TBH it doesn't appear to be that different from the (ironically named) SSE THTC tariff - 'Total Heating Total Control' - on which SSE control when they switch the supply to our storage heaters remotely from their control room more than 100 miles away.  It has been around for decades.....

You think so !!, I’m pretty sure you can opt out of that Tariff.  I’m happy to stick to diesel for the pick up and a log burner, until the quest for net zero is tempered with a bit of common sense or pragmatism.

To me this is only the start of the onslaught of severe tech overreach in our homes where private companies have the ability [ with government say so ] to monitor, control and ultimately cut off our energy supply from afar.

I assume that I'm not the only one being badgered to take a ' smart ' meter with all the convenience and childish attributes that it comes with..

whereas in reality the whole push for these things is about control.

 

The actual end game of this atm as far as I can tell, is to read the meter every 1/2 hour with constantly changing tariffs where we will be 'educated' via pricing to use energy when 'they' want us to.... ie the cheapest time to cook yer dinner or do the washing may be 3 in the morning !

 

As an individual growing up I always looked forward the the onset and application of the latest science and technology in the belief that it would improve life for everyone, but  [ as it now turns out ] it seems that all that's actually happening is that any real innovation gets stifled and big tech is more and more able to have our short and curly's in a strangle hold.... whilst at the spewing out the message that it's for our own advantage or safety👎

Similarly @Macpherson I avoid a lot of the new tech because it is controlling and invasive. I do have an exception in that my battery is managed from china but that was a mistake on my part not researching things well.

 

I think the techies that develop the smart grid are probably in there for the right reasons (getting the most out of a renewables dominated power supply) but it becomes a bonanza for the politicians if they get to control it.

Yep, perhaps this is the case to begin with but there really is no allowance for individual intellect or morals in todays corporate hostile to human life control of everything.. like they say it's ' for your own safety ' when they try to force something on you and are expected to think..     ' that's wonderful, thanks so much '

 

I micro manage my own affairs very well as I always have done, so I'm therefore very aware when others try to feck me over.

Didn't they do the home heating/cooling override thing last year in America with those Hive connected temperature controllers.

 

Whilst I'm not a complete tin foil brigadier, I barely understand the reasons to install a web connected thermostats.

 

But you can turn it on before you get home from your phone, erm yeah it's called a timer, same with smart meters.

But there’s also this plastic thing on the outside that they put another ‘reader’ against for some reason.

I have had a smart meter for about 3 years now and not noticed any real difference . Still pay by direct debit and not been contacted at all since it was installed . Saves me reading the meter and that's about it .
