Another reason why I will ALWAYS buy an iPhone.
Andy Collins replied to Old Mill Tree Care's topic in General chat
I wish, the worlds gone mad lately, pubs are generally rubbish these days. Someone made a reference earlier somewhere, so I had a rant. -
More fake Irishmen than you can shake a stick at, shouting begorrah and feck and stuff! Fair enough if your Irish, but the English never want to push the boat out on St Georges Day!

Pubs!!!don't get me started on them! Smoking, posh nosh, over rated, over priced beer theme bars. Sick of them all. Tonight they'll be full of fake wannabe Irishmen, giving more credence to The Irish than the English on St Georges Day. Worlds gone stark raving mad. -

I've seen old boys in the woods oiling the bar just like that, with waste hydraulic oil poured on it, nothing new there. -

What a lot of fuss over nothing, storm in a teacup. So this character is ripping people off, or is he? He is charging a rate which he has quoted for. He hasn't forced them to have the work done, they could have got quotes elsewhere, I mean tree specialists are ten a penny these days. People on here moan about being under cut, he isn't under cutting anyone. So his work is deplorable, but I have seen "pro" companies do little better for the same money, but that's ok cos theyre "pros". Instead of pointing the finger, surely it's better to go out and prove that your work is better, by being seen to be better, but that doesn't make good TV does it. Even the chinless wonder expert wouldn't show himself, or stand up and be counted when they challenged "Walter", what message does that send? Ask yourself when on site, "how do I look to the client" and how can you look better in the clients eyes than that man. let's not forget, programmes such as Watchdog are there to sensationalise and grab our attention, just for a second, put yourself in that set-up, and ask yourself, do I stand up to such scrutiny? -

Andy Collins replied to BenC's topic in Training & education
Instead of bending in front of these bureaucrats and taking it up the bum, why not just say we are not going to keep shelling out for this endless rubbish. If no one has the tickets, they will have to employ those without. This red tape is just creating jobs for the training depts and colleges, just to justiify their existence. High time the working man stood tall again, Battle of Britain was won by teenagers flying Spits and Hurricanes with less training than we are required to have. to bureaucracy -

Child labour made this country rich over the centuries, then we criticise other countries for wishing to have our wealth. As a nation we are the biggest hypocrites, trying to tell others what is morally right or wrong, we should get our own house in order first. We all want cheap clothing, mass produced in sweat shops, but close our eyes to the conditions they work in. If we took the child labour away, bearing in mind that in many families it may only be the children earning the families income, how else would they eat? Do you really think that they would thank us for "freeing" them, only for them to starve? Of course child labour is not right, either morally or ethically, but t is essential for their survival. -
At this time of day this is all sounding a little bit too energetic Why do this today when it can wait til tomorrow or the day after?

Ok Ive wasted enough time o this topic, here is the post I took umbrage at: Re: Ms200t what's it worth You'll get alot more on ebay than here, i know that much! I agree with starting at 99p, it will go for just as much as if you put a reserve. The reason I took offence was the inference that you will get more money on eBay than on Arbtrader. Hardly a good advert for the forum you all wish to spend your time on and I waste my time moderating. In retrospect I should have deleted the post and that would be the end of it. But I tried to be a little more lenient, my bad.
-
Nice one Predator, glad you're getting some sunny days belts and braces will hold em up for you, after jeans etc they appear heavy, but they aren't sooo bad, honest! Look forward to seeing the pictures of the lunging too.

Which post did I say I would delete? I have deleted the posts I would delete, and have not deleted the posts I would not delete. I have expressed my concern at posts that have raised a concern in my mind, and made this point quite eloquently. You will be aware when you make an "innocent" error, as your "innocent" post may disappear, you understand. Now, fun though this discussion is, I actually must get some tools together for tomorrow.

