Axe or maul

Quick straw poll. Domestic use only for my own woodburner...I want an axe for splitting seasoned hardwood logs. Any suggestions for £50 max budget.

Best axes are old ones like elwell,you can often find em at car boots or antique shops,dont get on much with a maul

never used a maul so i can't compare them but my axe still works. the heavier the better in my opinion.

Husqvarna s1600 amazing axe can use one handed and go through some stuff ypu wouldnt believe nice light handle the head is just right weight i find would highly recommend

Depends on what would you are splitting. But I would prefer a maul over an axe as it is less likely to get stuck in knotty/gnarly wood. You can waste a lot of time trying to release your axe head when it becomes embedded in a log. Mauls come in different weights, so make sure you get one that you can manage for a full mornings splitting!

If your supply of wood is nice clean rings, then any old axe will do. The snottier they get, the better the axe/maul you'll need.

 

You can get half and half as well. Gransfors Bruk do a lovely range. They come razor sharp, literally. You can even shave with the maul. The beauty of having a really nice axe, that'll hold it's edge really well, is that it cuts as much as it splits. So you're not always relying on brute force.

 

Between us all here, I guess we have most of the range, including a couple of double headed throwing axes.
