  1. One small point on this issue, but I'm sure that somewhere back in the mists of time, all council work was done by council workers, all rail work was done by rail workers, highways work was done by highways workers, well you catch my drift. That system did not work efficiently, costs were high, workers were notorious for their lack of work, unions had too much power and we paid through the nose for the "service" that was barely provided. NOw we have a competitive Market, where people have to work for a wage, actually produce something, and here we are still moaning about the system. The old ways did not work, the new way works, but not how we like it. I can remember the days when the unions fought to keep their comrades in jobs, and fought the privatisation, it wasn't that long ago....was it?
  2. Thanks Tom, a reasoned argument well thought out and well put across.....at last! There is hope after all
  3. I find it quite offensive that some see fit to slate one another on a public forum that I help to run, just because of who their employer happens to be. At the end of the day, we are all in the same boat. I do not care if you are council employed, self-employed, privately employed, youre lucky not to be unemployed in this day and age. Its about time some got off their high horses and looked at how they lead their own lives, before sniping at others.
  4. I agree with Mr Humphries, and we don't wish to be accused of unnecessary censorship now do we?
  5. I may be wrong, but in the drive for ever increasing efficiency, council teams have to be seen to be earning their keep! Gone are the days of the council worker leaning on a broom all day! Is it fair? maybe not, but we have to deal with it.
  6. Ah point taken, probably meant to have a licence, doubt many would bother even so. Well not until the council catches up with them anyway.
  7. I don't know anyone around here who would even apply for a licence to trade roadside, or even if our local council requires one? I've sold logs and plants and veg roadside for 24years without issue.
  8. I'm so glad that my UC was so severe that they just cut it all out. All that messing about with different treatments would have done my head in. Can't beat a bit of filleting to ease your pain .
  9. Here in Suffolk I've seen prices range from £35-£85 depending on who's selling, a massive difference in prices and also in the quality of the product in the bags. Quantity at one sale meant that the contents on a tonne bag easily fitted in the back of a Renault Clio, without affecting the suspension, so that gives you an idea as to how little wood was actually in the bag!
  10. As a groundie, the only times I had something go wrong was when the climber was trying to rush the job and failed to communicate clearly. I've also had "experienced" climbers shout down how many wraps they want..... Yeah if I listened I'd either join them up the tree or have had holes in roofs. Climbers aren't the be all and end all of the team, they are just part of it.... They are however prima Donnas and tarts
  11. My aims and ambitions have changed lately, due to an unforeseen health problem. I now want to just get back into the job, enjoy it for what it is, work with people I like to work with, and do it as long as I can.
  12. Being a s/emp groundie is the best excuse ever to collect and hoard as many saws as possible, the wife/girlfriend (or both?) can never say you don't need them. Climbers collect jingly jangley stuff to hang off their harnesses, and pretty coloured lengths of rope, we collect saws, all the saws, all the sizes, with all the bars and chains to go with whatever we need for a job, whatever the size. It's an addiction, if it isn't yet it will be.
  13. Looking good Ben, lovely area of the county too.
  14. Welcome to the biggest clique in tree work, enjoy Nathan
  15. For the cable get an old car tyre, then feed the cable into that, will stop it unravelling all over the place! Cheap as chips and recycling at the same time. I think you have the gist of how to operate the tirfor, it does take a certain knack to lock the lever forward, once the cable is fed through you can just pull the lever back to grip on the cable.
  16. Stick some pics up when you get your boots and trousers, let's see them and Their new owner. Best wishes for the future.
  17. Wow, I do hope someone appreciates all of this!
  18. Nice one every one, thank you Honeys, top guys I never cease to be amazed by people's generosity.
  19. Thanks for putting your side of the story across, obviously none of us would like our products or work criticised on a public forum. I hope both parties in this case can resolve this amicably via email or phone, we don't wish to see this descend into a public slanging match, no good for either party concerned.
  20. Dominic, this is an old thread back from 2010. Check out a couple of other thread re: this topic, tippers mounted on pick-ups seem to be getting interest now
  21. Harking back to the comment about how Arbtalk is "cliquey", I've just re-read Predators thread, where he is looking for some boots. Now this fellow is relatively new to the forum, unknown to the majority of us here, yet his appeal for boots has been answered several times over, people here have offered a virtual shoulder to lean on. Why is this? He is not part of the clique, but part of our society, and most are human enough to help a chap when he is down. This chap could be you or me at some point in our lives, for whatever reason. Of course we aren't all going to get along all of the time, Im not that naive, but it doesn't take much to try. If this is being "cliquey" then it's not a bad thing, it time some looked beyond the end of their own nose and viewed the bigger picture.
  22. Consider yourself chopped
  23. I don't think it's ever taken me a month to respond to a reported post, if it's reported during the day and I'm out I'll take a look when I get in, if it's urgent I'll call another mod and get them to sort it. Sometimes a reported post may not be regarded as necessary to take any action. This is not because we are ignoring you the reporter, but maybe we see the comment reported in a different light, maybe understanding the humour of the poster. As for the forum being cliquey, I think it's more of a case of those who have grown to know each other over time can share the banter, similar to a team at work sharing a common joke. Join in the banter, or form your own little clique with like minded souls, and enjoy the forum
  24. Luftwaffe, I hear where you are coming from re quad use. But they'd have their place, like having a smaller saw to compliment a large one. I have used quads where tractors simply can't get to, where harvesters just simply are not viable and their time is better spent elsewhere on site. It's literally horses for courses, each machine does a job, but doesn't do every job
