  1. "when we planted it 35 years ago, it was only 2 feet high" and getting an enquiry on the phone, ask the customer "what type of tree is it?" "oh, well, errrrm, not really sure,.... its got green leaves"
  2. Over the years i`ve had allsorts of comments and questions from customers, some rediculous, some with the best intensions, but many end up leaving me very puzzled wondering where they got that from, or just leave me splitting my sides. A couple of mine are; After spending half an hour on site setting up chipper etc with customer watching, enter the tree and set a nice anchor, ask the groundy for the 200, the customer shouts up; "would you like a cup of tea?" Sometimes when pricing i get; "you do take the stuff away, dont you?" So, please post a few you have encountered and give us a laugh. Oh, and dont forget the "how long will it take?"
  3. Recon i`ll be there, need new boots, saw pants and my box of new chains is getting low. Whats all this about a credit crunch? I seem to be spending lots still:scared1:
  4. I thought i was almost an alky, but even i would feel rough drinkin it out of pint glasses:confused1:
  5. We were even asked to this to a conifer once; Goes to show, sometimes the customer gets what they want!
  6. Got a few pics but cant say ive ever done it:blushing: this was a "reduction" that ought to have been a fell but there was £350 in it;
  7. The topping discussion often comes up, but where do you draw the line? Some of us will top if its the only way to save a tree, that is if you know the customer will get someone else to do it, or fell it. Some refuse point blank to do it. So can we afford not to do as the customer asks, even in a declining market? Any views would be great, but pictures of works you have done would be interesting. Come on be honest, even if its work you are not proud of:scared1:
  8. Yeh dean, just the typical yorkshire whit:008:
  9. You been in the knife box dean? Lol:sneaky2:
  10. Yep, i do stand corrected mpb. Now you mention it, i think the PCD on disco2 is the same as the P38 rangie- much smaller than the defender. Guess ive been lookin at flat-front landys too long!
  11. Ok Dean, you might need to check the ratio on the disco td5 is the same as yours, but otherwise it will go straight on. Taking the hub out to get shafts out is not a big job- i am doing mine at the moment on the v8. If you are running up to Market weighton soon, you could try these, i`ve spent lots with them, and they know landys inside out; http://www.lrseries.com/ They do parts, but also do recon and exchange axles, boxes etc.
  12. Thats horrific monkey, dare say i`d blame the landscapers. I bet they thought they had done a real good job too! It almost looks like an amenity area is it?
  13. I`ll plump for 140:blushing:
  14. Glad you got sorted mate, just found out mine has a seized motor:scared1:
  15. Marc, from what i could see, the leaf that is there appears to be full size, healthy with no holes, just reduced numbers of leaves. That is with the exception of one cherry with discolouration.
  16. Cheers so far guys, as you all mention lack of nutrition and/or soil compaction were the first thoughts. But yes Marc, the orchard is in another part of the property. One of the plums is well away from any of the landscaping. There is also another in a neighbours garden that is suffering, that obviously hasn`t been disturbed. Your comments are all valued. I`m baffled! It would be nice to give the customer some feedback.
  17. Lot of scaping been done but not recently. Some trees near the works, others not.
  18. Yeh, thats what i thought first Dean, but how does it explain healthy shrubs, conifers, maples, rowans, cedar etc, etc growing adjacent? Also the trees are all around a large property, so nothing localised. Even the trees in an orchard are some 50 yards away from anything else.
  19. One of the purp plums; Another; This one had definate signs of die-back; As i say, the apples seem similar but i dont seem to have any pics of them:blushing: Any clues?
  20. Been to price a job today and the customer asked me to have a look at all the trees on the property. Very wide variety of species that mainly look healthy apart from, Plums (green and purple), apples and cherrys. All appear to have a reduced amount of leaf. I`d be grateful of your opinions, hope you can see from the poor pics from my phone! The worst cherry; One of the better cherrys, but with an amount of yellow leaf; Green plum; More to follow....
  21. Just a thought, can your timber supplier not offer a price with transport included? If he has transport, it is very likely to be cheaper than using hired in haulage.
  22. Nice old bus! A land rover only becomes a "landy" when it has a story with it. Great!
  23. Recently i have been running the same as Huck, my groundy can do all i ask of him very well, he is happy too! I do have a guy i can call on when i need a sawing groundy, but you can usually get by well without. I believe its well worth looking at the issue of staff doing what they can well, rather than doing allsorts not so well. I also believe that should i decide to give my groundy a saw, he will be taught from scratch, basic maintenance as Nige says, sharpening etc before he gets the saw in his hand. If he doesnt want to do it, thats also fine, we will carry on as we are! Every person in the workplace should be able to carry out his work competantly and safely. Therefore a saw operator sharpening his own saw, on site, is a must, otherwise he is not a saw operator is he?
  24. Sod the tiles, think i`d be more worried about scuffing a rope:scared1:
  25. Yep, sure looks like a Superwinch husky. I just got hold of a second hand one also- said to have a small electrical problem I am just about to take it out of the bumper so i can paint the bumper, so if you like i can take some pics of the wiring as it should be, if that helps?
