  1. an yeah I know its not oak, but I still love a bit of twisty british timber!
  2. love it! there's nothing like character filled wood, none of this crappy boring continental oak stuff...
  3. awesome tommy! long straight thin poles are difficult to do interesting stuff in, but I think you cracked it!
  4. a bit of drapery, yes Tommy I know you saw on fbook and the yellow forum very wet beech, currently dampening the lounge carpet...
  5. they last longer on electric saws due to the slower speed. not sure on the fitting though. Jamie Doeren will know. if its the narrow fitting then the universal mount you get on cannon bars will fit. you'll need a 1/4 pitch sprocket.
  6. Ha! I had started thinking about a dino skeleton as well! We could do a joint project sometime, that would be fun!
  7. Here's what I did with Jamie Doeren in Ridgway last week. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_TWru-wGzE]YouTube - Lifesized Bobblehead by Carver Simon O'Rourke[/ame]
  8. :-( I miss climbing. except on rainy days.
  9. his hands don't look like he's made a mistake yet... :-) I've tried the two saw thing, the next thing is three saws, but I haven't made the mouth attachment yet...
  10. cheers Jonesie, no probs, I've ordered the reel of modified stuff. What's the new oregon one like? do you have pictures? I heard they were producing a carving chain but haven't heard details.
  11. Are you sure thats the modified stuff? with the heels already shortened? Thats well cheap!! I asked the stihl rep, and he said they won't sell it by the reel in this country, only by the loop. My mate in Germany quoted around £550 for a reel. is the model number on it ending in 3661?
  12. really nice that Roger!! getting objects nice and round is difficult. I have a german friend called Roland Lindner who is really good at that! nice piece of oak too.
  13. ok, having read more of the posts... I have a little of the full house chain left, I bough a load from Jamie Doeren in the US. I also think Bob King has some to sell. I'll be seeing them both in Feb so will ask for more if poss. I will also see exactly how much I have left and let you all know. I tend to grind the heels off the cutters and also take the depth gauges down. this makes it quite aggressive but it will still cut smoothly. it wears out quickly and the links stiffen up if the heels aren't taken off. In relation to forming a loop with it, I very slowly and gently break the rivet with the bench mounted unit and leave the cutter un scathed. it can be reused then. another interesting thing to try on the bigger saws is skip tooth. I have a husky 395xp with a 24 inch bar. I've ground off every other two cutters and its really smooth and cuts fast. I think its something to do with wood removal rate. comments/experiences would be good.
  14. I use the standard 1/4 pitch links to shorten ready made loops, but its a really expensive way of buying chain. I'm doing my best to find a way of buying it by the reel again. 100 feet a time makes it way cheaper!! I'll let you all know asap if I find some. it's nice not to have to grind off the heels of the cutters. Cannon 8 inch bars last forever. I'm using one that I've had for 5 yrs on a stihl 192c !
  15. I like the event, but I never go expecting good money. its a jolly more than anything, good scenery, chainsaws and good friends! (it's our wedding anniversary on the 4th, and it was our 10th last year, so try as I might, my lovely wife wasn't keen on being at a carving event for it!!) might be there this year, I'll see how things pan out!
  16. I like to think I specialise in designer firewood... I paid £150 delivered for a similar load awhile back... that was local. just make sure you're making a bit of profit on the time you've put into loading the things... of course if you're near wrexham I'll gladly take it off your hands... just to get it out of your way of course!! :-P :-D
  17. nice! I like it when the wood speaks for itself. no need for fancy bits!
  18. hi pete, yup, we'll be over sometime soon, got to work out when we've got a free evening! speak soon
  19. cheers gibbon, it may be useful, i'll know better after friday.
  20. I never tried rigging with my crotch... sounds painful when I climbed I tried every new knot under the sun and tried to make sure I still knew how to climb if I only had a single climbing rope and one krab. Although it was great trying out new stuff it all kind of went down the priority list when at the top of a massive tree in the rain trying to rig a large piece of oak over a bungalow roof with the rain running down the inside of your boots...
  21. nice. Paolo Bavaresco conducted a few tests on climbing hitches a few years ago. he was telling me some of the knots started smoking and welded themselves to the climbing rope before breaking! http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/FCRR-JD-0402.pdf/$FILE/FCRR-JD-0402.pdf
  22. Hi guys, I have a mahoosive project to quote for in Taunton. I need a nice specimen oak around 700-900 dbh and 7-9m tall. (that I can buy to carve so prefferably no tpo!) If I can't find the right oak tree, I will need to construct one from various other bits so anyone with a felling job approaching with oak involved I'd appreciate contact. I really want to use local timber to Taunton because it will suit the project better. any leads? (and yes I know its a tall order!!)
