  8. The facts as I understand them at present are ; Splicing is the modification of a CE marked piece of kit therefore no longer compliant Importation of non CE marked kit makes you a supplier - contrary to the requirement of the use of CE marked PPE I'm not in total agreement with the above, but that is what defines what is "fit for purpose". As is true for any legislation that is so broard reaching, it is predominatly positive in it's outcome, however in some limited but important areas it is obviously limiting
  9. Good discussion. Sad and sorry state of affairs imo. Here is a pic of a factory splice next to a non-factory one. I bet you can tell which is which

  14. That define you as competent? I'm not looking for a subjective answer suck as Kev's, I can come up with plenty myself. I need a definitive answer i.e. Who can and who can't........
  15. Taken from AFAG 401 ; Tree climbing operations Splices should be made by someone competent to splice, eg the manufacturer. Competence should be demonstrable for each rope type. How would you define competence in this situation?
  16. Afag 401; section 15 - then read the label in the helmet http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/afag401.pdf
  17. I strongly disagree with you on the safety issue, although the wire does act as a keeper it also has a more important function. The wire acts as a spring holding the cam against the line. So when you lean back onto the system is grabs reliably. Without it you could find yourself fallind backwards until you hit your stopper knot. Not pleasant or safe IMO
  18. Smash and crash only. If the big wood is staying and someone does not give a feck it's fast work as you know
  19. you would be suprised. Timber crane, haf a dozen staff, big chipper and someone cracking a big whip.........
  20. takeyou so long to get 6ft off the ground that you would be better off working for 50p per week and paying the golf membership:001_tt2:
  21. scaffolding - adjustable "h" shape either end, joined by 2 straight rails
  22. There are many styles and manufacturers of porta-wrap style devices. If you are more specific i'm sure someone could be of help
