  3. Hi John, Are you mostly doing tree condition surveys that need a tree location map, or BS5837 surveys that need accurate crown spreads, RPAs etc? We have recently been using an app on ipads and iphones for mapping trees in condition surveys - WEB GIS, WEB MAPPING, GIS CONSULTANCY SERVICES, ADVICE & GIS TRAINING. You can create whatever forms you want, share maps online with clients and export all the data in to GIS formats, spreadsheets, Google Earth files.... You can collect stuff in there and then make your own maps using free GIS software such as QGIS. I've had a demo from the Pear Tech guys and it looked good - if I hadn't already invested in other stuff I would probably get that. For BS5837 surveys, I tend to just mark-up a paper topo plan on site, and collect all the survey data in a spreadsheet on my ipad.
  4. Are the Meindl Airstreams good/comfy enough to wear hillwalking? I need some new walking boots but could also do with a decent pair of safety boots for surveys so wondered if the Airstreams would double up well.
  5. Ha ha - my ginger barnet has attracted plenty of names over the years but that's the first time I've thought of myself as a ginger mutant! Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  6. Hi Gary. So frustrating, I have been there often! As far as I can work out, you need to re-scale the whole drawing. You can do that by using the scale command and using two points on the 10 metre scale bar as references. I always forget the order you do it in so end up googling it! 7. Sleep more. Eat less sugar and more slow release food. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  8. Hi Stewart. I've moved your post to the employment part of the forum. People can't reply to posts in this section but of course they can see your contact details and get in touch with questions etc. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  9. Thanks Laurence - I have passed your details on.
  10. Evening all. Are there any members here in the Newbury area? My uncle needs a contractor for a large Silver Birch fell in the Speen area. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  11. Simon Holmes is excellent - top class chap with lots of experience and lots of gadgets!!
  12. I use FreeAgent. It's ace - does quotes, invoices, payroll, VAT returns and more for £27 per month. It has smartphone apps too so you can invoice from site and record expenses as you go. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  13. Ha ha!! Not an Acer at all is it?! Viburnum opulus is looking good - thanks peeps.
  14. Well that is bonkers and way beyond using the wrong words! So, if someone fells a tree in a Conservation Area without notifying the council of their intent to do so, have they felled it "without permission"? This is the wording used in the online planning guidance: The work may go ahead before the end of the six week period if the local planning authority gives consent. That's why I think it is semantics - because you still need consent (no TPO to be served) in response to your notification.
  15. By not making a TPO after receiving a s.211 notice, the LPA implicitly gives "permission". It's all semantics ain't it.
  16. Any ideas on this tree? I wondered about Acer hyrcanum but the base of the leaf is flatter than that and its more deeply lobed The tree was multi-stemmed and about 4m tall.
  17. Bosky Trees in Somerset offer air-spading. Air Spade UK, Air Spade Hire UK | Bosky Trees, Arboriculturalists UK
  18. Chris Cooper-Abbs is not too far away: Arb Matters – Forestry & Arboricultural Experts Also AEMG in Redditch have their own LOLER certified guy (Pete Logan) but I am not sure if they offer it as a service to others. You could give them a call: Tree Surgery, Arboricultural Consultancy and Landscape Management | Acorn Environmental Management Group Redditch
  19. Your original email is enough, assuming it was clear enough about the trees location and intended works. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  20. I've got one moob that's more saggy than the other so am never quite sure. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  21. Not sure if that question is to me, but nope, that's not what I'm saying.
  22. Are you saying that some people advocate installing a dynamic brace in trees with no visible faults? I've not come across that. I recommend dynamic braces in trees that exhibit weak unions - the intention being that the brace would prevent damage or injury by arresting a major failure but otherwise allowing the fork some natural flexure which may promote reaction wood enough to strengthen the weak area.
