  1. The point i was trying to make wasn't what looks more natural but does the extra creativity and a more natural looking cut create any better wildlife habitat? Jamie
  2. does the shape of it really matter. what you posted was definitely aesthetic from a anthropocentric viewpoint. does that make a blind bit of differnce to your average saproxylic organisim? I just cut and make a very rough cut with a grid pattern. My thinking is that this would provide enough areas of shelter to create some microclimates. We did it in a park where they were also removing deadwood. seems a bit pointless in this instance to me. Jamie
  3. I wasted a LOT of rope learning to splice. I have boxes full of wasted splices i can send you some if your want Jamie
  4. the bury was 2 inches and the taper down was 1.5 inches. Jamie
  5. I dont climb with any heat shrink on my splices. I've whipped tons of ropes and i'm yet to have any that have been abraided, worked loose or fallen out. If you're worried leccy tape is your best bet. Jamie

    Friction cord

I dont like the inclusion of Dyneema/spectra in teh core. Dyneema has an incredibly low melting point. Jamie
  7. Just to let you know i got a sample of that tenex tec cord with my super short splice tested to destruction by a company who has the Royal Navy splicing contract (they deal with ropes with an MBS of up to 560 metric ton). The MBS of 9mm tenex tec is 2,500kgs, the MBS for their recommended splice is 2,200kgs. My splice broke at 2,900kgs just at the end of the taper. I aim to get more broken to create an average but i can forsee it being equaly high. As for the whipping. The splice is locked at the base of the eye so it could be argued that the whipping is almost redundant. To be on the safe side i did whip it. I used a whiplock so that it is easy to inspect. If you want to shrink wrap it go ahead. I've found whipping to be quite durable. Jamie
  8. I only spliced the tenex in that pic. I've been playing around with the whipping more and i've come up with a far superior whiplock to yales instructions. just so you know i use whiplocks as opposed to lock stitches as they are easier to inspect. Jamie
  9. i'm thinking it looks good. i've heard reports of petzl harnesses being a bit uncomfy in the past but it looks nicely thought out. Jamie
  10. We were working in town. deadwooding in a major pedestrian street. two lassies walked past the signs, ducked under the barrier tape, past the tractor, the groundies never saw them, they were busy tidying my mess up. then the two lassies stopped when the walked into the platform, the big blue platform... they got a telling off. Jamie
  11. not yet, i figured 22.55 might be a wee bit late to give them a call. Jamie

    My saturday

I got some blisters the other week doing some 16 strand. I altered my technique slightly and no more blisters. it was the callusoses on my palms that blistered. Jamie
  13. after using the rear gear loops to hang my saw on my butterfly2 and they failed. doh. i spliced up some 9mm beeline then attached a teardrop mallion midline and hung it off my harness with 2 mallions. plently strong Jamie
  14. when the sproket fails. lol Jamie
  15. Anyone know of people who would specialise in this kind of insurance. i'm sure someone must. Cheers Jamie

  21. made some of these babies on saturday. Overall i made 12 splcies over a 6 hour period. every one was different and none were standard. my rope guide a 24" tenex eye eye sling the last one is a strop that has been hung on the basket of a platform. (round my part the world is squint just like in my picture) Jamie
  22. Wind blow is fun but you have to have your wits about you. I've heard so many stories of root plates falling and crushing people.....not good. Leave it to someone who knows. Jamie
