Call me old fashioned, but a t light is wider than 16mm, and an auger bit is in my view a wrong tool for the job.

I'd use a forstner bit as mentioned or if being tight as I am use what I have which is a spade bit of 30mm

I'd also use a forstner bit steve. There are two decent sets in screwfix for sale. One at £40:00 just for forstner bits or one at £35:00 where you get forstner bits and auger bits. I've got the mixed set, but another member on here got the pure forstner bit set.

 

Are you planning on making something same as the picture or something different.

I get cheap glass inserts from Fleabay to reduce the risk of fire and use a suitable Forster bit to set them in the timber, accurate and a nice flat.bottomed hole.