Rover the OP is selling a MS200t, this is a specialist piece of kit for a specialised job, namely tree surgery. It is not the sort of saw for a typical ebayer, ie cheap firewooding saw. If it were to be sold on Arbtrader, it is more likely to be sold to a professional who at least knows and understands how to handle it (one would hope)
-
Pleasant, there is a hard and fast set of rules, and they are used to guide when moderating, the same as they are there to guide you when posting. My judgement is whether or not to delete a post, whether or not it fits into those rules, or whether or not I happen to like the tone of the post.
-
No we can discuss/debate/argue about topics such as eBay. I even use eBay myself. As a moderator, I can delete any post I deem necessary, but sometimes it serves a better purpose to leave it and make use of it. Now I think the thread has been derailed sufficiently, and we should let the thread continue.
-
We can argue this until the cows come home, but it won't change how I see it, and it won't change how you see it, I'm just here to moderate and help with the smooth running of the site, and I said, help look after a good friends interests. I thought by pointing this issue out rather than just deleting it, it would serve a better purpose.
-
Of course not, we do not wish to go down that route. It's one thing recommending a brand of saw, or clothing, and quite another to suggest that advertising on Arbtalk won't raise you as much money, ie openly criticising a service thats been very good to many of it's membership. More a case of having principles I suppose.
-
I am just pointing out that I feel his statement a little annoying. I personally have no financial interest in this forum, however one of the people I consider amongst my best friends does own it, and as a friend I am looking out for his interests.
-
Any particular reason for this statement Alex? Personally I find it a little offensive to read such a post, when this forum is here for all to use FOC, and the only way to raise funds for it's running is through the Arbtrader section and advertising in general. As a senior member here I'd have thought you would have shown us all a little more respect, but there you go. Now I'm all grumpy and you've messed my day up

Refused fuel because combi can is not GREEN!!

