1. After a bit of hunting around looking for a reasonably priced, well made and built to last netting tray we decided to make our own. Im planning to start selling them but just wondered what you guys thought? Would be grateful of any comments. Box section is 50mm x 50mm. 3 legged base so very stable on uneven ground. Fully galvanised. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
2. We had some brochures printed a while back and hand them out mainly when quoting work. We found that we covered such a range of tasks covering treework and landscaping that you can soon sound like the jack of all trades. Put it all in a nice brochure with pictures and people get a better understanding of what you offer. It has generated a lot of business for us. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
3. We take card payments and have done for a couple of years now. We have a portable machine through streamline which was processed through Cardsave which has now changed to Worldpay. I have been getting charged a PCI DSS non compliance fee of £10 per month. When trying to register and comply I found the terms and conditions you are signing to are so irrelevant and some impossible for a UK based business as it has clearly been written for the states. When I phoned up to complain about this I was simply told you have to sign it or continue to get fined. Has anyone else has this issue? I would happily leave Worldpay because of this and try a new method of taking card payments if anyone has any suggestions. Jay Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
4. What sort of budget do you have. Sometimes it can be cheaper to buy a PTO machine and a cheap old tractor that will just run the PTO if nothing else than to restrict your search to self powered machines. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
5. Had this exact problem the other week! It was repaired on warranty but still shouldn't happen. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
6. I think that's a fair figure. This is with 2 guys. One never leaves the joy stick if the machine though. And the other has to load the deck neatly! And keep on top of the saw dust etc. if you can keep a constant flow of timber into the machine you can soon eat through it. However like you say Ben if its small diameter it can take an hour to do 1 cube. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
7. Earlier this year I changed my 200t for a 540xp. It was great for a week or so but now still only a few months old it seems to be deteriorating very quickly. It has already been back on warranty work and doesn't seem to rev up properly. It sounds more like its playing a tune when you run it full throttle than rev up to a constant speed. Also seems that when you get down to half a tank it won't run on its side. Great when bring down the trunk wood! Has anyone else had these problems? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
8. I reckon we can turn out 10 cube an hour fairly comfortably with our 400 joy with a log deck and avant loading. If its big timber splitting 8 ways I reckon we can get nearer 13 an hour. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
9. I'm with EE and was paying £70 a month for iPhone with the extras bits. I'm due an upgrade but I don't want to be stuck with an iPhone 5 for 2 years when there will probably be a newer one released in oct. they have now put me on a £20 sim only and use the same phone. 2000 mins 2gb I think and unlimited text. I can then change it when the new ones out. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
10. Certainly is the tree shear is great. We used it when reducing hedges made the job so easy. Carry the whole top straight to the chipper! Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
11. Hire an avant with a tree shear and log grab!! Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
12. I do the same over harvest and get £12 per hour. No training but I already have telehandler ticket and First aid at work. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
13. So I understand there is a common problem with the canter which seems to constantly put it into limp home mode and when plugged in it shows as being a fuel system problem. Our canter started playing up a few months ago and was in out of the garage constantly going into limp home mode and cutting out. After pretty much replacing the whole fuel system, pump, filters, injectors, sensors it still did it. After hearing several horror stories of vans that have been off the road for 18 months with the problem and not even the dealers knowing how to fix it we though it was end of the road for it. However we managed to find a garage who stuck with it and wasn't going to give up and after a few mods she is now good as new. Hope this helps a few! Jay
14. We have been asked to put on a display at a schools fair next week. There is 4000 primary school kids coming and the day is focusing on agriculture and the environment. We have a large mature Oak which we can climb and set up some rigging kit. We are also hoping to touch a bit on tree biology. Has anyone else done stuff like this? Would be grateful of any ideas people may have as to how to keep them interested! Cheers Jay
15. Don't go in cheap!! If someone is genuine they will pay good money for a good service. It also drives the price down for everyone by going in cheap. Also sell your self and your business. Make them confident you understand the industry and the job. People do understand that price isn't everything.
16. we have a similiar set up but it uses radios which makes them a bit of a pain with wire and having to have a radio on you. Do these not require any radio? Make a job so much easier though. everyone knows what is going on and saves so much time not waiting for people to come back round from chipping up. They are great when rigging.
17. I am looking to buy 2 new saws to fill in between a ms260 and an ms660. I recently changed my 200t for a T540xp and love it. This has got me thinking about changing to Husky from stihl. Would be grateful for any recommendations. Also does anyone else find the T540xp goes cold quickly. My 200t would only ever need the choke for the first start of the day and would start pretty much first pull after that. I do find the the 540 needs the choke after 10mins or so. Does this just need a tune? Cheers Jay

Apologies if it was an old post but I have just read your thread about changing your processor. We have recently agreed a dealership with Kilworth to supply Tajfun processors. Were are you based in the country? We are in Suffolk covering East Anglia. If you are still looking at machines I would be more than happy to come and provide a demo of a processor and also log deck should this be of interest to you.

19. we also use freeagent. Is easy to use and does everything I need it to. Admittedly I dont use it to its full potential but it does all your VAT and it provides you lots of nice graphs to looks at.
20. Go for it. I have always been self employed in the tree game since 16. Worked for several different people and learned alot. I did 2 years at college and then a year for with someone else before slowly doing more and more of my own work. Really got going when I was 20 along with my brother who was 22 and a trained landscaper. We have now been going 4 years doing tree and landscping work. We even currently building a cart lodge which we have never attempted before but was asked to do it by a existing customer following a gazbo we built for him. We obviously did something right! We now often run 2 gangs and have built up a fairly large collection of kit and machinery and a constantly busy diary! It can be done but trust me it takes a hell of a lot of time and even more hard work!
21. Basically our kit is all kept at a seperate yard to our logs. Its a pain when you just want to go and deliver a few logs and you then have to get the trailer out, load the avant, then go back to the other yard drop the trailer and avant off and then go an deliver. We also end up doing alot of multi drop deliveries and so would make it easier just to pull off a bag. We will still do loose loads and and hoping to get some partitions on the vans.
22. Do you have a website? It just comes up with YMCA in the search and I think we could be off the mark!
23. I havent had chance to try it yet but we are planning to put a pressure guage on the hydro tipper. Put 1 ton in the back tip it up a bit and read the pressure! the theory should work and I know of people who had done similar on agri trailers. In practice it will probably be inaccurate!
24. Just after recommendations of the best place to purchase vented log bags and 1m cube ideally not 1 ton. Just trying to find easier ways of handling drying and delivering. Would be grateful of any thoughts. Jay
25. £12895 + VAT list price off the top of my head
