  1. if you were working for/with me or on some of the utility co's res's I cover you would need a self inflating life jacket, as part of my and their risk assesments, even the fishermen on most res's now have to have life jackets, bouyancy aids are only permissible in water sports because your likely to enter/get covered in water as a matter of course not trying to be argumentative, but like as you say its probably a personal preference thing in your case, and if your R/A and site owner is ok with it, then their is no problem
  2. fair enough, i find bouyancy aids for the most part a pain to big and bulk, i wear a self inflating for most of my work on rivers, as its nice and compact and doesnt restrict my movement to much, and it doesnt rely on me having to pull the toggle like a manual one if something goes wrong and i end up in the water knocked out or unable to pull the toggle for any reason, the other thing is i am often jumping in and out of my truck a lot during the course of a day anyway doing other river conservation work so its just as easy to keep something on that i can wear whilst driving as well, EDIT: also dont mistake bouyancy aid and life jacket classification, to be rated as a life jacket it has to be capable of turning you face up in the water, so they must have 150kn of bouyancy
  3. ok cheers, i thought bike batteries were a different terminal type like the ones on my quad? do they have the same terminals as a car battery then?
  4. I need a battery for my small entec chippit chipper, that i am rebuilding, the only one i can find online the right size to fit in the battery compartment is £80 as its a sealed battery designed for a mazda, i have used several online battery searches and they all come back with this battery the dimensions required are maximum 200mmx150mmx190mm so the only battery within that size with the correct terminal layout is a 12v31m Westco battery, just wondered if anyone else had any ideas or thoughts, or knew what battery they had on their smaller older entecs, as 80notes for a small battery seems a bit steep , my defender ones are cheaper than that Cheers Charlie or should i just stop being a tightwad
  5. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/8605-346xp-old-style-exhuast-mod.html not tidy but serves the purpose http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/1309-anyone-using-modded-saws.html
  6. winch is very handy so you can fell back up the bank even when the trees are over the water, especially on small stuff you can fell it then winch it up the bank and process it on nice solid ground, bio oil as well! and be prepared to cry if you slip and drop your saw
  7. BBC iPlayer - BBC Three - Tuesday 30th (Today) here you go its on iplayer
  8. self inflating life jacket from lifejackets.co.uk hi-viz throw line on the bank, if wearing waders, either thigh-highs not belted up or neoprene if using chest waders, the thigh ones you can kick off, the neoprenes are bouyant so wont drag you under, avoid cheap nylon chesties as if you fall in they will pull you down once full of water if using a boat it needs to be the flat bottomed metal punt type, so you cant puncture it! and more stabile to work in, but this isnt advisible if they are small dia stuff any chance of using a pole saw, i have used my ht75 with the head under water, just wd-40 it well once your finished
  9. a bit of a long shot, are you using fresh fuel mix? and have you retuned the saw since the rebuild
  10. i think the fact there is only one importer now means prices will only go up as they did when aao took over sole supply
  11. since Anglo american took over supply several of my dealers struggled to sort supply, was much easier when husky were doing it, basically you need to get one of your suppliers to set up an account with Anglo american then there shouldnt be a big problem if you commit to using it, although i think there may be a minimum purchase of £200 wort of fuel, so they cant order one or two 5ltr containers at a time, my local dealer stocks it as several large estates and organisations round here use it so i can normally drop in to get some the only downside i really have is that i find the exhuasts rusting quicker when using it, i assume due to the lack of unburnt oil exiting the saw,
  12. yes i use it, i pay about 2.2x the cost of petrol, i work on sensitive sites and in rivers, therefore i use the best available products, i also use stihl bioplus, i also like the fact that it doesnt stink my truck and workshop up of normal 2stroke mix, and when working in confined spaces like ditchs and hedge rows i dont feel rough at the end of the day what is SSSA, do you mean SSSI?
  13. oh you environmental heathen you should be felling more trees into rivers, its the future of flood alleviation
  14. from a conversation we had, when you were putting me off buying a 65hp turbo version: looks sweet set up mate, very jealous
  15. is that a holder?
  16. http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/timbervolume.pdf/$FILE/timbervolume.pdf you will need some details of the timber, like average height, diameter and density of trees, but it should give you a ball park figure
  17. I dont know i hav e use a few and just dont like the platform, not as quick and easy to use as windows mobile, but i suspect if you were using facebook and twitter a lot they would be fine, but for writing docs etc they were not that quick
  18. ok costs are as follows the first one is £380 the next two are £180 and the fourth one is £150 Charlie
  19. its running android though, and i find android a bit rubbish for a working tool

  21. I did wonder as i have a few mates with iphones that havent complained, but i like the fact that i can have my phone on me and maybe only charge it every few days, I use a local shop that is impartial on sales, and will get grey imports etc, so they dont have sales targets but, it does mean that if i get a problem i can nip in and they sort it out then and there or will loan a phone if something plays up, I thought they bought out a new iphone at the end of last year? I should also mention that i have been using htc's for the last 4+ years and have found them to be exceptionally robust, even out lasting my old ruggedised nokia
  22. Upgrade time, just wondered if anyone was using one of these, the shop steered me away from the Iphone due to pathetic battery standby length in the real world, basically they said they were fine if you worked in an office and could have it sat on a charge most of the time, the other option is one of the blackberry's but the only one i like the look of is the storm 2 and that doesnt look as user friendly as my trust old htc tytnII, at the minute it looks like the touch pro 2 is the best option as its still windows mobile pro based and not on andriod, which i have had a play on and dont like, but it means i will have to get a business account with orange, which may put my broadband up any feedback from users would be appreciated essential features are GPS and WiFi, and ideally a full qwerty keyboard, incase i have missed any models, oh and it will be on orange
  23. should think so if you had come from walking around in your yard was said stove fitter from a firm in uttoxeter? who happen to sell small boxes of kiln dried logs?
  24. blimey its all a bit technical, i light a fire lighter, put that on the grate, then chuck a decent handful of kindling onto the fire lighter and then after about 5mins put some logs on to it, its not rocket science if your sticks and logs are dry this seems to work well on both my log burners and rayburn, and i only have this for heating and hot water, it would be a real pain if i had to faff about with making nice little piles of material everytime i wanted to light one, fire was one of the greatest developments man has ever made, and we seem to be over complicating a bit much, also i have heard that sitting by the fire and rubbing the bits of kindling together should make a fire eventually, and if it doesnt at least it will keep you warm and if all else fails, chuck some two stroke on it
  25. parcelforce, as it should then be tranfered to USPS once in the states, this should be the cheapest method, or UPS if you want it to stay with one courier for more security and ease of tracking (once a parcelforce parcel leaves the uk you cant track it, the sender will have to chase and hound usps about it!)