Health and Safety Executive / Local Authorities Enforcement Liaison Committee (HELA) HELA LACORS PETEL Subject: Petroleum Open Government Status:Open LAC Number: 65/9 Keywords: Petrol Containers, Portable Storage Revised: December 1997 Review date: May 2003 To: All Unitary and Island Councils; County Councils in England; and Fire Authorities For the attention of: Environmental Services /Trading Standards /Fire Authorities /Other This circular gives advice to Petroleum Enforcement Officers PORTABLE PETROL CONTAINERS 1 This circular aims to explain the law on the type and capacity of portable petrol containers that can be used to store petrol, filled at petrol stations and carried on vehicles. 2 There are three pieces of relevant legislation: - the Petroleum (Consolidation) Act 1928 (PCA); - the Petroleum-Spirit (Motor Vehicles etc.) Regulations 1929; and - the Petroleum-Spirit (Plastic Containers) Regulations 1982 (which is supported by an ACoP on testing and marking containers). 3 These control how petrol can be kept (and for plastic containers, their design and manufacture for use in work situations). They do not specify the capacity or construction of containers that can legally be filled at petrol filling stations or that can be carried on a vehicle travelling on the road. The Petroleum (Consolidation) Act 1928 4 PCA requires a licence to keep petrol except for small quantities kept in "securely stopped glass, earthenware or metal containers of a maximum capacity of 570 mls". The total quantity kept in this way must not exceed 15 litres. METAL CONTAINERS 5 The Petroleum-Spirit (Motor Vehicles etc.) Regulations 1929 exempt certain quantities of petrol kept in metal containers from licensing requirements. The petrol must only be kept for the purposes of refuelling internal combustion engines and must not be for sale. 6 Up to 275 litres of petrol can be kept in any one storage place without a licence. The allowable quantity is reduced when the petrol is kept in or near buildings, or near public thoroughfares or other flammable substances (see below). In calculating the 275 litre limit, the petrol in the fuel tanks of vehicles in the storage area is included in the total. 7 Metal containers must be constructed so as to be reasonably secure against breakage and to prevent leakage of liquid or vapour. They should be marked with the words "petroleum-spirit" and "highly flammable". 8 The maximum container capacity for keeping petrol is 10 litres unless the following conditions are met: a) the storage place is more than 6m from a building, highway or public footpath, and; b) there is spillage retention at the storage place (eg retaining wall, trench), and; c) the licensing authority is given written notice of the storage place before it is used. This does not include petrol in the fuel tank of a vehicle. 9 Note that there is no restriction on the number of containers that can be kept as long as the 275 litre maximum limit is not passed. 10 If the storage place is less than 6m from any building, stack of timber or other inflammable substance it can only be kept in the fuel tank of a vehicle and up to two 10 litre containers on a motor vehicle, motor boat, aircraft or hovercraft unless notice in writing is given to the licensing authority. 11 Where petrol is kept in a building (or a place attached to a building) used as a dwelling or place where people assemble, there must be a substantial floor or partition separating the petrol storage from the rest of building. The floor or partition must not be readily inflammable. Where the partition (not a floor) has an opening it must be fitted with a self closing door made of fire resisting material. In these circumstances a maximum of two 10 litres containers can be kept. Petrol in the fuel tank of a vehicle is not included in this amount. PLASTIC CONTAINERS 12 The Petroleum-Spirit (Plastic Containers) Regulations 1982 allow plastic containers to be used as well as metal. They exempt from the need for a licence certain amounts of petrol kept in plastic containers for the purposes of refuelling internal combustion engines and not for sale. 13 For storage in plastic container without a licence the containers must: a) be constructed of suitable materials; b) have maximum capacity of five litres; c) be designed and constructed properly; d) have appropriate markings or labels; and the quantities that can be stored are: i) two containers can be kept on any motor vehicle, motor boat, aircraft or hovercraft; ii) plus two further containers can be in a safe place in any domestic premises; iii) plus two more containers can be kept in any other safe place at least 6m from the first. These quantities are in addition to any petrol kept in metal containers. 14 Where a petrol licence is in force, the conditions in paragraph 13 do not apply, but storage has to be in accordance with any licence conditions. 15 It is an offence to manufacture, import or supply containers for use at work which do not meet the requirement of sub-paragraphs 13 a) to d). Details on the testing and marking of plastic containers are available in HSE's Approved Code of Practice COP 6. It is not necessarily an offence to keep containers not meeting 13 a) - d) as long as a licence is in force. CARRIAGE OF PETROL 16 PCA and it's associated regulations do not exercise any control over the carriage of petrol on vehicles for private or work use. 17 The commercial carriage of petrol is covered by two sets of HSE enforced regulations: - the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Regulations 1996 (CDG); and - the Carriage of Dangerous Goods (Classification, Packaging and Labelling) and Use of Transportable Pressure Receptacles Regulations 1996 (CDGCPL). 18 These regulations include requirements for design and marking of the packaging or containers used. The packaging must be suitable for the purpose, having regard to the substances they contain and be appropriately marked. PLAs should direct queries to the local HSE office. 19 These regulations are solely concerned with the commercial transport of hazardous substances and do not cover petrol carried on a vehicle for private use. SUMMARY 20 At filling stations, there is no specific legal restriction on the type or number of containers that can be filled (although Petroleum Licensing Authorities often use licensing conditions to limit the containers sizes). The legal limits are on how and where they are subsequently kept. 21 Carriage of petrol is not covered by petroleum legislation. However, petroleum licensing officers should advise filling station operators to ensure that only containers suitable for the purpose are filled. -
Refused fuel because combi can is not GREEN!!
Andy Collins replied to Sciadopitys's topic in General chat
I've had issues with filling cans, I always take two jerry cans down to fill, always have done. Then one day the garage called me in and said that by law I could only fill one 20litre jerry, or 2x5litre cans suitably marked to carry fuel. I did look up the law on this when I got home, and they are correct to do this, blooming irritating though! But then if you read the H&S bumf following this even this is incorrect.
