  1. I'm a no peg use spikes on 90% of dismantle's climber, pegless timber is far easier to deal with, and spikes open up far more positioning opertunities allowing you to work safer, adjustable cambium savers allow for rescue or just use a sling or the lowering kit, whatever tools you have to hand. Good spikes used well are comfy and should not cause to many problems, if i want to rest i'll just cinch my rope round the stem and relax in my harness for a bit. Qtip up a Pine
  2. How do you think your tennis elbow came about?
  3. Why not? I work off SRT regularly and know many who do. Working D'dRT off SRT is different I haven't found a good system as yet for doing this myself. I would perform an aerial rescue on DRT on an SRT line if it was left in the tree for access only if i felt it was quicker after weighing up alternatives, hope i never have to though.
  4. I prefer dead eye slings over whoopies they are far easier and more versatile.
  5. Jeez how can you remember that? I can barely remember what was posted last week. They are nice but at the end of the day they are just ascenders, what i like most about them is there comfortable grip and the way the teeth go straight out instead of point down like Petzl ascenders so they do less damage to the rope in certain situations, i also like the ease of attaching them and removing them from the rope one handed (once your used to it as mentioned here!). What i don't like is the over engineered design and more moving parts yeah its cool only simple is sometimes better. The worst thing! is how the cam can fail to grab sometimes it will not send you into free fall rather drop down a few feet a severe problem, for me it only happens very rarely for others often it is to do with the cantilever design and the way you hold it. Thankfully the teeth are rounded and point straight out a Petzl ascender would damage the sheath of the rope if this happened.
  6. Well yeah kinda what i think too, after years of recklessly breaking the law and carrying out rigging operation it was time to become a responsable arborist and fork out for my CS41.
  7. Mere technicality that, he has his harness on and the tree is still standing, for all we know out of shot he could be stood on a log technical making it an aerial cut.
  8. Well i was also asked to do my medium felling ticket for said company again to appease local council apparently, along with up to date 1st aid i've just done my CS41 and chipper ticket this year so i'm not ready to shell out for more nptc units until the next tax year I aim to do 2 training events a year. Basically most the important tickets are be requested from me i have all apart from the med fell, the company is setting up the venue and training provider all i have to do is show up and pay needless to say i as yet haven't bothered, I will get round to my medium fell in 2010.
  9. Pointless really to comment i can't see a pic which clearly shows an after shot or good before shot to know exactly what happened, some on here even thought the tree had been felled completly. So easy to assume the facts even i did at first. I think Hama'd makes a valid point as for me personally i don't want to be just a cutting climber, i want to have a say in what i do this is just the direction i want to take in my own career. Personally i think all arborists should go this route we should be the future champions of trees with a more sympathetic approach to tree care. But then i have been called the round peg trying to fit into the sqaure hole by my one and only employer, i've come to just accept we are all individuals and have are own paths to follow for our own reasons. As for overall reductions i've worked on many mature Cedars i've yet to come across one that needs an overall reduction, i've not seen many suffer root palte failure just major branches / scaffolds, hence most Cedar reduction work i've done has been partial/selective reductions of heavy laterals or branches showing sigins of weakness or previous partial failure etc. Just my 2 cents on mature Cedar reductions.
  10. So true that.
  11. What do you want the site for?
  12. I hear what your saying about the elastic round your neck i haven't found an alternative solution yet?
  13. So you use that set up on a treemotion John by attaching the 2 biners on short slings to the central side D,s (not the hip D,s something unique to this type of harness). Instead of a sling tetherr to the handled ascender i've been using strong elastic i find it more comfortable, i've also been thinking of replacing the handled ascender for a petzl basic as i find the handle can foul the croll which is annoying.
  14. Olive oil or butter helps to break down resin something to do with the fatty acids i believe but don't qoute me on that. I wouldn,t use normal washing powder, i'm sure its not a problem to use it its just not reccomended. You can either buy dedicated rope wash for dynamic rope (they do static rope wash to i think) personally i use soap flakes these are great for technical waterproofs too like gor-tex its cheap and availible from Tescos so worth getting. Depending on how soiled the rope is i'd either just wash it without any soap flakes or for very soiled rope with soap on delicates setting, if badly covered in resin use either butter or olive oil and leave over night before washing.
  15. Your already pretty modern:biggrin: by the sounds of things by using the effcient albiet not my cup of tea Lockjack and ropeguide combo, your throwlining and have ascenders so SRT is just a natural progression and really its not that hard yet addictive once your into it.
  16. You need to get into SRT if your setting lines with a throwline, you already have most of the kit by the sounds of it and with your build you may find SRT easier and more effcient.
  17. Was that you climbing, the climbing looked good even if the spec maybe was not, and i agree that looks a nice truck
  18. I agree with Hama, we go by TO specs as guidance not an absolute if we get up there and feel the spec has changed upon closer inspection then we do so and inform the TO of our decision, its a stratergy that has worked well for our relationship with local TO,s.
  19. They do that its nothing to worry about.
  20. I may have to try that method of attaching the retrival line as i'm curious if the the pulley for some reason gets jammed on the spliced eye/ring wether a harder tug will tend the prussik giving more slack and helping retrieval??
  21. Got to love those deep gob cuts just shows how easy the verticals go over no pull rope no struggle still with control.
  22. probably the wrong place to put this but i can not be bothered to start a new thread, I did my CS30 -31 in 2001 then got the rest of my tickets when i started treework after 2007. Recently a company i occasionally work for has told me i have to re sit my 30-31 because they are way out of date and without 30-31 most of my other tickets are invalid as 30-31 is a pre-requisite?? I was told i have to do it or i am unable to do the council contracts as they insist on up to date tickets.
  23. Yes but I don.t know if it will take a splice and retrieval ball.
  24. Such a shame:sad:
  25. 25kn is excessive enough so a 10kn difference is not a factor to be concerned about your karabiners or another part in your system will just fail first is all! Its more about suitability an ali swing cheek is not ideal in this situation sure it can work its cheap and easily replacable, but a fixed plate pulley like a steal ART or the billet (i assume its made from a solid block of ali?) coccon would be more suited to the task. A steel fixed plate ISC mini pulley would probably be best cheap alternative thinking about it?
