  1. Totally agree. Nobody in their right mind will turn down a week of free labour....which gives you 5 days to impress. If you are punctual, hard working and have a good work ethic you stand a good chance of winning some more work. Best of luck!
  2. There are companies that just write app software and then sell them to apple etc.
  3. Nice one for getting the ball rolling Tony! Sounds like a good project, best of luck to you. Have you though about asking someone to write you an iphone/android app for this? I know I would pay for such a resource - easy to update down the line too.
  4. I am selling an X reg VW golf tdi if you are interested? 129k miles 12 months mot Full service history Cd player Air con Metallic red colour 4 good tires It's advertised on pistonheads for £2150 but I will take sensible offers. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2498895.htm
  5. This is a very nice video - fantastic photography and a worthy message, even if it is a little fluffy. Enjoy. Of Forests and Men on Vimeo
  6. According to BBC news the govt have now postponed the 12 week consultation just 2 weeks in to it...looks like they are backing away from the original plans.
  7. VW Passat estate. I am on my second one and they are brilliant. Comfy, big boot, >50mpg on the motorway and very reliable.

  9. Nay bother Steve - all the addicts could use a brief break now and again!
  10. Get it shut down for the day. Your life isn't worth risking for a days wage. Remember that lines can arc, particularly in damp weather when you are waving a metallic object around.
  11. Agreed. Saw it on monday. Mr Firth was excellent.
  12. Fair play for posting pictures of one of your first jobs. I know the customer is always "right" but that tree needs removing. If that crack in the wall behind isn't caused by the tree already there will likely be some damage caused before too long given the location of the stem. Speed comes over time - you are right not to rush it. Thanks for posting.
  13. Nice one! People ignoring surveys is an all too regular occurrence. Definitely worth chasing it up for an extra £4k.

  15. Sorry, the thread title should read NE England...
  16. "I have no motivation" is just about the worst excuse in the book! If Google doesn't ding your dong go get a library book. There are lots on pests and diseases. As above, Forest Research website is a good resource.
  17. I had one of those...great truck it was too. I like the look of the new pickup too....I always buy VW.
  18. Hi all, We have vacancies for 2 tree surveyors for a new contract starting soon around the Durham/Darlington area. The survey is a tree risk assessment of trees in open spaces for a large land and property owner. The initial period will be 8 weeks starting mid-February and may be extended if further surveying services are required by our client. I would be interested to hear from you if you have the following: - a Level 3 Arb qualification or LANTRA Professional Tree Inspector - experience of working alone inspecting trees - experience of GPS/GIS is an advantage - a clean driving license - able to work under your own initiative and meet realistic targets In return we can offer a competitive wage, company vehicle and relevant training. If you are interested, please call me on 07866 773373 or email me your CV with a covering letter: [email protected].
  19. I would urge other members on here not to respond to that question as it does nothing but bring this forum in to disrepute.
  20. Maybe tell your house insurance company about your concerns. If they agree they may commission a report on the tree (although they may not if there is no current damage). At least if the insurance report identifies the tree as a significant risk then you have some more clout in asking her to remove it. Speculating about deliberate criminal damage, especially on an open forum, is idiotic to say the least.
  21. Crikey!! (didn't want to be in the wow gang!) That is incredible. Do you know who footed the bill for that? That's a remarkable amount of money to spend on retaining a tree. Says something about the local opinion of trees.
  22. This looks like a great job for someone... Arboriculture Projects Assistant Full time Short term contract January to September 30 2001 £18,000 pro rata An excellent opportunity has arisen for someone looking to gain skills and experience in the arboriculture tree planting and maintenance areas of our work. Click here for a job description. As projects assistant you will support our Landscape and Arboriculture team in creating new urban woodlands and planting street trees in some of the London’s most deprived areas. As the planting season comes to an end in April, your main role will then be to maintain those projects, with regular watering to encourage successful establishment. Trees for Cities has an excellent track record on urban tree planting and part of your job will be to pass that associated knowledge and skills on to the trainees that we work with. We are looking for an enthusiastic, outdoor loving individual who can work well with people from all backgrounds, fit in easily to a busy team and be flexible to meet the challenges of tree planting in an urban environment. The successful candidate will also hold a valid UK driving licence with towing entitlement and be able to work the occasional weekend or evening with time off in lieu. Closing date: 24 January 2011 Interviews - 28 January For more details please contact [email protected] or call 020 7820 4417.
  23. I made a conscious decision to move away from being on the tools. This decision was based on two things: money and wanting a long-lasting career. I could have actually climbed for quite a few more years and earnt more money as I became a better subbie, but I am too impatient and was ready for a change. I only climbed for about 5 years and loved it. Like others, there are many days when I wish I was up a tree. It seemed that the choice ahead of me was either a) stick with the status quo and keep earning not very much money but do what I enjoyed b) start my own business and hope to make more money - this did not seem like a good option given the number of people I worked for that assured me they weren't earning much given the hours they worked. c) do some more training and get in to the surveying side of the work. Sometimes I laugh at myself and the irony of my career: I got in to tree work because I realised that the office wasn't for me....and now I am back in an office! At least I get out of it a lot though. I have no regrets - I enjoy my work and earn more than I used to. And importantly, I can see myself doing this long term whereas the climbing work always felt like it could disappear if I slipped a disc or had an accident. I'm obviously just a great big wuss!
