  1. From what I remember from 17 years of overheads starting in the early 80's, some rural areas still had 2, 3, 4 wire overheads along streets/roads and relatively few underground services. Phone lines were, by then, single wire or cable, insulated that didn't need the ceramic insulation or "pots" to carry them. Although, I do recall posts with multiple cross arms and pots carrying copper cables along the side of railway tracks back then. Along a rural road, the GPO/PO still attached the cables to LV Poles but as said, these were insulated and didn't require pots.... Having said that, I do remember an 11kva set up in very rural Leicestershire that had the original wooden cross arms on the posts!
  2. From back in the day of low voltage overheads
  3. Engine power and PTO power can be different. We say 55 - 100 at the shaft is good as we have a rotation changing gearbox. But that is at 540speed. Back in the day, I had an 8" GreenMech on my U1000 Unimog which was tuned to 125hp at the engine which gave ample enough HP when run at 1000speed, ignoring the dash. It was quieter, used less diesel, produced less smoke etc.
  4. Google Chipper Hire South West. Col may be able to help - he is Exeter way.
  5. Intrigued by the twin blade Toro, are they the only units on the market? I don't recall any other makes. Where are Kazz made?
  6. Tad harsh and I not religious in any way. It is more to do with attitude and aptitude that makes a good employee! Sitting in the bog on YouTube on the phone you should have left in the locker, standing talking when you should be working or just ambling about pretending to be lost are not excusable at any level. If someone has to/likes to say a few things to their god at odd times in the day and is a good employee, then let them have those few minutes as long as it generally doesn't upset the flow of graft!
  7. I got a mate who is a rep for Etesia, they have always impressed me too. Once saw an old rep put a brick end on the floor and smash it to dust. Deck survived with a few scars but it still cut. Think they were Kawasaki engines and the crank survived too! Council buy them by the dozen which is a marker on quality and strength too.
  8. Brilliant! Thanks for that......just couldn't get it in the grey matter!
  9. Anyone remember that webpage that would convert an ordinary page into a Snoop Dog shizzle speak?
  10. The one armed chap can be quoted as saying, "I lost an arm, so what, there's work to be done and targets met!". The other lazy bustards would rather sit about and get flat rate rather than pick rate bonus, attendance bonus and be a part of 'the team.
  11. My partner was in a distribution job, through an agency, when the DC asked her to go full time with them, she agreed and found out that she had to be 'brought'! The agency had lost a valuable asset for which they got more money than she did! She is now a team leader, managing a shift crew, half are agency staff and not worth anything.....A one armed, white, British Male has 100% attendance and 105% pick rate while a Muslim from 20 miles away who has to be bused in, isn't 42% pick rate, 3 x 40min toilet breaks, gets lost, cannot read English well and gets the same money... boils my pish!
  12. Honda cost a fair amount and usually for a reason. I would apply 'you get what you pay for ' in the circumstances. Look after it, wash the deck out, do not store fuel in it a d it maybecome a heirloom! List it in your will...
  13. I don't recall the article saying it was team rate or per man? If that is team rate then they'll underpriced the value if it is per man then at they are good capitalists!
  14. An article in the trade press shows that a South Wales local authority have discovered that they have been overcharged on the usual day rate by subbies and have unwittingly paid these and for other service in the Arb sector. Subbies charged the higher rate of £395 instead of the lower rate. Who signed off the invoices and I hope that rate is per person! If it was per team then fair play to them for doing it!
  15. I'd rather it wasn't stolen in the first instance tbh. As a previous post said, chains, wire ropes, hitch locks and covers, wheel clamping and so on might be a faff to fit. But, the chances are that it will be there in the morning.
  16. Many years ago, a client had to attend a safety briefing held by the main contractor of an OHL Contract. Amongst the briefs was a short subject on the subject of going to the loo in the absence of a local public loo, garage or suitable supermarket. After the keynote speaker had highlighted the subject of letting other team members know what and where etc, waterless hand cleaner, disposal blah blah blah. Someone asked for the procedure if there was a lady on the team? The sudden consternation, realisation and confusion was epic to see! Women's doings in an Arb environment had overcome their commonsense! On another note....how do you tell the front from the back of a tree? "Some cuffer's took a dump behind this on!"
  17. Got a lift in a D3 back from the pub the other night, the dash showed a fault with the ebrake and Park assist. I commented that my own D4 had Park assist issues too but I felt the car was good but that I might change it for a more reliable unit. The driver commented that for the previous 375,000 miles, it had had nothing but routine servicing and a set of bushes!!!
  18. An Air compressor is one of the best pieces of kit to have in the workshop! Not only for cleaning radiators but cleaning rubbish off of anything! Including sawdust off of yourself, but take care around cuts and the face.....Good post Mick......
  19. Ideally, make a long nozzle out of old brake pipe, put a short 90 degree bend in the end, and (if the fan pulls) blow from the engine side outwards. If there is a removable mesh screen, take this out first!
  20. I had a fright in my Dad's brand new Volvo 340 back in the early 80's. They were flying out of Heathrow early one Saturday, asked me to drop them off. Lovely summers dawn morning, good tunes on a fancy stereo, new car, sunroof open etc. Came hooning up the Great North Road at a lick, realising too late that the slip road was there, jumped on the brakes with a load of lefthand down and went broadside to broadside to broadside up the slip. This two week old car launched up the kerb to 360 up the grass with mud/soil/stones and grass flying! Got out shaking, light a Marlboro, a check all four wheels were still attached and drove it straight into the garage! It got thoroughly washed and polished! My younger sister found out and snitched! Six years later, I brought it off him and then he told me he knew all about my adventure and the thought of my panic, embarrassment and efforts to check it out and clean it made him chuckle!
  21. 1725 Hunter? Holby tuned engine if I recall right, rare in those days too! Modern cars don't have design flaws, they just cussed to working! Changing the alternator on my D4 was best part of two days! They (modern cars) are just not designed for DIY repairs! You are right about Renault Stewart, half a day to change a light bulb sounds right!
  22. My 1st was a MK2 Cortina 1600E, with Mexico decals on the side. 2nd was a 65 Beetle changed from 6v to 12v and fitted twin carb/twin port 1600 engine driving Pirelli P6 Zero on banded rims! 3rd was a MK2 RS2000 which had been a tarmac rally car but had standard engine by then. TEC300M got sold for £850 in 1985 with a dented front wing, done on the day the lad came to view it! 4th was a Lancia HPE, twin cam 2ltr and was lively but rusty!
  23. That ram geometry might get to a steep tip which ensures that compacted chip exits quickly, but, it would be pushing forward before it starts to push up! Awful lot of strain on the fabrications and pivots, you did well to avoid it. If you are doing mainly urban work, a 4x4 is unnecessary- you did well with the tipper!
  24. This vintage compressor is free to anyone who wants to collect it from close to the M1 in North Leicestershire. It was working when I got it and I used the motor on another compressor with a huge tank. To be honest, you can have both if you want!
  25. Best wishes to his family. Tragic loss locally, when we drove past each other, we had a wave, thumbs up etc, saw him last in the Mog at Hathern Turn. Never knew about the archery!
