whats the best way to clean drill bits?

one of them has dominion on the shaft but other than that they appear blank.

I've used white vinegar on long drills and old chisels just don't leave them in for too long as it will dissolve the steel.

It happened to me with a few old files but they were emersed for a few months

Well if you look on the second row tools on the page I linked to, low and behold a brace with a 3 jaw chuck

fair enough then, you'd need some arms to put a 24" drill through a bit of wood though.

 

i think they are meant to go with a tbar handle of some sort as there is a flat ground into the side of the shaft.

Need a bigger hole, get a bigger brace

It's possible they were meant to be used with a Beam Drill which has a chuck but also a set screw to keep the bit from rotating. See Here Just Google Beam Drill, loads of stuff on Youtube.

 

As for the brace with the 3 jaw chuck, I have something similar but it actually has a 2 jaw chuck

Think i've got some of these. Left over from when my dad worked for British telecom. Definitely used in brace and bit and he says for drilling through telegraph poles (normally up top). Glad they invented cordless drills.
