting slings and large shackles in when off roading.Just remember to drill through one of the bolts and put a wee padlock on it,or someone might have it away.
  7. I agree with the idea of the turn table chipper.Weight distribution is not such a problem if it is a single axel model if it has a foot that slides down at the rear to stabilise the machine if its swiveled once uncoupled. I wrote off a brand new Schiesinger early last year when the locking mechanisim on the turntable failed as I went around a corner, the machine began to slew around violently before it broke off the tow hitch and rolled down the road. One of the steel tabs on one side of the hole the locking pin engaged had a bad weld and had fallen off. This allowed the pin to ride up and with momentum fight the downward pressure of the locking mechanisim and around and around she went.Thankfully it didn't hit any cars. Double luck that I had hired it for the day!
  8. Thats the thing, its illeagle to own a firearm for the purpose of self defence in the UK. It is also illeagle to own a Knife or Bat for the same purpose. Both knives and bats have other purposes than to kill or injure people and the key words here are,Use and Misuse. Anyone who hurts or threatens somonewith an air rife or knife is misusing it,they should be and always have been delt with by the law.Air rifles are designed either to shoot Vermin or Targets, not humans.Banning the sale of air rifles isn't the answer,as banning handguns did nothing to stop gun crime in the UK as anyone who misuses either is a criminal by way of misuse.
  9. At the end of the season in Ak we might be climbing in -20c.I'd wear two pair of long johns,socksX2,couple of thermal tops, polar fleece over puffer jacket. And a Helmet liner with neck flap and ear plugs. I'd wear the snow boots on the ground but suffer wearing Wesco boots in the trees, oh and somtimes wear a neoprene face mask if there was wind. Wasn't much fun to be honest but like I said it was the end of the season
  10. Three words:LATEX CAT SUIT Waterproof, flexable, durable and daring. Why they havn't caught on is anyones guess? Oh,thats it,not chainsaw proof.
  11. Good idea! Hand in your air rifles and get a free SA80! Then your armed forces can buy propper Rifles. Signed
  12. YES! However I won't take part, due to my bogging prowess and ability to ignore suggestions of where to drive. Best to let the newbies get under it and dig out the chassis. With Spoons.
  13. Yeah you guys can come over!I promise to awe you with my amazing ability to get any kind of vehicle stuck. Wheels/Tracks/Rollers you name it,I can bog it! As a consequence my portfolio of recover techniques and experiance is vast!lol
  14. That ring must be fitted on the shaft if they are going to last any lenght of time. As was said above a wooden Maul is best, the kind I use has two steel rings around the head.I soak it in Diesel,it makes the wood swell and they last alot longer. Makes the Maul heavier as well.
  15. An old fella told me "son you'll get sawdust in your blood and never get it out" He gave me my first saw.
  16. Or leave an upturned open Umbrella under it over night and go out on the Beers.
  17. I think meeting up is a great idea,we could do it here in Norway after I have felled loads of trees and everyone could have races with the brush and logs to see who can clean it all up the fastest! Seriously,I'll come over, what about late March?
  18. That does look smart Tockmal. Wrist flexion is also good for improving grip, sit upright in a chair and place your forearms on your thighs with your palms facing up.Grip a weighted bar/truck axle/pipe with cinder blocks on each end and bend your knuckles toward the floor, then toward the ceiling. "Pop eye" forearms in no time!

    Whaaat!

Exactly, double amputee wheelchair users. As use by able bodied people would mean loosing their feet.
  20. Average 200 wet days a year here in Bergen,or about 88" of rain per year. Its actually unusual if it isn't raining. Does make dragging brush easier though, less friction!
  21. Thats quite alright,I never "spike" any trees I'm pruning.Instead I wear "pruning aides" strapped to my feet and calves, upon decending the Tree I apply "pruing balm" aka Brown Boot pollish to the the "pruning aid" marks. This is after I have painted all my cuts ofcourse.
  22. Yes in Alaska "you don't loose your girlfreind, you just loose your turn"
  23. Actually mate your wrong Everything has to be barged/flown in from the lower 48.That adds freight charges that don't apply in the lower 48,remember there is less than a million people in all of Alaska consuming products that have to cross a vast country (Canada) before getting to Alaska. On top of that,as its mostly guys up there, appartments are very expensive $650 pm plus bills and up from there. The company advertising is in Anchorage, and that because of the Oil money is one expensive town. Don't get me wrong,Alaska is one great place, but the wages might sound good, good untill your there.
  24. I worked up in Alaska for three seasons, the pay for climbers is absolute pants compared to what other skilled trades make. The work is twice as hard as Europe (long long days)and the groundies half as skilled. Most trades there make $25 to $45 bucks an hour, you'll be lucky to get $25.No benefits,no insurance except workmans comp. The state is stunning but you're better off in Europe saving your money for a holiday there.imo
