  1. don't be lured by the fancy advertising just pulleys with rounded edges
  2. we were using quite short 13mm line for awhile, then the company owner went out and built this huge 70m 20mm line. we all hate it, complete overkill. we reckon he got it off some barge ship
  3. hold it i'm wrong knew i should have checked the internet first 1000kg is 10KN. at least i know now.
  4. correct me if i'm wrong(and i have a habit of being so), there's a thousand newtons in kilo newton. is a KN a metric tonne. i thought i remember those little slings being rated at 2000N. i need to look again. thats why i thought he was out by a decimal point. some clarification would be appreciated.
  5. the answer to your original formula was 744.8N so that would make it 0.7448 kn. all your gear would explode with forces of 7kn, wouldn't it?
  6. In the second second, the object has an average velocity of 15 m/sec (beginning 10m/sec, final 20 m/sec) so the distance covered is 15m. From the beginning the distance covered is 20 m. For the third second, the average velocity is 25 m/sec (beginning at 20 m/sec and final at 30 m/sec) for a distance covered of 25 m. Or from the start, 5 m + 15 m + 25m = 45 m approx. so in hind sight detritus 21 deserves all prizes. and we can now enter the second stage of the game
  7. damn it i don't get any fish, i'll have to aim for second prize. maybe that teddy bear in the corner
  8. i thought we did, not saying i got it right because i should really be applying a formula to my stab in the dark. so come on then quit dangiling a carrot on a stick in front of us and tell us. i do i have to go home and dig out my old school physics book
  9. all my talk of being fit and taking care of myself yesterday... now i accidently swung into a trunk and done something to my knee. i might just spend the evening on the couch sympathy fishing
  10. i'm calculating it at 58.86 metres. if the acceleration of fall due to gravity is directly proportional to the time it takes until terminal velocity is reached. gravity @ 9.81 the first second the object has travelled 9.81 m the 2nd second it travels 19.62 m and the 3rd second it travels 29.43 add all these seperate amounts up and you get 58.86 m = 193ft
  11. i reckon your idea wins peter, the simplier the better, always. especially as its a system that bases itself on time efficiency. the original diagram would need setting up once at the desired work point plus need dismantiling once finished. have to be a huge tree to make all this worth while
  12. wasn't martyn1`the guy complaining about sore knees a few months back. i've been training for ten years now to optimise my climbing, still slight in build though but fit and in proportion. done lots of right and wrong things, but learnt whats right for me. i disagree with master blaster 90 mins is not over training. especially if you only go 2-3 times a week. no point body building as your body returns to its preferred shape quite quickly after time away from the gym, leaving you with knackered joints. still must push yourself in the gym. variety is the key. it is important to include cardio into your work out as most of the time work or recreational walking doesn't raise your heart to a high enough level to train it(cardio is what you seem to notice more so over weight training, for heightened energy levels throughout the day). and if time is an issue do super sets where you do situps or something during rest periods between reps. you can do a 8 minute yoga routine in the morning at home, for the core the back and the rest. you don't have to go to classes. protein shakes are the quickest and simplest way of delivering your body what it needs. rather than hunting in the fridge for sugary and fatty stuff for what your body desires. and finally if your peckish between breaks snack on nuts. simple and full of goodness. phew what a rant
  13. i think they actually make your job safer, and obviously easier. especially dead trees where you don't really want to put your rope through a fork. and especially when working on stems. even if you have your rope below your side strop and you cut your side strop you still might fall to the ground. i've had two friends who've fallen off stems in the last year one broke his back(walking fine again now) the other just got grazed horribly. both because they just came down off too small a stub around the trunk
  14. i was with stephen on that one. i've heard of it and have it shown to me but could never see when you'd use it. there's one better on that system, if you have the old style rope guide(the one made of rope rather than strapping). you just turn your rope guide into a kleimheist with your climbing line already set up through your rope guide. so there's no clipping in and setting up just let go and start work. but i've never done it and i thought the pulley and ring would be hitting off you as you footlock up. putting you off. its hard enough without being distracted .
  15. didn't give it long enough matty by the sounds of things. they take awhile to get the knack of(i think it was about 3 months, not sure). i find learners on them seem to use the toggle thing alot and bounce around the place. look very unsure. limb walks i always pull the rope out from above the device(you can run along limbs), then push it back in as i come in. also their probably at their worst when there new. and lj's can be annoying when your climbing above your anchor point. there not perfect
  16. thats it i want what ricks getting damo. dave needs more money after what he spent last night
  17. how many of you started with all the bells and whistles? i.e insurance and chippers and all fully qualified men. i've always felt you've had to work your way up to it. i contract away most of the time so its not viable for me to have insurance for when i do get jobs at home, i haven't got a pool of trained people in my area to employ. so instead i employ friends with savy. does that make me a cowboy. what other option do i have. plus i do live in rural ireland so it's done a bit differently here too.
  18. thats why i chose to go to south east asia for a month, mmm. skipped spring and went straight to summer
  19. whats wrong with climbing in the snow, i did it all the time, think its great. probably not the best for long branch walks but thats it
  20. sounds interesting, just felling or climbing aswell. how many do you need. might just be available. i'd say it'll go like a hot cake. plenty of experience, just not really interested if its just ground felling. accomadation provided? just a one off?
  21. how much is a sek worth. wanted to work in sweden for a bit, i know of barry shanahan out there. was meant to go up in september but only made it as far as germany. how short are the subbie contracts and does it matter if your irish. one last question do you take units. theres me and my groundie down here in bonn at the moment.
